Dayton Police Dragged Paraplegic Man Clifford Owensby from His Car; NAACP Says Arrest Was “Unlawful”

Clifford Owensby says Dayton police violently arrested him last month even though he is paraplegic and repeatedly told them he could not use his legs to get out of the car during a traffic stop. New police bodycam video shows the officers dragging Owensby out of his car and yanking him by his hair as he shouted for help. Owensby had his 3-year-old child in the car at the time of arrest. He has now filed a complaint with Dayton’s branch of the NAACP. “The officers should be placed at least on administrative leave,” says Derrick Foward, president of the Dayon Unit NAACP. Foward says that Owensby is expected to bring a case against Dayton police once all the evidence is collected, and he attributes the quick release of the bodycam video to recent police reforms advocated for in the wake of the murder of George Floyd.

The institution of policing itself is the modern version of slave catching. Police solve less than 25% of all crimes. They’re primary function isn’t preventing crime or apprehending criminals at all, that’s just PR. It’s criminalizing poverty, brutalizing minorities, and repressing protest of government corruption. PR makes a big deal about police being fired as punishment. It’s usually just payed leave. And they always are given their job back. They just go to a new precinct and get a new badge number. Ugh as a registered nurse that used to very frequently work with young men that were both paraplegic and quadriplegic... This makes me sick. I've seen these young men go through and overcome so much..... And still remain hopeful, positive, and maintaining a smile on their face and I always looked forward to hearing about the updates on their life being someone who was involved in their care closely for long periods of time....I can still recall many specific details about them over a decade later and hope they are doing well. This video broke my heart..... Just thinking that this could be one of our loved ones.,.. Police need better training.... Bottom line.... To deal with disabilities, mental crisis, medical issues, how using restraining devices and maneuvers can be harmful, how restraining methods can be deadly...... In the medical profession we are drilled and it's instilled in us that patient safety is the number one priority..... How .... In a service position to uphold the laws and protect the citizens is such behavior acceptable.... After my training I'd never think of doing something like this.... What type of training and exposure do they get to think that this is okay!

A big step would be to just decriminalize drug possession. Also before found guilty, you should go to a nice place where they have computers, so ppl can at least settle their business while awaiting trial. And you shouldn't be treated like a criminal before you've been convicted.

Their “probable cause” was something from 2008? The real criminals are the cops. Like this man said, if they act like this on camera, I couldn’t imagine the type of shit they’ve pulled with their cams off. As A quadriplegic and a american, that makes me sick! Not only for him, but the 3 year old who witnessed it! My daughter saw something horrific happen to me & never forgot it at age 2! Only thing im wondering is where is his wheelchair? No one i know in a chair leaves without their chair. Especially if driving cuz then if something happened and they needed to exit, you couldnt. Say a engine fire, or even getting in & outta the vehicle. How does he get in & out without it?
