I've never realized how clearly the military is built to diassociate, to separate, the actions of soldiers from their consequences. The guy who arests people on the ground, does not see what happens when they get sent to interrogation; interrogators do not see if the person had a family or all the subtle environmental evidence of the moment he was found; the interrogator don't see what happens when the person is sent to blacksites and is tortured; and the generals and politicians don't need to see the details in the whole process where they could build human empathy with these detainee, empathy would make their intended role harder. That's how it is humanly possible for people to take these horrible actions in the name of the State.

The reality of 'moral injury' indicates to me that man is a spiritual creature which knows in his or her heart that what has been done is fundamentally evil. If that is the case, how does one relate to the state that encourages this kind of behavior?

The testimony of this two veterans reminds me of the St Patrick's battalion (Irish) during the Mexico- Us war in the 1800's. most towns in Mexico have a street named ""Batallon de san Patricio'"" to honor them for seeing the truth!! Read about them!!
