Hi friends ☺ Just wanted to clarify, this video was filmed before I headed to Melbourne for my surgery. I'm happy to report my surgery went well, it's definitely been a major life experience and a lot to process but I am grateful to have had such wonderful care & to be recovering well. I'll do a big update once I'm home next month but, until then, I hope you enjoy this vlog and my next couple of videos to come 🧡

Wishing you all the best in your recovery. Certainly seems like a great opportunity to read the books that you showed us in the video. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Boy Swallows Universe as it’s come up in my KZbin feed (I think it has been made into a movie?) Omg that salad you made looked so scrumptious. I’m totally going to try that. What a great idea to tray bake the broccoli kale and chickpeas. No need for croutons! 🥰 Rest up and take all the time you need to heal. If you haven’t been to Straddie yet I cannot recommend it enough. The gorge is something you have to experience first hand and I can see you falling in love with it. I first went there in 2016 and had no idea what to expect. Lots of great walking and hiking trails. Frenchman’s beach at low tide walking over the rocks. Just such an amazingly beautiful place. Xx 😘

Girl I definitely think you should keep the reading goal to one a month! If I can remember from the pod, you are quite a new reader so you don't want to discourage yourself if you fall behind. Going from a couple books to 12 books is a massive improvement :)

Agreed! Think doing 15-20 is a much more achievable goal - talking from experience haha. And then if you read more you'll feel even better about yourself!

Same thought exactly! Getting into reading is really just building the habit of remembering that it is something nice and relaxing to do. A book a month is a gentle reminder and if you enjoy it and end up reading more that’s great :)

Just an FYI: they throw away the dented canned foods because the dents can break the seal and allow bacteria to grow such as botulism. They throw them away because it is a safety hazard and I wouldn’t recommend buying any dented cans!

Amanda, I’m so glad you did well and got through your surgery alright. I know I said this before, but your 30’s are your best years, if only because you stop giving a shit and start living your best life for yourself and no one else. I was painfully self conscious in my teens and 20’s, but my 30’s really gave me confidence. It’s a natural process too, because I wasn’t practicing any self care lol. Now as I’m almost 49, I’m more self confident than I’ve ever been. So as much as I enjoyed my 20’s, I definitely loved my 30’s best because I naturally grew to love and respect myself, and as Whitney said, that’s the greatest love of all! Enjoy and so much love and happiness to you! ❤

My main intention this year from now on is to start reading before bed instead of mindlessly scrolling until lights out as I’ve done for as long as I can remember. I think I’ll start with The Joyful Vegan by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau.

I work at a supermarket, and we get rid of so much stuff that is absolutely usable, but not aesthetically perfect anymore, so people don't want to buy it. Other times we take those items off the shelves right away, other times they sit there until they expire, because no one wanted it. Single bananas is another thing that gets wasted, even people who only want one banana tend to rip them out of bunches rather than pick the already loose ones. We donate our expired/rejected items to a food pantry that gives them out or cooks free food with them, but I know a lot of stores that simply dump things in the trash, because it's the most viable way to get rid of them.

The books you've got are perfect for getting into reading!! Best to start with easy, addictive reads. Also try, One Day by David Nicholls and American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. Once you're into reading and want to read some more complex writing, try John Steinbeck! Start with Of Mice and Men and then try East of Eden.. some of the best stories ever written, in my opinion.

Amazing video as always! I’m glad your surgery went well under the circumstances and hope you recover as fast as possible ❤️ love these vlogs and talks they’re my absolute favourite especially when they’re more than 30 minutes! And I also find it quite interesting listening to your intentions! Personally I can understand the need to slow down - I’m usually so busy that I never “have nothing to do”. However I also HATE being bored 😂 but I think if for you making time to be bored also means making time to read that’s not really being bored at all? Great intention with the reading, love for books is huuuge! However especially as a new reader I think 24/year is a little too ambitious! Of course it heavily depends on the books (length and whether they’re more “easy reads” or not) but 12 would probably be much more reasonable and if you manage more that’s going to feel a lot better than going for 24 and missing the goal! some recommendations I’d love for you to give a try: John green “turtles all the way down”, Kate Morton “riverton” and Kerstin Gier “Silver”/“ruby red” trilogies. And since you mentioned your interest in more science-y stuff - Melvin sheldrake “entangled life” is simply mind blowing word changeing! Maybe it’ll even get you to like mushrooms so win win ;) I’m with you on the bean front btw - have been loving all kinds but especially white/butter since wayyy before the hype. Sooo creamy imao. Have to admit I’m a lil extreme though: I actually eat them cold straight from the can 😂 Sad to hear veganism is declining where u r - in Germany/Europe I feel like it’s still on the rise and becoming even more popular still. Even more reason for you to come visit! As for the supermarket issue I think that also really changes from country to country and probably even chain to chain BUT in most cases these “damaged” goods probably still get thrown out. In Germany I’m part of a voluntary network called food sharing - we save the food at restaurants, supermarkets, farmers markets etc. that would otherwise be wasted. Everyone can join and completely free. You wouldn’t believe the amounts of food we get that would otherwise be thrown away!

Hello, as an avid reader, I would recommend you create the habit without having too rigid of a goal. I have had years of reading 60 books, and other years of reading only about 30. It really depends on how long the books are that I am reading and how in-depth they are. For example, if I decide to read several classics, that is going to take way longer than reading middle-grade books. Mostly, just read what you enjoy, and make it fun. =)

Probably too late to comment about the reading goal, but depending how much you read at a time, I’d recommend one a week. You can divide the number of pages in the book by the number of days in the week eg. 300/7 is 43 pages a day. But you can even apply that to reading one book fortnightly or monthly 😊

Hiya Amanda, I hope you are recovering well! I recommend the book Tomorrow Tomorrow Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. It's one of those books where you just fall in love with the two main characters. Much love glad to hear surgery went well🥰 Wish you all the rest and time to recover! I think your intentions can really merge together btw! By building a habit when you have time, I think early mornings sounds lovely, to just take a book with you and go to a cafe and have a little drink (maybe something yummy) or go to the beach/nature have a swim in the ocean, or a nice walk and read there! This way you take time to be bored, read more, can be more mindful interacting with strangers, be more in nature and or check out cute foodie spots 🥰 One of my intentions is also to just explore more solo and enjoy time with just me :) being in nature and appreciate the present, check out cute spots on the weekend etc. I just booked a solo trip to seoul for the end of april and I am so so excited!

I love the new reading goal! I'm such a bookworm 🤓 Boy Swallows Universe is an incredible novel - Lola in the Mirror also by Trent Dalton is one of my favourite reads recently! Honeybee by Craig Silvey is one of my top books ever read, and I love anything by Jane Harper. All sensational Aussie authors! I think you'd also like Genevieve Novak novels (she's a Melbourne girly) and Dolly Alderton novels. Personally I found going to bed earlier and reading before bed to be a great way to build that consistency even if it's just 15 minutes, and taking my book to the beach as well anytime I'm going down for a swim. Excited to see what else you pick up! xxx

It’s true! I work for Trader Joe’s in California and luckily we are able to donate everything that isn’t spoiled to food banks, but if something is dented, the label is torn, has a bruise, etc., it gets pulled from the shelf and is packed up. I’m sure a lot of supermarkets just throw that all in the trash 😢

I think if you set a goal of one book per month (12 per year) that is easily attainable and you may even exceed the goal which will feel great. Set up a Good Reads account so you can find more books, review books and share what you're reading with others. You can also set goals there too. Boy Swallows Universe is freaking fantastic! If you like that, try Lola In The Mirror by the same author. Also check out No Hard Feelings by Genevieve Novak. Also hit up your local library. You will save loads of money on books!

I haven’t finished watching this whole episode yet and felt compelled to comment.. ☺️. I think you would find “Awake, It’s Your Turn” by Angelo DiLullo very interesting. Everything you are talking about from your intentions list is something that would be addressed in his book (edit to add: ok, he doesn’t talk about bangs in his book) 🤭 He also has a KZbin channel called Simply Always Awake. That chocolate tiramisu looks so decadent!! I think anyone who likes coffee could just sub coffee for the chocolate (or add it) for the soaking liquid. Hooray for coming up with a hit recipe on your first go! I will definitely look for that mozzarella. Thank you for the suggestion. Ok, back to watching the rest of this episode… ❤

@@AmandaDucks What a great word! That definitely ties in with your themes of community, introspection, forgiveness , connection and sentience. Mine this year is simply 'strong'. Not just physically strong, but also establishing and holding to boundaries, being resilient in adversity and the courage to be vulnerable. I don't know your partner's name, but I really like the name Asher (means happy!) so I'll refer to him as Ash.🤣 What is Ash's word? Or Kara's? Or Bonnie's? Or any of your friends! Its fun to ask people.
