Wow thank you so much for this. A friend is having this surgery on Halloween (she picked the date, ha!) and this explained a lot so she didn't have to. I'm so glad this went well for you and you've had excellent results. Medicine really is amazing!

Thank you for posting your story. You certainly didn't pull any punches - which I really, really appreciate. I'm scheduled for DBS sometime over the next couple of months. My PD isn't as advanced as yours but there has been enough issues that the surgery was recommended by my neurologist / MS. I'm looking forward to feeling / moving "normally" and I do realize that DBS is no magic bullet for PD sufferers. That said, I see it as a bit of a gamble or a risk v/s reward which I'm sure I'll be debating until the very last minute. Thanks again!

Bickle Seagrave trailer guy good luck!!! You definitely dont have to be as bad as i was to have dbs. Actually the earlier the better to an extent. I mean i would never tell a stage 1 to do it. But if you are a good candidate and it is impacting your life why not get relief? Besides PD is progressive so why wait for a disease to get worse when you could have had relief in the meantime. Good luck on your dbs. Its always scary and i made this video because i wish i was told these things. Its definitely a horrific surgery and recovery sucks. But its 1000% worth it to not have to live like that anymore. Best of luck!!!

I am a DBS recipient. But for cluster headaches. I actually had 4 surgeries. I got an infection and almost died. I have many videos on my channel. Sadly DBS did not help me for CH. I have friends who have DBS for PD and successful. DBS is a serious major surgery. Im blown away how seniors have this done because it kicked my butt. There is much more but I dont want to upset anyone reading this. I am happy it worked for you.

Wow, fascinating! I feel like the part that would freak me out the most was drilling the head-cage to the table, meaning you couldn't get up and leave (not that you want to, but, in theory). But I suppose the drugs/twilight stuff they gave you would temper that. Really interesting, thanks for sharing. Nice for people to know what to expect if they should need brain surgery... I feel like when things are explained like this, it makes something less formidable. cool

blackngold cuttlefish for sure, yay drugs! Lol. I was most afraid of the cage too, but it was actually really not bad! I can still point to the spots it was at but it was surprisingly painless! Anesthesia said i wasnt supposed to remember it, but i have a crazy high tolerance to those drugs. What knocks out like a 300 pound guy little 105 lb me at the time was just hanging out lol.

What kind of "twilight" drug was it, just curious? (If you know!) I've only had the type that knocks you out all the way (def not supposed to be awake during it lol). Also, when they were drilling into your head, you said they just used something like Novocaine/local anesthesia. But you didn't feel that (the drilling)? or the cutting? or is that when/why you asked for more anesthesia because it was beginning to hurt? Sorry to be nosy, but again it is interesting. The only TINY compared to what you've been through thing I can compare to were my gum graft surgeries (I know, not even comparable). I was obviously awake for those, the first time was kind of "fun" because it was weirdly interesting to watch, but the second time he didn't give me as many shots so I could feel more of the tugging/cutting. but with your mouth already open, you kinda can't say anything... But anyway, mine was just superficial gum cutting...not skull drilling or cutting...guess that's some strong numbing stuff haha.

blackngold cuttlefish yes they gave lidocane shots to numb! And twilight sedation is a combo of fentanyl (a short acting opiod) and versed (a benzo). It makes you sorta foggy and sleepy but youre usually still responsiveish as in you can move on command. Most people are pretty knocked out by it but im wide awake. I appreciated the pain relief at the very least!

And the lidocane shots were enough?! That's just surprising to me! Thanks for explaining the twilight sedation, too. I've heard that kind of thing explained before (in fact, my mom claimed I'd get it for the gum graft thing) but I totally didn't, so I thought it was a myth. But it's nice to know it isn't. And yeah, I would imagine if your nerves are on high alert, the sedation wouldn't really work completely. Glad the pain relief helped though!
