If you ever have a leak, you can use an extra sail and drape it over leaking area . The pressure of the water on the sail will adhere it to the hull and stop a lot of water intrusion. That coupled with some leak stopping on inside should get you through. Great video

Are you planning to reinforce that area of the hull with a lot more Fiberglass? Would it make sense to do the opposite side of the hull in the same place? i think it's because they are trying to blue water sail a coastal sail boat and it just can't take it, they need a different boat to be doing these long trips, this is the second hull crack :O it's time to get a different boat, if every time you make a long trip the hull breaks! ..i'm fearful for these two :( , that perticualr boat isnt like rubbish or anything, but it's price point and built around and aimed at coastal cruisers, i am not sure it was ever meant to be sailing across the ocean, OR there is weight issues inside the boat putting pressure on the hull in rougher seas, either way , this is two cracks? i wouldnt take that boat out on long trips anymore, it's not reliable, i dunno anything about boats though, i just know they need to be water tight to be boats and not shipwrecks

@@seanc8054We are also bluewater sailing what is essentially a coastal boat (a 1975 CAL34). The first thing we did in preparation was to strengthen all the stringers and the stringer/hull joints. Second thing we did was to add four large scuppers (although the cockpit still drains slower than I wish). After that, we just try to be very judicious with weather conditions/seasons etc. It is still not a Hans Christian but I trust it far more than i would any modern Beneteau /Hunter/Catalina etc.

Not good . I knew a boat that which was 34 foot cat that suffered a crack that let in water . The front of the boat were sharp nosed bows that meant side panels were fairly flat and flexed a lot . round shapes resist flexing better .Over time fiber glass has only so many million flexs in it before it splits . However he could not find the leak for many hours as it only opened when a wave hit the side panel . Eventually he saw the split above the waterline taped it up stopped the leak until he reached the Spanish Canary islands his target from the UK . We fiber glassed repaired the split and stuffed the 2 bow nose cones of the boat with suitable buoyancy material to stiffen the nose section.

All cruisers should carry FlexTape aboard in their emergency boat kit. I carry several different sizes just in case of an accident like this one. This tape works even under water. You can dive in and slap a piece of tape over the problem or just cover it where it 's leaking inside, or both if you wish! It will last (they say) till you get ashore. I hope to never have to use it to see, but at least I have several different sizes just in case. I'm not plugging for this company or representing them in anny way. I just believe in not drowning!

See the LIVE REPORT on the hull breach from August 17 at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmHNq4udqbRkhck - see the comments from Mike and Sandee as well as Douglas Robbie, their analysis was spot on. Thank you for another great video. I am glad you all are OK and doing well now. I am sure this was a very scary and nervous time for you both. It's probably my most major concern even over a storm or rough seas. From your LIVE video in August we know it was caused by a STRESS fracture due to the extra weight of the water tank in that position. And that the Pearson was originally designed for coastal cruising only and not blue water cruising. So the extra weight created force on the the hull in that area that was not originally designed for it over a long cruise. FYI for those that don't know about the PAN-PAN call [In French, a panne ([pan] - /pɑːn/, "pahn") 'a' as in father ]. Pan-Pan (x3) is the international urgency signal that is used as a preface to a VHF transmission when the safety of a person or the boat is in serious jeopardy but no immediate danger exists, but it could escalate into a mayday situation. For example, pan-pan is used in situations in which the boat has a slow leak or the engines are disabled and the boat is drifting toward a rocky shore. www.boatingmag.com/when-to-use-mayday-pan-pan-or-securite/
