Selecting CPU and Graphics cards does not render with only the CPU. I use this setting all the time and my graphics card is used. In fact it renders faster with both selected. The only negative I've seen is when CPU is selected, it will slow down other functions on the computer if using those functions while waiting for a render to complete.

I know this is old, but I feel like I need to add something here in case someone comes across this. I also had them both enabled, but my renderning times where very slow in some scenes. Turns out that my VRAM was full and that having both enabled means iray will 'fallback' to CPU even if the CPU fallback check is turned off. I now have it disabled, so I actually know when it's using my CPU. Also you can fix the lag in CPU mode now, with the cpu load limit. Just decrease it by one and it will use one less cpu core.
@seanthiar

Easy to change - just stop DAZ to use the whole CPU. I have a 8 core /16 threads CPU and I allow DAZ only in the render settings advanced tab to use 12 of the 16 threads. That gives me 2 complete cores for other things to do and it is still faster.

When it comes to lighting the scene I would suggest using ghost lights instead of the built in spotlights in daz studio, in most cases I found that ghost lights reduced my rendering times by almost 50%. #1 factor for anyone with less than 48GB of VRAM is the total memory buffered to render the scene. If you have 2GB of VRAM or less, your GPU likely isn't going to assist your render at all unless it's a primitive scene. (like a low poly prop) The geometry of mid poly characters will run about 60MB of ram. Adding Iray material to the character will push that up to 400-800MB easy. The entire scene must buffer in VRAM or iray defaults to the CPU and only uses VRAM as swap space. You need to decimate your scenes so that there are as few polys as possible to keep total memory consumption low. When you notice that the scene isn't as sharp as you want, keep going, you're about halfway there. In fact, you're about halfway to getting started with pre-renders. #2 Light/emission surfaces will totally jack up up your render times. IRAY materials and shaders will seriously increase the total VRAM required. If you run into an incident where the total memory is lower, that's just because the 3Dlite texture is poorly composed and could/should be optimized. Know the following; A) The amount of memory needed to calculate the scene can/will (most likely will) push you outside of your VRAM buffer limit. Create a locked camera position and render just the background and props with even intensity lighting so you don't create unnatural shadows. Break up the entire scene so that it's a series of panels called "billboards" with the rendered 2D picture as an overlay. You should cut the majority of your vram requirements and total render time to a small fraction of the total render time. The only 3D objects in a scene should be in the mid ground and you can even break that down into another cluster of fore, mid, and background. B) The primary calculation of "iray" is the calculation of scattering of rays from surfaces... Going heavy on the effect will run up the render time. Mirrors, glass, glossy paints, and all that good stuff comes at a price. That price is time on the Render.

Daz Studio can only use 1 rendering device, GPU or CPU. You want your graphics card to be your main rendering device as your graphics card is built to handle the requirements of rendering. The more ram your graphics card has, the more items you can have in your scene such as several HD characters, HD clothing, HD Hair, HD environments, etc... Daz Studio will always default to CPU rendering if your scene is bigger than the ram on your graphics card. I hope the above information helps.

For GPU rendering with Iray you need an nvidia graphics card. The reason for this is because Nvidia created the Iray render engine and therefore do not want their competitors graphics cards to use the Iray render engine with GPU rendering.

Self-taught Daz user right here, and after watching your videos there are some few things that I'd like to mention: - Like someone else said already, hiding the objects in the scene without deleting them, prevents totally from getting calculated when rendering. - About the denoiser, personally speaking I strongly advise to NOT use it. I'm saying this because I find that it's quite aggressive with all of the scenes, and when it does get in action to get rid of the grainy, at the same times it gives that "washed out" looks that is really awful to see for the eyes. I've rendered quite a few scenes (let's say even more than a few) with this method using the denoiser within Daz (because of my 4GB GPU), but if I have to choose and suggest another better alternative that is way less aggressive than this one, I will suggest the "Intel Denoiser". There's even the "Nvidia Denoiser", but even that is aggressive as hell, probably even more than the Daz one. Of course if you don't have an "Intel" CPU then using the Daz it's your only option, but in that case I will strongly suggest you to manage better your lighting inside the scene for avoiding using it! - And last thing, when speaking about the "Advanced" tab in the render settings, it needs to be said also that even if you have two GPU's selected, Daz will only calculate one and will not sums the whole GB available for both cards. Meaning that even if you have two GPU's of 8GB, you'll not have 16GB. You'll still have 8GB. Only the speed will actually increase, but other than that, the VRAM available will not combine with one another. I'm saying this because there are so many out there that still believes that having two, three, four GPU's etc.. will actually help the renders, but it's not. If you need VRAM, just buy a 16GB cards or either way more than 8GB if it's not enough for you. Don't waste money on buying two GPU's.

If your getting “washout” for denoiser you have some other problems. Wash out is from over exposure. Denoiser does not add light to your scene...denoiser is basically your system guessing what a render should look like before the render completes. If your creating a VN and time is important on each render denoiser works very well. Secondly you’re right 2 cards will not give you more memory, however nvidia uses cuda cores to process information. These cuda cores do add together so 1 gpu with 2000 cuda cores add a second gpu with another 2000 cure cores, now you have 4000 cores. GPU memory is for the size of the scene you can load to render, cores effect the speed. I have 2 1080ti that render complete scene in 20 min, where my old 1070ti would take hours for the same render.
@diabolik223
@diabolik223 4 жыл бұрын
@@madbone1165 To be honest.. no. It's not because of the over exposure. I barely use little to none exposure in my renders, since I'm not an expert in photography. So.. unless it's daz being daz like always, pretty sure that it's that. Of course, we can have two different view of what a "washed out" look is it, so I won't dwell further in this one (since I already had a comparison with other artist and we all have a different opinion of this). Second, in fact I said if you read it again, that two gpu's will increase the overall speed of a render. Only that tho. I never said otherwise. If you're after more speed, go ahead and buy another GPU of course, but if you plan in do so because you think that you can add more VRAM with another, then don't waste your money. This is what I said, mostly.
@madbone1165
@madbone1165 4 жыл бұрын
Andrea Lauro oh yea sorry I see you said that about speed. I guess the comment being that it seemed you were down playing the 2 cards..I mean if you want to sit around for hours for waiting for scenes to render sure go for it. If you are worried about memory but don’t want to shell out $1200 for 11gb card but want to render more than simple scenes then pick up “scene optimizer” from daz, which is good for even 2 card systems. This is the fastest way I’ve found to get BIG scenes and increase render speeds
@madbone1165
@madbone1165 4 жыл бұрын
Oh and I’m sorry I also had it backwards “wash out” under exposed but again denoiser doesn’t add or subtract lighting. But denoiser works as a guessing system. It smooths out the pixels and keeps doing this until it reaches 100% convergence. Not using denoiser you don’t get the smooth pixels until almost 100% convergence and appears grainy. But at 100% both renders should look exactly the same. I find at anything above 50% denoiser looks very good. But again my factor is time as I need to create 200-300 scenes in a short amount of time and still have quality without grainy renders.

@RavenGaming One of the main problems is that vendors set up their scenes to use Iray without knowing a lot about how Iray calculates and renders a scene. Such that a lot of surfaces have far too high reflective values. If the vendor uses a default script to convert 3DL materials to Iray ones, you will see they all have reflective values of .5 which means they will bounce back 50% of the light that hits them. This is not accurate but it does mean you will get grainy renders and/or fireflies (white dots) So the first thing to do is to go through the surfaces of everything in the scene and knock that reflectivity down. Also experiment with the diffuse roughness setting, a lot of the time this will be 0 and again that is wrong. Another thing that you can try is to set a different path length ( found under render settings->optimization ) By default this is set to -1 which means infinite, try 6 or 10. I would have to check this to determine if this means how long the ray will live, or how many times it will bounce before it 'dies'. Here is an article that better explains most of the settings in Iray. ( levelupjei.com/daz-studio-rendering-settings/ ) Hope that helps.

@@Ramaihaholic Also experiment with denoising as Parmy mentions, though bear in mind that denoising can(does) blur an image slightly, you can reduce the amount of blurring in the settings. I am using the latest version of Daz studio ( 4.14 pro) so can't tell you exactly what options you will have. They can be found on the render settings tab, under filtering. If you read my explanation of how Iray calculates the final image, fireflies are unresolved pixels, that is to say that the ray(s) for that pixel either died before returning a colour/tone value or returned differing values such that it doesn't know what colour/tone it should be. Usually the former. Increasing the number of samples can remove some of them, and the grain, but checking the surface properties is one thing I will nearly always do if I am using a pre-built scene for the first time. Others suggest rendering at a higher resolution then reducing the final image to the size that you wanted. This can cause more problems and because of the way Daz studio presents the rendering settings, some people dont realise that when we increase the overall size of the render, we are reducing the quality of the render, since some of the settings are based on a time limit. In essence we are asking it to render more pixels in the same amount of time. Good luck :)

Oh Dear Parmy, you have gone down such a rabbit hole with this one. Your generalisations could end up giving people bad advice. One. Removing something from the camera viewport reduces the time it takes to render. ( Actually it can increase the time the render takes if that something was stopping rays leaving the scene such as back and side walls in a room) Two. You seem a bit ambiguous in whether adding lights will increase or decease render times, In general more lights can reduce render times, and/or improve render quality IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Three. You talk about using point lights and how Iray will have so many more calculations but you only touch on WHY, but more importantly than that, Iray uses something called Bi-directional path tracing. We need to look at how the computer renders a 3D scene to better understand this. In essence there are two types of rendering. Biased and Unbiased. 3DL uses biased, Iray uses Unbiased rendering.(unless you change the render mode to 'interactive' AFAIR) When using Biased, the computer fires imaginary rays into the scene FROM the camera plane. ( For the sake of argument let's say it fires one per pixel to start with) These hit the scene and then one of several things can happen to each ray, it can be absorbed, or bounce off an item, or pass through but be deflected off its course (refraction) and so on. Some of these rays will eventually reach a light source. The computer registers what happens to each ray and that determines the colour and tone of that pixel. This is not how we see things in real life of course. Hence Unbiased rendering. In this method Rays are initially fired FROM the light source(s). As you say, if that light source is a sphere, then rays will be fired in all directions, some of which will find their way into the scene and a smaller portion will find their way up into the camera pane. (Only rays that reach the camera plane will contribute to the final render.) This is why unbiased renders will always look more photo real than biased ones and why they always used to take so much more time. However with the introduction of the aforementioned Bi-direction path tracing, now the computer can figure out which rays from the light find their way to the camera and thus send more rays in that direction than the ones that went off into the ether without contributing to the render. So your point is true to an extent. Personally I will use point (ghost) lights if they are going to be in the viewport and I want to refine a dark area. Spot lights are directional yes, but you can also use a primitive plane, just make sure it is only firing light in one direction to save on those clock cycles ;) That is enough for now because I dont want to appear to be pulling your video apart. Rendering and how to reduce the time it takes is far more complex than can be covered in one 25 minute video and you have tried to cover as many options as possible in that time, albeit with some minor mistakes. See my reply to @RavenGaming for more information about how to get better renders AND reduce render times.

Thanks for your constructive criticism. I will take your learnings and do better with any future videos I create. Since you have far more knowledge than I do why not start your own KZbin channel to share your learnings and help people get better at their craft?

@@ParmyBaddhan To be honest, I am thinking of doing one or two YT vids, but on how to model something in blender and then take it into MSFS. I only use DS from time to time these days but have been using it on and off since it came out and overtook poser. Before then I was using poser, and have been messing around with modelling and rendering since about 1990.

Bottom line: iray blows ass juice... Don't even bother with it. Just use 3Dlight, with the right setup you can get pretty close to iray quality using Uber light environment 2 with HDR images

If you're happy using 3delight then keep using 3delight. Unfortunately, I won't be covering 3delight in my KZbin videos as Iray is the default render engine for now.

@@ParmyBaddhan it's a comment for other people, not everyone out there has a super fast computer, in fact most people don't. And even if you did have a super fast computer why the hell would your waist your time with daz when so many other 3D programs are far better. Waiting an hour to render a single image for a comic is shooting yourself in the foot just to use something that requires some serious PC upgrades. Average comic has 5-6 pictures a page and are 30 pages long (front and back). In the end it's simple math time vs quality. Either way images end up in Photoshop regardless of iray or 3Dlight. On a personal note if you have a KZbin channel and are looking for subscribers common sense would dictate to appeal to the masses, the masses being people still using 3Dlight over iray due to the expenses in buying a high-end computer. Something you may wanna consider.

@@christopherflynn6743 Ahhh leave him alone, it's called choice! I've got a ole mashup machine & dying to try out dforce, but unfortunately I have to be a little match girl & view the wonderful stuff dforce can do from the other side of the 📺screen!..... Until I can afford to upgrade. 😏

@christopher flynn But how close ? Are you trying to claim that biased rendering can yield results that are close to unbiased ? If that were the case then why did the industry push so hard to move everything to unbiased and why have so many of us bought RTX cards ?
