What Eric does in particular is called a False Cord Scream, which is why his scream is so clean and clear when he does it and why it’s so explosive. He’s essentially relaxing his vocal cords to sing while clenching the upper part of his throat in a way that interferes with the sound, creating that gritty and raspy tonal color. Finding out you can do it is difficult. I found mine by singing to “Reincarnate” and “Thoughts & Prayers” by Motionless in White. The register takes some use of breath force, so sustaining it takes quite a bit of work because you have to really find where you can scream without using as much air while getting the same effect and volume. If you listen closely, you can actually hear that Eric tends to use his upper vocal register when screaming because it’s easier to use a false cord scream while using falsetto. His regular register, when using a fry scream, is a significantly lower pitch because his voice isn’t quite that high. In short, finding out you can use that register is very difficult and takes quite a lot of experimentation. Most people who find it will never go anywhere with it and a huge portion will actually do it in a way that causes vocal damage. It’s a gnarly register that, when done right, is super heavy and powerful but if done wrong can lead to you losing your voice permanently.
