The hard part is studying a language incorrectly, and ineffectively. Im not saying its "easy" but loads of people learn to code, but somehow learning a second verbal language is consider more out of grasp for people

Im learning swedish and I hooked up a AI TTS that sounds natural human with my Valheim playthrough. So when I for example, grow crops, I tell chatgpt that I am growing crops, write me a story about a man growing crops. So I literally hear and listen to the language of what i am doing in the game. Its very fun.

One underrated aspect of your channel is the fact that you highlight the other non-language-related goals you have - exercise, sleep, time with family - which I think for most of us is a lot more relatable than people for whom language learning is the single focus and who are able to spend every waking hour on it (not that I fault them for it!). But even when you're giving more general self-help advice you keep the language-learning thread through all of it, or even show how language learning can connect to those other good habits, which I appreciate and I think it fits your brand.

You need to find something that gets you super excited. When I was a kid, Harry Potter was my English teacher for quite some time, while my brother learned the language mostly through watching and reading about the NBA. If you find something like that, learning becomes "what you want to do" and not "what you have to do", so routines become part of your daily life without even noticing. One option which helps a lot too is only allowing yourself to procrastinate in "language X". That way, even procrastinating becomes productive 😂

Agree with a lot of these points. I've been learning Japanese pretty intensely for the last year, haven't missed a day with around 3.5 hours per day. Getting to the point where I can (very slowly) slow through simple books and understand just about any TV show with just a few look ups is motivation enough to carry on. This stuff works guys. Do it!

No language is easy. Take it from someone whose primary two target languages have been among the "easiest" for English speakers. It still takes thousands of hours for the brain to adapt so that everything just looks/sounds like it's "my" language.

That second tip is super compelling, I've not heard anything like it before in language learning. Will definately try this out myself. My current tl is Arabic, and I've found a collection of about 100 children's stories online (kinda like the Goosebumps series), so I'm gonna try and read all of them by the end of January!

Yeah, the problem with having niche hobbies is just how much stuff is in English vs how much stuff is in every other language combined. I've looked for historical miniature wargaming stuff in Spanish for a long time and haven't found much of anything. There's even a Facebook group for wargaming wars in South America that's mostly in English. With that said, when it comes to something mainstream, like reading about the history of Spain or Latin America (like a normal person), there's plenty to keep me busy. I honestly thought when you said do something else I thought you meant like gardening and listening to a podcast. That's worked for me really well since I have a job that I can usually get about 5 hours of listening twice a week or so. That extra 10 hours is huge. Btw, I'm so pumped that you're learning Spanish!! Buena suerte con todo :)

Yes to the third suggestion! I actually said this to a work colleague the other day. I’m supposed to be studying a course for work, but I was saying that whenever I have an extra few minutes I’m just drawn to Turkish (my new baby). It’s so bloody interesting! I made a joke that if the work course was in Swedish or Turkish I might actually be motivated to do it. And then I realised it wasn’t really a joke. Now imagine instead of a work course it was something really really fun. This is what Stephen Krashen must be talking about when he talks about ‘compelling’ input.

Those jokes are revealing, you had a "snilleblixt"! 🙂 In my case: I had never heard such a beautiful voice as Dmitri Hvorostovsky's when he sings Russian romances. I wanted to know the lyrics, and so I made a vague dream of understanding Russian one step more real. I took it in huge strides. Then Dima suddenly died, and I lost a bit of the energy; I only felt sad when I listened to him. But now I'm refreshing what I learned and am heading towards Ukrainian, because I have always been a peace-lover. There are all kinds of courses in Swedish, can I help you?

@@DNA350ppm Ah! That’s a good word! Haha, and you’re kind of right. Swedish started because of a mad ‘obsession’ with Sabaton, which grew in to a love of the language itself. And my Turkish crush isn’t imaginary… he’s my fiancé! 😂 Like Swedish though, I’m finding Turkish to be a sort of self-motivating experience, in that the language itself is genuinely interesting. Thank you for the offer of finding a Swedish course. Unfortunately this is one mandated by my employer, and not one I would have chosen to do for myself!

It does SOME of the same things, but to do all of the same things it's another $5 or so a month, so it effectively increases Netflix by about 30%. Besides, myself, I haven't had Netflix for a year. Edit: Also, I forgot, the big disadvantage of platforms like Netflix and Prime video are that often the subtitles have basically nothing to do with what is being said. I am watching a movie at the moment (watching it a lot) and there are three scripts that I'm aware of. The English (original), the Spanish dub, and the Spanish subtitles. The dub and the subtitles sound/look like they were created on different planets. It'll be like "I crashed my car yesterday and it's a write off" and the subtitles will say "We had a spot of trouble yesterday, we need a new car."

I definitely agree with regards to "Do something else" as I have found it immensely helpful to follow Spanish KZbinrs who cover subjects that I am interested in; baking, cooking, crafts etc - I learn new things and improve my Spanish at the same time. I have also found it useful to watch my favourite films in Spanish as well - currently Coco and Encanto are on repeat!

I hope you consider doing a response video to this person. It's a channel that is growing a lot for Mandarin learning. The woman is definitely very knowledgeable and her niche is accent coaching. She made a video bashing Input Learning. She basically says it doesn't really work and she misrepresents the heck out of it. In short, it's because she wants people to get her courses and book video sessions with her so she can work with you and use her learning methods, especially for accent and tones mastery. Her channel is called Rita Mandarin and the video us called " How I failed at language learning for 20 years"

I started using Lingopie last week and I really enjoy it. I also use Netflix, Easy Spanish, I am reading the Little Prince, and I do a little bit of grammar (not much really)... etc. I do not rely on only approach, but what I like so far with Lingopie is that it combines a few interesting elements: watching video at as slower speed + subtitles (like youtube) reviewing vocabulary with flashcards and games (without having to actually make the flashcards myself), and I get to chose which words I want to practice. When I read El Principito by myself (and check the French version) I understand most of the text right away, but I still need to select and copy the vocabulary if I want to learn/remember it later. Some days I feel like it, other days I prefer to simply click on words. Finally, reading does not help me with the accent (my great weakness) In Lingopie, of course you hear the words in the video, but also you have access to the recording of each word you pick when you review the vocabulary with the games. Easy and fun! But of course, there are free options for those who don't want / can't spend money on language learning. 30 years ago, it was weather books focus on grammar or classes... now there are so many method available that everyone can pick the way they want to learn.

Getting your passport is easier in Canada. I can just walk down to their office and pick up a form from the stand they have out. No appointments for that. Giving them the form takes longer cause you gotta wait in a stupid line though.

De Mi Rancho a Tu Cocina (i think that’s the name) is a great Mexican YT cooking channel if you need more stuff to watch. Do you remember what you watched early on in Swedish? @christopherstead8106 - So, I only recently learned that this is more complicated than you might think. Essentially, there are THREE symbols that can go above the line and look vaguely similar. BUT, some fonts only show the same 1 for all 3, which is basically where the 3rd one came from (it's a neither here nor there deal). Days of French ’n’ Swedish is correct. They are apostrophes and go in place of the "a" and "d". This is also correct on "... ’Tis the season..." Days of French 'n' Swedish would be what it looks like on some fonts, and therefore is still correct because some fonts (but NOT the KZbin font) can't differentiate between an apostrophe and a speech mark. Days of French ‘n‘ Swedish is an abomination and an assault on all that is good. Unfortunately, it was autocorrect and auto-spellcheck and such that led to anyone thinking this was OK. I have seen literal 2 storey high posters with "Get ‘em while they're hot!" or similar and it makes me weep for humanity. All other variations that involve the quotation mark or "backwards apostrophe" are also wrong. And FINALLY... the channel name was always using the neutral ' ' ' ' style ones because I thought KZbin's font only had that. But no! If you copy and paste from a Word doc using a font that has the proper " ’n’ " ones, it works! So your confusion was well-grounded... It should properly be Days of French ’n’ Swedish, but is acceptable as Days of French 'n' Swedish. Everything else is wrong and makes my eyes hurt, whether it inolves my channel or just "The winter of ’98...." Yes, ’ goes in place of 19. It's not "Well Mr. "98"... if that IS your real name..."

I, too, will be rising at 5 AM in the morning. I know it's fashionable with guys like Jocko Willink doing his "deadlifts at 4:30", but I'll be damned if being Up Before The Enemy isn't a pretty powerful way to get a hold on the day.

For me it's more the consistency. If I don't stick to 6 or 5, then it turns into 7, and then 8 and then 9 which turns into going to bed at 2... and then I'll often need to be up at 7 which means 5 hours sleep. You can actually see the saggy eyes even in this video because I had to be up early to film.

When not focusing on a certain region, 'Dreaming Spanish' is in my opinion by far the best option for beginners and it is even free. They have an awesome website that tracks all your progress. While I like watching shows and such, as a total beginner, I do not believe that they are as beneficial. Focusing on comprehensible Input that is directed towards beginner, will do wonders. After about 300 hours of listening I was semi fluent and from there moved on with native content only and started to look into why some things are conjugated the way they are.

A year ago, I remember watching Dreaming Spanish with zero hours of input in Spanish and understood almost nothing even in the Superbeginner videos. Ofc I understood a bit of the general message but the individual words except for the basic nouns sounded like gibberish to me. 300 hours in as well I am now watching the intermediate videos with 70-90% comprehension based on the videos. It's amazing how time seems to change things so quickly, when in reality it took hundreds of hours of determination (input) to push through not underestanding into understanding.

Would you consider making a video on exactly HOW you record your time in TL? I couldn't decide on the best format, meaning I didn't set a time-based goal, meaning I didn't immerse enough. Pen&paper notebook? Daily/weekly checklist? Dedicated app? I used a Word doc for awhile, but it got prohibitively long. Then, it hit me - spreadsheet. I have found many Comprehensible Input approach channels for Spanish, but they are all for Spanish of Spain, but I'd like to learn Spanish of Mexico. Any resources you would recommend?

Hi greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪, I love your videos and I'm only beginning my language in earnest this year. I really enjoy your channel and I found it very helpful. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on something.Until the age of about 7 my mum spoke to me in French 2 days a week but I always answered in English , my French comprehension has naturally developed from there and i can understand quite alot (with context). I study French in school but I've never really put much effort in until now. My mum tries to get me to speak to her in French but I really struggle with it because my understanding of the basic grammar and my vocabulary is so limited that I can't form a basic sentence(lots of passive knowledge). I find it very frustrating and discouraging and I want to be able to speak more do you have any tips for me? I know you're very busy but I cant find any helpful information online and I would love a bit of advice. Thanks a mil!

What about this tip: when you want to be really good at a new language, as to the level you, Lamont, have reached in Swedish, and when you are an adult learner, not learning only by imitation for years and years, THEN it is very helpful to stop and really reflect on the differences between your own language and the new language and your possible other languages. Not to look just on the vocabulary level, but how a language is built and glued and what it can do. So you can notice that we have car, kärra, kärry, Wagen, тележка, but also that nouns are gendered in some languages in this way or that way or not at all, that they might use cases or none at all, that they can be determined, numbered, and not at all, that they can be used for subject or object or indirect object, and that there are signs of which, or that they have to stay in a certain order in a sentence to know which is which, and that sentences can be of different kinds. And now to the interesting part: all of these differences are there to express what the speaker(writer) wants to say, with the help of the means, which that language has to offer. And then you get beyond trying to use the template of your native language - and finding the other language odd or difficult. This deeper understanding of your own language helps a lot when learning an other. So this language has genders and determined forms, but that has cases and fixed orders - not to express exactly the same things, but to make the content sufficiently clear between sender and receiver...

Goal + use it to learn other skills are just great things to do. Spanish is just a big language so you can check whatever you want in it, I would say the same thing with Japanese. I just started my third week in Japanese(shameless plug to check my channel for the 1st week progression) and it would be awesome to be able to check Brazilian Jiujitsu content but it is just out of reach FOR A WHILE haha.

I look for gemplay because just listening and trying to learn language from listening alone is absolutely boring because you understand 2 or 3 words every minute. So to not give up after 14 seconds at least I have something interesting happening on the screen to keep my attention

how does LingoPie this compare to Language Reactor and Migaku which both allow Netflix integrations? Also, I am enjoying the Story Learning so thanks for that recommendation

The problem with anything that allows Netflix integration is that you're then at the mercy of the subtitling team, who often have literally nothing to do with the team who did the dubbing (if it's dubbed) or don't care what was said in the original, so long as their subtitles make you able to understand it. LingoPie's subtitles are always word for word, which I should have mentioned in this video, because to me, that wins hands down regardless of the content. I'm watching a movie at the moment that's not a LingoPie one, and I am extremely familiar with the dialogue and the subtitles... and I doubt that there is a single line that is actually the same. It's annoying because I often know what the subtitle says, e.g. "Ahora escuchen todos!" but the dubbing character says something totally different, with a different meaning.

Hi! Well, it depends a lot on what you like. Ouino is very "complete" while LingQ is focused on reading, LingoPie on video content. Ultimately, you need enough words that your brain processes in the language that it can understand what's being said so that you can listen to and read normal stuff and eventually "drown" your consciousness with enough of the language that you can think clearly in that language. How you get that is up to you. I like to set weird challenges like watching 10 movies 5 times each or some such thing.

Hej Katten. I recently got myself a basic Kindle, and I can see it improving how much reading I can do. Like did you know it has a vocabulary builder feature? It saves words looked up in the dictionary to make flashcard style reviews. So cool. I get into things and have to do deep dives on the subject, then mention it at any opportunity.

@@daysandwords Well, they're not for everybody. Their latest album they actually released 2 versions. One in English, the other in Swedish. Also, the lead guitar player and singer of the band did the soundtrack for the show "Clark". It's a Swedish show so you'd probably dig it.

@@DanClapp Cheers for that. The band certainly sounds interesting, especially with the two versions of the album. As for Clark, I didn't rate it. I feel it was just Netflix cashing in on Bill Skarsgård being a famous Swede who was only known for English speaking roles.

När jag försöker prata med människor, så inser de snabbt att jag inte är svensk, och så byter de direkt till engelska och det är så jävla frustrerande. Jag har också svårigheter att hänga med konversationen när jag är i en sammanhang där flera människor pratar med varandra. Jag lyssnar på många podcasts varje dag och jag har ingen problem att förstå, jag vill också börja läsa svenska böcker, men jag känner fortfarande att jag bara inte är tillräckligt bra. Vad skulle du, som någon som har lärt sig svenska till en hög nivå, ge mig som råd att förbättra min svenska. Är det bara fortsätta att lyssna och läsa så mycket som jag kan?

Okej, jag har några tips men kom ihåg att jag inte ha varit i Sverige, alltså det här är inte baserat på erfarenhet utan på åsikt och gissningar. Jag skulle försöka ändra det som är det viktigaste vilket verkar vara att svenskar byta till engelska när du börjar prata. 1. Berätta för dem bara, till och med om det känns lite oartigt. Säg bara "Jag vet är det känns bekvämt å prata engelska men det går inte att förbättra min svenska på det sättet." De flesta kommer förstå. 2. Skriv ner några komplexa frasor och jobba på att säga dem PERFEKT. Ju bättre din svenska LÅTER med första meningen som sägs, desto mindre är chansen att en svensk kommer att "avslöja" dig. Om samtalet BÖRJAR på svenska och sen efter några meningar inser de att du inte är svensk, så spelar det mindre roll än vad de insåg i första början... om du förstår vad jag menar? Ibland har jag snackat med en viss person i typ 5 minuter innan han eller hon insåg att engelska var mitt modersmål. Ibland tror de bara att jag inte är svensk, kanske nederlansk eller nåt. Men SEN när de insåg detta, så fortsätte de på svenska ändå (ibland i veckor efteråt, när vi träffades upprepade gånger). Varför? Inte för att de tyckte min svenska var klockren utan att de hade vant sig med att samtal med mig skulle vara på svenska. Till och med några sekunder innan de inser kan vara viktigt. Du kan också fundera på att boka in lektioner med italki eller liknande. Då måste läraren prata svenska och du får också fråga DEM vad de tycker om hela grejen. Hoppas det hjälpte!

​@@arealnowhereman8255 Jag kan förstå att det är frustrerande, men du är ju inne på ditt tredje år bara, att lära sig ett nytt språk och förstå osv tar egentligen mycket längre än två år och hade du inte skrivit att du inte var svensk hade jag trott att du var det, baserat på det du har skrivit (speciellt då du fick med jävlar). Jag har inget annat att säga än att fortsätta läsa lyssna skriva osv så blir det bättre med tiden. Har en polare som kom till Sverige för 6 år sedan och har inte förrän nu kunnat prata med han på ett sätt som man gör med en som har svenska som modersmål. Själv håller jag på att lära mig spanska och är inne på mitt sjunde år, fortfarande värdelös, Lycka till!

It's borderline incomprehensible to me that getting a passport is that hard elsewhere. In Argentina the first time I got it I did it the day before travelling abroad and it took like an hour, it's a passport i don't know a single person under 15 in Argentina without one. And Argentina is the Zenit of pointless and broken bureaucracy

I've haven't followed this channel for very long, but I get the impression he wouldn't endorse stuff he doesn't find useful, unlike many of those sell out 'polyglot' channels. Lindie Botes is like this, she's honest and upfront about what works (for her) and is happy to suggest those that do (she also has a sponsored ad from lingopie). I don't see the harm in them getting money promoting something that they feel works, I'm sure with their audiences they could promote all sorts of rubbish to get a payout and they don't seem to do that. Moreover, should it not help you, you've still got two useful tips from this video for free

It's literally 22%, and you can easily substitute Lingopie with Learning Languages With Netflix or any way that gets you engaged with media in your target language.

@Uusaal - You haven't followed me channel or anywhere NEAR every video for very long if you think that this is the first sponsorship I've done or if you think I just take deals from whoever offers me money (since I've explained how sponsors come to be on my channel in several other videos). Oh, didn't watch those ones? Maybe you're new here and pretending that you're a veteran. You (and I, too, David) can totally ignore the mention of the brand or any such device, just use a textbook, a grammar book, lexica that you can buy in a secondhand store or borrow at a library - and even: everything you need for language learning you can get totally free on the internet and you can just make your own notes. Lamonts ideas are applicable and valid, but some of his viewers do think a mobile phone app is handy. I'd hate it. Find your own ways, I think that is Lamont's very convincing message, but don't be so stubborn that you think you can learn a language without somehow involving other people (like input from them in some form or the other). Discussions on YT is one way I myself keep up the active use of "my languages", there is always a learning aspect to it.
