The Maury Show is awesome because it basically did whatever it wanted to, and I think that's epic. I failed to remember just how much drama there is, though, so let's sit down together today, and relive a memory from a time that exists (i think).

I was a audience member back in November 2013. The reason why the audience reacts so wild and loudly is because they have a producer off to the side that tells you when to clap, boo, etc and who you should be cheering and booing for. It’s all staged. They also film 2 episodes back to back which air separately.

Having a producer there to tell you who to like doesn’t make it staged. They used to put out casting calls for anyone going through family drama during the commercial breaks. Stuff like “do you suspect your spouse of cheating but can’t prove it? Call the Maury show to have a lie detector test and find out the truth” Granted by the time 2013 came I was well past watching this or springer (which was definitely entirely staged) but with all the relationship drama I see on Facebook or Twitter from people I actually know? I wouldn’t doubt if at least part of this was actually true, though obviously dramatized.

Jeremy Kyle show the in the UK is a daytime tv show im so happy to say got cancelled. Turns out it’s most likely not even the first death caused by the Jeremy Kyle Show. What makes it worse (if it can be worse) Jeremy Kyle’s dad was the accountant/personal secretary for the Queen Mother and went to private school. He’s a pampered ponce punching down at working class people who’ve had nowhere near the opportunities he’s had.

We once watched an extremely triggering episode where Maury tortured a mentally ill woman with her fear of mustard in PSYCHOLOGY CLASS in order to learn about generalized anxiety disorders. And the class and teacher were LAUGHING. I had GAD and was forced to just sit there while my entire class laughed and mocked people like me. I had an anxiety breakdown afterwards. As such, I have had a deep intense hatred for Maury since.

@@theflickchick9850 I’m so sorry to hear that. I developed PTSD from SA in my younger years. Some bad anxiety and phobias came with that. That’s why I felt bad for thinking it was funny the first time when I was a kid. It just feels really wrong looking back. Thinking of how the audience reacted, too is sickening. Did nobody realize how cruel that was? I can forgive myself for being a kid and not understanding but the audience, production crew, etc…what was their excuse? Just to get money from shock value? SMH. I really hope it was just reality tv BS and not real but thinking back, the look on some of their faces was either superb acting or it was real.

I went to a taping of Maury once. You sign up for a day online, then everyone takes a shuttle bus from NYC to Stamford. Maury, Jerry Springer, and Steve Wilkos were all in the same building. Doesn't cost anything. There's a hype person in the audience to help guide reactions but for the big moments in the episode people are basically just reacting naturally. The audience really does go nuts on their own lol

A family from near where I lived was on Maury once. They were incredibly poor, and the producers basically picked them up in a van, drove them up to the filming location, recorded the show and didn’t bring them back. Apparently it took them months to get back home because they had to keep saving money for buses and taxis. And by the time they got home, they were obviously outcasted because the episode had aired.

Maury would come on just in time for me to come home from school to watch with my Mom or for it to be on in the background like LoFi. The audience is legendary and Maury as a host is Jerry Springer but actually funny. Paternity and lie detector tests, the extreme phobia episodes, the troubled teen episodes, the extreme makeovers, and who can forget the times that the audience in studio and at home got to become Transvestigators for a day? Also, the marathon runner cameraman put in the most work of them all. Honestly, the show has aged like milk in the sun but it's earned it's place in pop culture forever. It's literally a meme factory that brings people of every generation together. Case in point: the collab with Lil Nas X.

Maury wasn't always about paternity testing. Jerry Springer also started out as a respectable program and most talk shows were actually talk shows where there were people with different lives, points of views, stories to tell and they all, for the most part, talked it out to find a common ground but then someone threw a punch or tried to find the father and all talk show hosts in the 90s started sticking with what drew in the viewers and we all got trash-hungry.

Did you hear Maury offered to come out of retirement to Mathew McConaughey to do a DNA test between Matthew and Woody Harrelson to see onece and for all if they are half brothers. They both declined tho. So sad.

19:29 Andy, there's basically a big LED sign mounted from the ceiling, off-camera, that tells the audience when to react.

I had a family member appear on the Jerry Springer show. According to him the confrontations on these shows are semi scripted. Theyre given certain subjects to touch on, when to initiate arguments and try to get fan reactions. For the most part majority of the stories are real though with a few outliers where the people are just randoms who were introduced and given a fake story to run with.

so weird how the only testing they do for figuring out the father is a polygraph, which isnt even admissible in court??

Uh they definitely did DNA tests too, there were always ads for the DNA and paternity testing company they used. The lie detector test part was just for show.

These shows always used polygraphs probably for that reason like “hey you can’t use this in court and it actually kinda proves nothing but it makes great TV”

He literally showed the DNA results in almost every episode the only polygraph taken this episode was the guy lying about sleeping with the woman

So my cousin was on an episode of the Maury show about like 15 years ago. It used to be filmed in NYC. One of my cousin's friends asked him to come on the show as one of her potential baby daddies. Everybody knew he wasn't the kids father, but she had a semi long running arch on the show trying to find the kids dad. So I mean, you were spot on with the last one. My cousin got a free trip to NYC and they gave him like $500 on top of that. Idk if it's still that good cause it's filmed in Connecticut now I believe, but yeah. 😂

I can tell you first hand all the scoops as someone who was in the Maury studio audience in 2007-ish. They literally auditioned us. They moved us closer based on our reactions. My friend and I were moved to the first row.

My guy if you do anything in your life you need to check out the Jeremy Kyle show. It's the British version of this but it was actually banned from TV because someone committed suicide after being outed as a cheater. I used to watch it with my mum on my sick days and it was insane.
