MAYDAY RESCUED AT SEA | 82 | Beau and Brandy Sailing
For everyone that has asked about the green GOO, here it is: amzn.to/2MAeje6
This is part 2 of our longest sail EVER from Puerto Rico to Grenada. Find Part 1 here: • DAYS AT SEA leading to...
In this episode we have to call a MAYDAY because we are bringing on water that we can no longer keep under control. Everything we have tried is no longer helping keep the water out. This is the days of what happens during the time that we find the crack to being rescued at sea by two Grenadian fishermen and then finally making it to Grenada.
This is quite different from our typical videos, as we were only trying to document what was happening as we were trying to save our boat.
New T - shirts inspired by this video, be sure to comment below when you grab one, so we can give you a big SHOUTOUT! All proceeds of these shirts are going straight to helping restore Saoirse!

Beau you are some tough cookie, you held it really well together. The stuff that the fisherman gave you, maybe everyone in the sailing community should consider to have some on boat, wonder what that was.. Brandy you are sweet too :)

Probably a stupid question @ about 9:41 minutes into the video.1st hour 64 miles out by hour 7 your 63 miles out .@ some point in those 9 minutes u were 60 miles out..For a boat that has a crack in it and being a time critical, mentioning in the beginning of this where the inital explanation of waking up and realizing its leaking hope to pump it , stuff it while bolting to shore, a couple of shots with both of ypu deiving and manual pumping simotaniously - why are you still 64 miles out when at one point you both had pumped most of the water out? Appears you guys didnt have a whole lot of emphasis on getting to land.... By the way, I know absolutely shit about sail boating..Ski boats yes, sailing No.. Just boggled about the wasted time

After 28 years in the Coast Guard and having served aboard three Cutters, I learned a thing or two about damage control (just from doing drills - no actual incidents thank God). You all would have benefited a lot by having some plugs and wedges on board. Could have slowed that water a lot and would have kept the towels in place. But that green goo patch seemed to work pretty well, also. So happy for your outcome! God Bless!!

What can help in these situations is to have a hose pipe ready so that you can disconnect the raw water intake feed to the engine and feed the pipe into the bilge so that the engine picks it up and spits it out the exhaust. It may not be the panacea but every little thing helps.
@huskidawgs
@huskidawgs 4 жыл бұрын
Excellent idea. In fact, set this up as a ready-to-go bilge pump by preinstalling the new hose with a valve that you can turn to activate the pump action rather than raw water intake. Then in case you need it, the turn of a valve (or two) will instantly change the engine to a bilge pump,

My Dad is a Retired Sea Captain for an Open Ocean Tug Boat Company! During one of his trips to Hawaii and Back, on the Back Trip 1/4 of the Way back they Sprung a Leak the Size of a Silver Dollar. My Father was the one that was able to pound a Wedge into the Hole and Slow down the Leak. But the Seriousness of it all, was that if they had been even an Hour more out(7 knots per hour) they would have Sunk. I total Understand the Stress and adrenaline you both were on!!! I agree they did it out of kindness with no expectation of being compensated, however people offering to buy them a drink/donating (as most of us will never get to cruise the oceans) is a way of showing appreciation from afar. 👍. They essentially spent half a day waiting=half a day lost wages.

Flex seal is no lie good stuff. I had a client with a fiberglass pool take the light niche out and shove flex seal over the hole. It held for over 2 years. I dunno about the friction of moving water over it, but in a static situation it held back 3 ft of head pressure and the hole was about 10" wide. Had a few pieces taped over each other by 2 inches. And maybe 4" overlap. I know it stays on my boat.

Foremost, I am so very happy you two did OK and saved you boat / home. Toss the tape in the trash and buy green goop, wooden cones and wedges for leaks as well as a spare pump or 2 or 3. . When the towels were working you should have left well enough alone vs tearing them out for tape. Call to "advise" them of your situation the FIRST minute you had a leak not when you are losing the battle. Many boaters hit stuff floating and do not know it or sometimes it sinks them fast so be ready for it all but most of all, always keep an alert person on watch at the helm ready to take evasive action in a second when seconds count, not reading a book or watching a movie or below etc... Any landing is a good landing and this was a great learning adventure for you two. Learn from others and teach others what you learned. That's the boating community :-) Have you overboard bag and personal gear always ready and be ready to abandon ship on a second's notice. Best to you two!

I stumbled across this today when a random YT link came up on "abandoned boats at sea," and yours was in the link. LA cop car chases, Jeraldo opening "Al Capone's safe", none of it could compete with your drama! From the title of the video, I thought you were going down to Davy Jones' locker. Honestly, I was literally on the edge of my seat. After while I thought of that Hawaii-bound flight that was filmed landing with the top of the cabin fuselage gone, and you could see the passengers sitting in their seats; and the plane that landed on the Hudson river a few years ago. But with you guys, we were in the cockpit WITH the Captain and Co-pilot (First mate,eh?). Hollywood can't compete with material like this...ever! Big WOW!

I noticed it before in a couple of your normal days doing whatever, but a major thing you guys have going for you in a situation is that you're a great team together... You're both very fortunate in that regard each & every day, especially the peaceful uneventful days. Enjoy your youth, & rejoice in each other. You are each other's strength & weakness.

Sorry to hear of the problems. Glad you were able to make it to Granada hopefully an inspection will that that is the only weak spot in your hull and not others that may fail in the future. Would think maybe a couple of backup bilge pumps just in case might be in order. Definitely stock up on the green goop the Fisherman provided to you. Be safe, and yes I just ordered one of the shirts (anything to keep the Boat Afloat).

Definitely going to have gallons of that precious underwater epoxy, plus a heavier duty backup bilge. Thank you SO much for your support!! We appreciate it immensely!

OK you guys showed your total bad assness with how you handled that situation so I subscribed. Many folks would have turned on each other under that stress, glad you didn’t. When you get it on land and exposed I would love to see pics of the crack and the repair. Hope you get it fixed quickly, safely and economically. Hang in there.

Thank God you are both OK. Way to get after it, and not giving up. That's exactly what has to happen during an emergency, remain calm and work through the problem. It's hard but now you have been through it you can manage anything that is put in front of you. Great Job, you should be proud of yourselves.

Wow, this was a very heavy video to watch. Can’t imagine what you guys were mentally going thru...although we could see some of the mental strain in your faces. As a professional pilot we train for emergencies all the time. However, being 60 miles away from your port, at sea, at night (why do these things always happen at night?!?!) & taking on water is a whole different story. Glad you guys are safe. Sorry that your home has suffered some damage. Hope it can be saved?!?! Good job for staying calm = one of the most important steps in a emergency situation. No doubt your sea tale will educate so many boaters & especially you tube boaters who travel the world to have a good emergency water in boat drill & plan. Good job handling this every dangerous situation. And to those amazing fisherman Thank you for taking the time out of your day to go & save these two wonderful humans.

Well done you two...well, three actually...I think Una was also a hero. It is amazing that you managed to film anything whilst this was going on. I think everyone who watches this will go out and buy some green goop - even if they don't own a boat. I'm sure you could do a sponsorship deal with the green goop company ;)
