Most YA novels are filled with that kind of self insert mentality in mind. It's literally a common thing in those types of books, which is why most of them kind of suck, but they still sell cause the point of a lot of YA novels is to give young readers a self insert fantasy story.
@KitsyX4 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, not necessarily... Writing has many different aspects... Descriptions, dialogue, character, style etc... Of course, the best writers will be great at it all, but you could still be pretty good at some areas and bad in others, yet still be talented... Also, many people have multiple facets of their character, so it might not be as straightforward as it might seem... And hey, the best writers often write what they know, that's not really a new thing. The more you know something, the easier to write about it. Oh well, a lot of it is subjective anyway, so maybe? lol.

"Still a loner" - WTF? Batman was a loner and you can argue that bruce refused to 'settle down' but he NEVER EVER was a LONER. Not only that: his charisma and ability to make friends with other people were something that undeniably helped him with successful run on Wayne Industries.

You could argue that Batman wasn't always that much of a loner, that that aspect has only been more highlighted recently as opposed to what he was at the start. And let's not forget the amount of variability in anime/manga is probably the most of any entertainment form. The different types of characters, stories, emotions, fights, comedies, and just overall uniqueness far surpasses anything western media does. Hell, the things going on in this "high school" story are stupid american cliches that don't exist, they didn't decades ago and they still don't. yet they keep being implemented.If we take a love triangle for example, in a manga one of the main points about this form of a relationship is the competition between the 2 individuals fighting for the singular love interest. Many different scenarios occur(albeit eastern media has its own set of cliches) and there is dialogue, both internal and external, of the characters and how they feel and what they want. Western media mostly have this relationship portrayed as surface level with the competition being harmful to the characters instead of just individually competing for someone. There always has to be betrayal, hateful speech, or physical violence occurring, and at the end things rarely turn out ok, or no one learns anything unlike in anime/manga. I just really like the stories that exist in non-western entertainment over their counterpart.

@Minnion right, but the comic book industries arent the ones showing if the bad apples are being sold, they’re just showing “well they got sold to retailers didnt they, so its a win” and retailers are going “see here are the actual numbers of what did and didnt sell”. Trouble is, a good farmer wouldn’t smuggle in bad produce with good produce to supermarkets and expect people to buy them because they would get sick. Here's the one with the Catwoman YA novel, where it was the top selling graphic novel of May 2019: www.comicsbeat.com/sales-charts-dc-leads-may-graphic-novel-sales/ blog.comichron.com/2019/06/dceased-1-leads-may-2019-comics-orders.html Here's one that mentions Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass being #3 on the month of August's best selling Graphic Novels: www.comicsbeat.com/sales-chart-its-absolute-carnage-for-august-comics-sales/ March 2019 chart puts the Mera book as #10 of the top 500 graphic novels of March 2019: icv2.com/articles/markets/view/43078/top-500-graphic-novels-march-2019 Dear Justice League, which is a kid's book, was also in the top of July 2019's charts, with Raven by Kami Garcia being #18: icv2.com/articles/markets/view/43807/top-500-graphic-novels-july-2019 This one's more recent, but TWO Wonder Woman books, one for kids (Princess of the Amazons) and one for YAs (Warbringer), were in the top 10 of January 2020 charts despite Wonder Woman usually never doing this well and January being a bad start for the year: www.newsarama.com/49037-january-2020-comic-book-sales-charts.html blog.comichron.com/2020/02/wonder-woman-750-leads-january-comics.html Do I even have to mention the DC Superhero Girls books? Cause those sell A LOT, too. These books are made to sell to kids and early teens. They're made to get on that Reina Telgemeier or Kayla Miller audience, the main inspiration for the Ink and Zoom line of books. That's the kind of audience most of these books aim for, and I'm only posting the numbers that they share based on whatever Diamond distributes to LCS. I can't find what numbers they have from bookstore sales, so I can only assume they're doing well since they're making MORE. Idk if that Gotham High book is good or not, but there is a precedent or proof that these kinds of books sell really well or at least decent enough to continue making them. They have an audience that consistently buys them. Btw, clearances don't really help increase sales numbers all that much, at least not for comics and graphic novels. I've worked in retail stores and a friend of mine worked at a comic book for a while, so I know a thing or two about how clearances are done in stores. They're usually done to sell stuff that either DOESN'T sell and needs to be removed from the store to make way for other products... or to sell an excess of that product to make run for more of said product or for something else. They rarely, if ever, count the numbers of clearance sales in monthly charts since those tend to be up to the discretion of the store, not the companies that give them the product in the first place. They get more from the product selling at a normal price, than they do with a clearance sale.

I don’t think they even had a name for the original idea, because Bruce Timm and co. immediately decided that ‘Bruce Wayne as a teenager’ is a horrible idea that everyone would hate, but what do the creators of Batman: The Animated Series, a.k.a. The Best Superhero Cartoon of All Time know, right?

No offense, but are female comic writers unable to write stories that aren't centred around themselves? They don't seem to have much imagination.
@rougesnek24544 жыл бұрын
SJW comic writers and misogynistic men can't write stories that aren't centered around themselves. Heck, Webtoon and Hivesworks has better stories and art than whatever YA SJW crap the western comic industry is currently pulling up their ass. If you want to read a good comic written by a competent female writer and illustrated by an outstanding artist I recommend the comic Lackadaisy, especially if you're interested in historical fiction and into good characters.

Lets see..i'm Puerto Rican and Dominican woman, when i draw my characters, they are usually in a fantasy world, and i never insert myself in any of them, i give them their own things, it's not hard to write a character, we're all human beings, we all have the same struggles and goals, we're no different aside from skin color and ethnicity, we can use that and put them in characters, their goals, struggles, flaws, mental issues etc I can go ahead and redraw the characters as other characters and change the story, i'm not a professional artist, but it would be fun.

I always thought the idea behind these was to make YA novels with some Elseworlds-like version of the comics' characters. Like, it was DC's attempt at getting in the YA novel business. The fact that these things are actually comics is both baffling and lame. Who do they think is going to buy this? Girls are not going to buy this.

A few thoughts: 1) Batman is Asian based on a stereotype that the half or part Asian approves of. Money equals Asian in America...okay. Also, a little rabbit hole logic. If the author is progressive in politics, chances are a Chinese Bruce Wayne seems suspect with current sentiments with the country and how socialists approve of CCP government. 2) Everyone except the guy who is going to become a villain is ethnic. And looks like a 90s grunge kid...because that screams Joker. He was psychotic, not rebellious. He was an unfunny, awkward guy in life in most popular iteration. 3) The art sucks 4) Alfred being gay adds nothing to the story. The fact Bruce made his uncle his butler, his uncle pretty much sending him away after his parents died probably isn't the best image you want to give Asians, because the author thinks that is so important. 5) I doubt it mentions the Hong Kong protests and how China is bad. 6) Selena being from a poorer rich family just in order to have some relation to Bruce makes no sense. She was commoner if not poor, so giving her disipating wealth is just...I don't get it. Wouldn't she be feminist or bitter at her circumstances? Selena Kyle was also a seductress, she used men. I bet that changed entirely. 7) Why did they take away all of Thomas Wayne's (who also looked Asian) accomplishments? That was supposed to be something that grounded Bruce's perspective on wealth and looking after those less fortunate. They gave it to his wife, changed the iconic scenario of their death and none of it had even the slightest impact compared to what we all know. 8) It's fine if Dick Greyson is black, but why change his race? Why are he and Bruce the same age? Why give another rich kid a card to train how to fight when he has the means and money to do so already if being picked on? His parents would sue the school, so the whole scenario is unrealistic. Also, all Asians know Kung-Fu. 9) Jack pulled a crisp bill out of a dumpster because he has money-sensing abilities. He could sniff a quarter out of a cowpie. 10) New York Times Best-Sellers are only there because they follow some kind of trend on the market, not because they are good authors. Good authors adapt, not try and make a character a self-insert. Castlevania, this, and too many other Western adaptions of some property into another form end up disastrous in America. Is our ego this massive while touting individuality? It seems a subculture is forming from popular media because we are only seeing bitter, ego-drive, typically wealthy (ironically) young people enter these industries and ruin it. Or we get pervy old dudes trying to be cool conforming, then later getting caught for looking up naughty things, though pro-female. I'd love to say all of this is intentional, to destroy mediums of prior generations or just bombard young people with a particular view or mindset until it because the norm. Once it's a norm, it goes under the radar. In the other instance, we are seeing truly creative people pushed out the industry for whatever views for emotionally damaged of particular class or ideology hijack something they neither care for or know about. This author left out Batman's intelligence and determination, his real superpowers. Their view= "it's his money." They know nothing of Batman. Castlevania inserted eroticism and took pointers from Game of Thrones, not the IP itself though saying they were fans of the games (though admitting later knew nothing of the game they were adapting), then Marvel.....nuff said. Manga will reign supreme as long as this madness continues or comics are gone altogether aside indie.

BluMiu very concise, well written and spot on. American comics died in the 90’s. Manga has gotten better and better for the past 60 years. It is no contest story wise, art wise, concept wise. I’m glad even as an American I was privileged to be that early 2000’s generation that grew up on manga and not western comics. Only thing entertaining about western comics is the dumpster fire that is the industry.

@Tom The Fish Are you thinking of anime or manga? Anime is more popular in the West as many don't like to read or know how, but both mediums have been global. Western comics have never been huge outside of America, save perhaps Europe to some degree. You have a handful of superheroes many can recognize, while manga has produced successful shows, games, movies, merchandise, audio dramas and what else. Marvel and DC have only stepped up with movies the past decade, while the comic industry collapses. Manga i supported in its home country and abroad. If you simply don't like manga, that's your issue, but it clearly is superior because most mangaka care about what they create, not pushing agendas. They tell a variety of stories in many genre while the West only has superheroes.
@blumiu24264 жыл бұрын
@@codeninja100 What restrictions and obstacles do mangaka face compared to a Western industry that blocks anyone from entering because they don't have the same ideology or beliefs? That's one huge problem. The other problem existed since I was a teen and realized; Western comics stopped trying to be diverse in the things you mentioned. Even if they don't have the scope manga has in every day life to giant robots, it still was able to tell cohesive stories with their superheroes. I just think it finally came to a point where you can only do so much with the same characters, rehash the same story so much and have the same experienced and thoughtful writers behind it. Manga flourishes because you have different individuals putting their own work out, not a system in which a lot of different things have to be adhered to. Also as an artist, I enjoyed seeing different styles and genres explored compared to Western comics. I still like certain superheroes, yet you have to be clear what iteration of that character unlike in manga/anime, the character is consistent because they are respected.

I guess it might escalate into something more interesting later. I laughed when Selina says she's the girl next door. LOL Not hardly. A little too slick for that. I think the audiences like Joker to be cruel and dangerous so she's got a chance of building him up from scratch. She's hardly covering new ground with highlighting Bruce as a rich kid separated by wealth. Nothing surprising there.
