Hey Dav, the '100 flower' is translated dorectly from their Chinese names. English is a language that usually only represent what their literal means. In Chinese, hundred can be the number 100 or 'many', while flower can be the actual flower or 'patterns', so the 100 flowers snakes are actually 'many/busy patterned snake'. Oh by the way, guy if you are interested in this species, check out our book 'the Asian ratsnakes and kind of greater China', I am one of the translation guy for this book. I hope advertising here is allowed😂

@hurtzdonut37353 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure but if I had to guess how the 100 flower snake got that name it would be because of the colorful blotchy pattern on it's body a lot of those look like rounded diamonds or like four leaf clovers and those maybe the "flowers" and because there are a ton of them they just say 100. Thanks for showing us this Daytona show I will try and attend the 2022 one 👍🏼

Dav whenever you get down to Puerto Rico I really hope you get the chance to check out the western parts of the island. The Puerto Rican boa is an extremely rare animal on the island now, thanks to Iguana’s and other invasive species, but it sounded like such a cool animal when I read about it on a trail sign. They apparently will hang from stalactites at cave entrances and catch bats out of the air as they pass by, totally incredible.

I don’t know if anyone commented yet about the 100 Flowers snake, but as soon as I heard that it’s range includes China, I had an idea as to where the name came from. In China’s full Red China days, Mao tried to look good by expanding freedom of thought and what not. This process became known as the Hundred Flowers Campaign, but ended when the allowed speech became too much criticism of communism.
@JeremyAndersonBoise3 жыл бұрын
Hundred Flower Ratsnakes are moderatley large, surprisingly fast and not likely to be happy to see you, in my experience. I like bitey snakes to some degree, and I still want them, biut be aware they are nothing like a corn snake in temperament. I’m sure that multiple generations of captive breeding will calm them down a touch, but they are, generally speaking, highly reactive animals.

Maybe the hundred flower snake is called that because the markings/spots look sort of like flowers. The Chinese and other Asian cultures can be very poetic when naming things, an example would be golden coins, which is just slices of carrot. Loved the turtle you gave the award, it looks golden it's so rich in color. Great tour, Thank you for the upload.

Wasn't it in 93 that they discovered the Blood line in the WC Boas? I still want to get back into Darts and Uroplatus phantasticus. Grampa's Balls is the best name for a reptile company. I believe the 100 flower snake gets its name is from the pattern, they look like abstract flowers. they have the petals on the out side of the blotches and in the middle its more broken up with darker or lighter spots in it like the middle of a flower.

100 flower snakes: I think it's their body patterns that gives them their name. I mean, **look** at it. They look vaguely like flowers in shape and the whole snake is just **gorgeously** busy . I wonder how bright the colours can get? If you found some individuals with brighter than usual colours--see if the brightness proves out, genetically. That would be fascinating. :-) My favourite snakes tend to be the brightly-coloured/patterned ones, so ball pythons like the Dreamsicle really get to me. Or, even better, the San Francisco Garter snake with all it's blues and reds and yellows. Love the variability of the Eyelash Vipers, or even the Rosy Boas. Coral snake lookalikes are sweet, too and rainbow boas, oh **yeah* !
