WOW I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR A BUMP FOR SKIN GENERATOR FOR WEEKS!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH U ARE A GOD
@ChristinaMcKay5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. I never export with the maps just because you only get a diffuse map. If you go to the surfaces pane and click on the map in the base color and then on "Browse" that brings you to the runtime folder of the character with the original maps that come with the product. In most of the cases there isn't only a diffuse but also a bump, a roughness or specular and sss. So you don't have to generate those maps.
@TravisDavids5 жыл бұрын
Whoa, didn't even know about this location, that is awesome! Thank you! For anyone wondering where u can access these maps directly from daz, look at this image i67.tinypic.com/4vfrq0.png The results from the default Daz Bump and Spec/Roughness does indeed look different to the custom maps I generate using Materialize but it's nice that there is an option to get them out of Daz, you just need to browse to that folder. It's strange that it's hidden like this and that the program doesn't just export it out by default.
@TravisDavids5 жыл бұрын
By the way i'm finding the original Daz Bump and Roughness to look a lot more coarse, even when i play around with the roughness and bump value. I think the baked map results from Materialize look better. Have a look at this image i67.tinypic.com/a2uosx.jpg
@ChristinaMcKay5 жыл бұрын
@@TravisDavids I agree, and I most always tone them down. I usually use the roughness with values at 0.2 to 0.5 in Blender's PBR shader. Bump depends on the project. Blender uses the bump in the normal channel (with a converter) so the results are different anyway. But toning the channels down and also using the roughness map in the specular or gloss channel in addition usually gives me good results. About the maps not being exported: Non of the common formats that are normally used for exchange like obj, fbx or dae is capable of exporting the maps as far as I know. If I export an object from Blender or C4D in those formats there is also only a diffuse.
@nevarran5 жыл бұрын
@@TravisDavids And many of the custom characters have really bad bump and spec maps. I'm often forced to switch those with the maps from some of the DAZ original characters, but naturally they don't match perfectly. So this tutorial of yours is a gem, mate. Appreciate it.

You can download the modified maps on my gumroad page gum.co/cuWRh You can also get 30% off all items on CG Trader for April by using the code TRAVIS CGTrader: bit.ly/2FRhRFC (30% off with code TRAVIS) 3D Scanned Models: bit.ly/2CPhVnb 3D Human Models: bit.ly/2TP7Igj In this tutorial i'll show you how to add more realism to the default daz skin maps. One of my biggest issues with standard Daz skin is that when it's applied to the 3D model it looks like plastic. That's because Daz doesn't output 2 important maps, bump and roughness. I'll show you how to quickly create those maps with a free texture generator called Materialize and then we'll apply that to our new daz skin shader to push it closer towards realism. The methods i use are reliant on baking maps from a diffuse map so there is no sculpting involved at all, it's just showing you how to add more realism to the existing daz maps. I'll be using Daz, Materialize, Photoshop, Cinema 4D and Octane Render with the tutorial to achieve the end results. Enjoy! 0:00 Sponsor 1:08 Tutorial

Great tutorial, Now this is what I learned last year, when exporting instead of selecting “collect maps”, choose “original maps”. Once you import your subject into cinema the corresponding maps will appear at the bottom. Here is the fun part, click on “face” for example, then color there you will see the file location for your subject. I normally cut and past the address into a new file explorer. There you will find all the maps you need, bump, normal etc. I cheat most times. I link all the maps that’s needed then convert them to octane, where a few tweaks take place. Hope this help,
@TravisDavids5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, yup i also convert maps to save some time. My biggest issue is that the standard daz bump maps don't look too great, the skin texture is very repetitive and coarse from what I've noticed. I honestly prefer the baked skin results from Materialize.

Cool tutorial! Just a few tips, using a Normal map generated in materialize instead of bump and you'll have slightly better reaction to light and won't have the edge issues either. Also recommend using Pathtracing over Directlighting in Octane as AO and SSS is far superior. Cheers!

Its due to the effect of material what is causing the edges to blur. Never used the app, but noticed it shift around with values quite harse. When therer is a stark contrast, like here from white to skin color it tends to do that. I tried deleting the white and use flaming pear soldify to sort of a blurred image to all the edges. It does look a bit better. THough now Materialize has a complete different outcome. Not sure whats happening with this app. It seem to be looking at very bright ares and then does the filtering on it. So me trying to fix that white area does not help at all. It also has an issue with dark skin textures.

You're welcome. I have a question. You mentioned roughness - would that be considered a specular map? Me coming from Poser and Daz Studio and working around Blender 2.8 I thought I should ask this. Thanks, again. ;-)
@HelpfulPlez5 жыл бұрын
Travis, is there a difference between the bump generated by this software versus the bump maps supplied with any Daz figure? If you render through Daz Studio, these figures typically have a gloss map and a bump map already applied. Maybe you explain in the video and I didn't catch it, but is there an advantage to using these maps instead? As I understand you're just comparing this to using only the diffuse map when it's exported to another program.

Thanks so much for the tutorial! How do you set the SSS? ps .The original maps ( bump, roughness, specular,normals, etc) are in the DAZ folderr " Runtime---->Textures". Looking at your final renders, i think it misses a specular map, that normally works together with a roughness map. The skin looks to reflective overall i think. The trick is very nice you showed. But i think i need to look for a better app then that Materialize, the downloaded version doesnt work, i found one working. But the app seems to have some issues, mainly that blurry edge and also working with darker textures
@RomboutVersluijs3 жыл бұрын
Seeing the intro, ive almost always see normal maps in Daz model. Your example was clearly missing those, was that a very old character orso? Havent seen that in ages. Quite nice you showed the method. I used to use CrazyBump on OSX, ive transfered to Windows a couple months back and totally forgot about this app. I knew it existed but kinda forgot about it since it is Windows only. Thanks for showing the app again :)

Do wonder why you use oldskool bump vs normalmap. Bump map has no information for lighting to show better in the render. I 100% use normal maps, if they are not there i create them my self, the differnce is day and noght in materials

Thanks for this great tutorial. so, what you suggest is to only use a couple of maps, I get confused with all these different maps, which ones do we really need. I think the diffuse and either a bump map or a height map (used as a bump map), and metalness? I don't use Octane or Cinema4D, do you create a separate Occlusion (GI Diffuse) map and use it, or is that part of Octane Render itself?
@TravisDavids5 жыл бұрын
For the purpose of this tutorial and for this skin shader, just the diffuse, bump (generated from the height in materialize) and the roughness (generated from metallic in materialize) is needed. I'm not creating a separate occlusion, i just change my GI mode directly in octane to Diffuse, it tends to give me more accurate results.

Daz Iray renders some great looking stuff. I am 3D asset creator and use mainly blender and sometimes Marvelous Designer to create things, but my go-to for rendering scenes is Daz, especially since I’ve built up such a big library of assets. @TravisDavids5 жыл бұрын
Hi, it's possible. Keep in mind that these are just regular bump and roughness maps so they can be used anywhere. If you can somehow replicate the settings of the octane shader the skin can look identical. It shouldn't be too difficult as i didn't alter the octane shader material settings too much. I just plugged in the roughness and bump and played around with the value that controls the intensity of the roughness which i'm sure you can do in Unreal Engine as well. You would also have to replicate the light setup in unreal using area lights to get similar lighting results as well because the lighting plays a very important role in these images.
