I buy my air dry clay in large blocks like this once a year. It takes me a long time to use it up. I've found cutting it into usable slabs, loading into sealable food bags and vacuum sealing them keeps it as fresh as the day I bought it. Just closing up the plastic it came in wasn't working. A good inch of the surface was always drying out.

Hi, this is really nice!!! ❤️ I've been thinking of making pottery since long time ago but I live on the remote island and here there are no shops or anyone who's making pottery, but I have internet and KZbin! So, did I get this right: you don't bake this just leave it for 2 weeks or so to dry up? What about glaze: which product you use, please? Thank You in advance! ❤️
@aquietodyssey3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Maria! Thanks so much for watching. I love that you have that interest. Pottery making is such a relaxing activity. Maybe you can be the first one in your island to actively make it. That'd be exciting :) About the materials: - this is air-dry clay, so you're right, there's no need to bake it. - another cool aspect is that air dry clay is much more environmentally friendly than polymer clay (which is something I don't use, at all, because it releases toxic fumes when baked, even if in small amounts. Another reason why it shouldn't be baked in an oven where food is also baked). - the downside of air dry clay is that it's not food-safe. - one week is usually the standard to let pieces dry. Sometimes takes less, other times takes more. It will depend on how thick and big your piece is. The trick is: if it's still too cold to the touch, let it dry a few days more. - for eg., today I'm publishing a new video with a homemade Terrazzo tray in it and the clay piece took less than a week to dry. - for the glaze, I think any acrylic paint varnish works. I use Liquitex Medium Gloss Varnish and it does the work. - I think the varnish makes it water proof, but I haven't tested it. Hope it helps! :) have a lovely day!

@aquietodyssey3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rose! I'm glad you like my videos 💕 It depends on the piece. If it's big or perhaps very thick, around a week is needed. I would leave your pieces to dry for longer, to test. Two tricks: 1) clay will always be a bit cold, but if it feels too humid and cold to the touch, after a few days, then leave it to dry until it's almost to room temperature. 2) Put your pieces high up (on top of a cabinet or something). Since heat travels up, you can speed up the drying process a bit more by placing your pieces close to the ceiling. Hope these help! Let me know how it turns out ☺
@whiteroses._.03 жыл бұрын
@@aquietodyssey thank you for the tips. 🥰. I will try it soon. Besides, i would like to ask, i’m using the clay for pottery, Is it necessary to heat it in the kiln (?) if i’m not mistaken, to make it more durable? I’m new to this things, so i am still learning 😊
@aquietodyssey3 жыл бұрын
@@whiteroses._.0 Happy to help! It depends: if it says that it's air-dry then you shouldn't use a kiln. If it's fire clay, then yes. In this video, for example, I use air-dry clay. All I need is to leave it to dry at room temperature and that's it. With fire clay, the process is a bit different (usually, you'd need to fire it twice).

Wow nice work i love it. Also do you know about the slip (not shure of the spelling) it is something you can make or buy that is used to smooth your clay and remove the cracks. I think that you should know about it since i havent seen you use it and i think that its gonna make your life easier so how to make it :there are two methods. Method 1: take some clay and put it in water and mix it till its completely desolved and well mixed (consistency is your option) and thats it Method 2: dry little pieces of clayand turn them to powder and mix it with water. This method makes better consistancy and more effect
@aquietodyssey3 жыл бұрын
Oh, yes, I do know about the slip! I haven't been using it so far because I haven't needed it (I use some other methods I learned in my pottery class). But now I have the "recipe" for future projects, particularly the more complex ones I'd like to try! I absolutely love this community. Thank you so much for the tip ☺

@@aquietodyssey your welcome and can you pls tell me the other methods of it that you learnt inbyour pottery class
@aquietodyssey3 жыл бұрын
@@idk-us5sc Of course! So, when I was in pottery class I used earthen clay (I think it's what it's called), the ones you have to fire. And the teachers said that as long as you knew how to keep the clay not dry, without drowning it either, you would be fine in removing cracks, etc (besides using the tools like the rim). Plus, a slightly wet finger does the trick. This is air dry clay, but I noticed I can use the same methods. Now the most effective one I use is definitely "scoring": to make a few cuts in the area you'd like to attach other parts to (like scoring the tall pot in the video, as I prepare to attach the handles) and score the other piece (the handles, in this case) in the area that will be attached. Then you pick up a sponge, dip it in water, squeeze the excess and slightly tap the scored areas with that wet sponge. Then I attach them all together. It's how I make the bottom parts, as well. It sticks so well, even when the clay is wet :)

Hi, thank you so much for watching! This clay is not meant to be baked. It's "air dry clay," meaning it dries at room temperature. @aquietodyssey3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Nina :) glad you enjoyed it. I would say for you to make sure that you cover all cracks while working the clay (by using a potter's rib, for example). It's very important to cover all holes and cracks, to make sure air doesn't go in when it's time to dry. Also, keep wetting the clay slightly, if you feel it starting to crumble or dry fast. And the other thing is to cover the piece in a plastic bag or something similar, as it dries. This helps with making sure all parts of the piece dry at the same time, as much as possible. You'll get the hang of it as you go along, don't worry :)

I do pottery myself and wanted to try air dry clay. I don't understand a glazing process% Is it just a paint or some special covering?
@aquietodyssey3 жыл бұрын
Great question. So what happens with air dry clay is that you can basically use any acrylic paint (or any other type of paint, really) to give color to your piece. Air dry clay isn't waterproof or food safe, so you can color it as you wish. The "glazing" part isn't really glazing. I use acrylic gloss to make the piece shine a bit more. It's more of a protective layer against elements. But it's not a must, I just like the glossy look.

what’s the difference normal air dry clay (white) and the other one?
@aquietodyssey3 жыл бұрын
Hi! The difference, from my experience, is really just the colour. They're both very easy to work with and they have similar drying times.

Really beautifully made video 😍 Just have to say... it is NOT pottery if you use air dry clay 🙏🏻 Pottery is the art of ceramics, that is fired and hardened... So air dry clay is never "ceramics". 🤗 Aaand it is not glazing either, but simply painting. Glazing means basically to encapsulate something in glass. 😙
@aquietodyssey3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Ebba! Yeah, I'm totally aware of that, I think I got lost in translation :) my brain is just still used to my non-air dry clay days. I say glaze because it says so on the bottle of transparent liquid I coat the piece with, after 😂 Funny thing, I just remembered when I had my pottery training, my teacher wanted to smack me for saying "painting" instead of "glazing." But that was the real thing, she was right 😅

@aquietodyssey3 жыл бұрын

Yeah 😅, this video was published almost a year ago and I already changed the size to be more readable. The text is also in Portuguese but there are subtitles.

Thanks for the feedback, Maria. Those words are in Portuguese. My recent videos have them slightly bigger.
