The airpump during during is game changing. You go from a few minutes to over 90min of airflow sufficient to breathe. It's the most innovative tech in airbags technology since the coming of electronic systems. It will for sure save lives.

like a freakin scuba tank. i hear stories of how old school divers' gear was so clunky, times were shorter, etc. and i cant wait until backcountry gear is talked about the same way. these types of new ideas and innovative projects by new companies is where lives are saved. although still this is basically not compatible without an airbag/added backpack $$$$$$ cant wait for this stuff to be cheaper as well!!

Can the Safeback SBX travel internationally or are there issues flight wise due to the batteries?

You can fly with it no problem. Just carry-on the batteries, as they're only AA.

@@tribalart88 energizer ultimate lithium is the AA recommendation - flying with them is no problem. And they’re also easy to find internationally as a bonus.

Unfortunately this bag is so small… I would love to see updates like : ice axe loop, bigger like 20L or maybe 30 for splitboarding to be able to fit all the utility gear.
@motherhucker

You can carry an axe, as the horizontal straps are tuckable and create smaller loops. You can also go old school and use the diagonal carry loop if you so choose.

Interesting tech. Why not create a pack with heatsinks in the back to help melt the snow? Generate hot air to melt the snow, melt the snow to create O2 and HOH particles, but more importantly shrink the occupied snow-space around the target-victim.

Interesting idea! One thing that is important to stress is that our system is designed to push air through the snowpack, meaning it doesn't require you to have an air pocket in order for your breathing area to receive supplemental air from the system. This has been thoroughly tested in a variety of snow densities and in burial simulations as deep as 1m, and is spec'ed to be able to generate enough airflow to stabilize the air quality in front of the face through the small pores of the snowpack. Air pockets will only mean the system works better, with less resistance to supply air to the victim's mouth and nose, but are not essential for air from SBX to reach the victim's face.

@@safeback-avalanche-gear It seems like periods are hard to come by, but more importantly, the product rely on the idea that a closed pocket of space (inside the back portion of the vest) to circulate a limited amount of air inside a closed system to prolong the user’s ability to survive, that’s the product niche. If an individual becomes the victim of an avalanche, and they have the product, they can prolong their survival. Understandable. There are two important issues i see with this product. One, inside the system where the victim is encased in snow from an avalanche, there is a limited amount of air. We can’t assume that air is magically going to appear, or channels and cavities will made after the avalanche settles. So O2 supply is in high scarcity. Two, it’s important that the victim of an avalanche, the victim needs to be evacuated from the system as soon as possible. Time is against the person trapped. If the victim doesn’t expire from suffocation, they will eventually face hypothermia and starvation issues in the long run, and that’s assuming the individual has no injuries or medical conditions that are detrimental. My philosophy is self reliance, and i take it the philosophy of your product is self sustainability. If I was in a situation where i was the victim of an avalanche, I would rather focus on removing myself from system versus waiting for others to save me. Not everyone is going to be as independent as me, but if you have a hair dryer strapped to your back with a battery, your chances of survival goes up the minute the apparatus is active.

@@safeback-avalanche-gearhas this been tested with a real human breathing under snow? If yes how does this work with the fact that breathing under snow creates an “ice wall” in front of your mouth due to humidity of your breath. How can you breathe through that ice wall?

Be interesting to see how it compares to the airbag in a kinda head-to-head style test. I'm sure that, ultimately, a bag with both could be the way forwards. The issue with testing is that it involved burying a human alive in proper avalanche snow which is hard to simulate and exactly what we're trying to avoid in the backcountry in the first place. @birdymeo makes a good point about the icewall. Looks like the vents are fairly near the face so as long as a vent and your face are in the same snow compartment, it would be ok. Moving your arms to create space is only something you could do inside an active avalanche. once it is set, you'd have as much chance as you would digging up a road with your bare hands. What about inflating the airbag with oxygen, can the system run with enough pressure to inflate the airbag and then continue feeding air into the chamber afterwards if the victim is buried? I giess the airbag needs to stay inflated while the snow sets and can then deflate creating mroe space and releasing the oxygein into the victim's air pocket
@Anukulous
@Anukulous 10 ай бұрын
@@mattwoodford1820 i think the idea of the airbag is you need to inflate it before you are incased in a deeper layer of snow and everything becomes static. I would look at the avalanche as a sea of larger water clumps or powder, and you use the airbag to stay above a target level of snow layering. Thus the deeper you are under the avalanche, the harder it is to find you, and the target person has less chances to survive. If the target person is closer to the surface, the easier it is to find them and possibly they can pull themselves out. The idea of using the backpack to push out more oxygen would require a tank of oxygen. The question becomes how much you need, the weight, and how much longer will it help you until you expire.
