80% of the time. These little switches are what goes bad on the board. Its really cheap and easy just to replace them all. Its worth trying. There is nothing to lose. These parts are very cheap. It makes no sense to me to just throw them out. Take a little time and spend it trying to fix it. Thank You for watching. SUBSCRIBE If you would. Its always up to you of course.
PS Always know when ever any fixing is done hurts can come. Be your own care full person at what ever it is you do for your self in life. Your the only one that has that control.

If you are going to remove those transistors you might as well test them for shorts and forward / reverse conductivity. It's simple. I think you can detect shorts and open junctions while in the board. There is no sense in replacing good semiconductors and no sense in buying dozens of parts you don't need. It is unlikely many of the transistors failed at the same time. Protection circuits shut the thing down fast. I'm fairly certain you have enough parts in the small inverter to fix the larger one. If That Is Your Problem.One needs to know what failed to proceed logically. Those inverters suffer from cracked solder joints too.

the output stage of the 1750 inverter is the lower right set of 8 MOSFETs as your showing them. Mine had 2 that were damaged (component tester showed the bad MOSFET as 2 resistors in series) Not all are MOSFETs as the 8 next to those on the left are only 2 leg components. I tested them with a cheap $8 LCD 328 atmega component tester bought on ebay. Thing is awesome for $8. Desoldered all 8 and put them in the tester, all were the same MOSFET ID except the 2 that showed 2 resistors as the MOSFET was damaged. Delsoldering a triple leg is a bear, use a heat gun and heat them up and pull them out when they are ready. Same with installing them, use a heat gun.

A few days ago, my Power Bright 2300 short circuited when I plugged in a grinder and turned it on. I also had a small fan running fine on the other outlet. There was a "pop" in the outlet and started smoking. When I looked inside the inverter I could see burn marks on those "switches". I think I paid under $200 for it a few years ago. It would be an interesting project just to see if replacing those burned switches will get it working again but this might be a good time to upgrade.

The first components to look for and test look just like automotive fuses -they are- if the inverter has been connected to the battery the wrong way round then the fuses will blow, parts would cost sub $10.

they are called MOSFET you can get 10 for $3 on ebay. Check them with a multimeter first. Its easy but lookup how to test them since they are little hardware power switches. Also check if the fan is out first because that would cause the mosfets to fry 90% of the time

Read the manual for my Cobra CPI 1000 unit and it states in manual that there are no serviceable components inside the unit therefore do not open the unit in the event of failure. I guess they want you to send it in since there are 4-35W fuses easily reachable by just removing the bottom plate. My unit was working the last time I used it and upon taking out of storage the unit would not power up. I must have hooked the unit up with reverse polarity at some point and did not realize it because all four fuses were blown. Replaced fuses and all is well!

I would invest a bit of time working out how to test them first and diagnose the fault just in case something else has gone wrong. Someone mentioned using the diode tester to check them - try that and make sure you get a small voltage drop of like 0.3-0.4 one way and nothing the other way around (I think) and then there is another test but you just need to research that.. I think if you power the thing up and be very careful you can then measure the voltage across different legs of each transistor and compare all them together - you should be able to diagnose any issues that way I think...you dont need it inside the box at all for it to work.

@danielsimpkins9662
@danielsimpkins9662 9 жыл бұрын
+Jared Jeanotte That's quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard anybody say. You ALWAYS de-solder/remove the old fets, then install new ones. shorts, bad solder joints, etc, are always possible when you don't properly resolder. Not to mention, those fets are always connected to a heatsink, normally with a screw. You need to get the exact right measurement of height to get these to stay cool.
@jaredj631
@jaredj631 9 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Simpkins nope. That's great in theory but sometimes you need to get the job done. There is plenty of room in these inverters. Didn't see any uploads on your Chanel. Have you ever had one of these apart?

@danielsimpkins9662
@danielsimpkins9662 9 жыл бұрын
+Jared Jeanotte Yes I have. As for my KZbin, I don't use it to upload. So you won't see videos of me doing soldering, or anything else really. But yes, I've been in the soldering side of the tech world for about 10 years. Started off learning how to fix blown caps and resistors on old CRT style tv's, then went to computers, and have been fixing just about anything that comes into my shop. I get tv's, power inverters, lots of computers with blown caps, xbox 360 slims with bad fets, etc. And the first thing I can tell you about most fets, is that they get hot, and they get hot fast. Those power inverters normally either have the entire shell as a big heatsink, or they'll have a long bar style heatsink inside. I get lots of tv's that have bar style heatsinks ( big ol chunk basically of aluminum ). You really gotta do a proper resolder job on those, not just for the heat, but if you don't do a proper job, you'll end up with cold solder joints, dry solder joints, not enough wetting, not enough solder, etc. In the world of professional repair, there is no way but the right way. If I, as a consumer, were to take a piece of equipment into a shop to have it fixed, and got it back not properly fixed, I'd be furious. You might say " well this guy is just doing this for home repair ", and that might work for some home repair guys, but what if people are looking at these comments, and think they can apply for the professional world? How irresponsible is that? Come on dude, think before you type.

I find it interesting this cheap 24$ 400W inverter with 1000W-Peak has frequency adjustment. and voltage adjustment When I first got it. the voltage was ridiculously high. 130-145V!! Yikes!!! As well as the frequency being way too high. I adjusted it. Now you almost can't even tell its a modified sinewave inverter!!! Not even any buzzing coming from a 36W oscillating Table Fan with an AC Induction motor. And my hairclippers/trimmers runs on AC and works almost identically as if its plugged in the wall.. barely even sounds any different at all! The frequency now is almost dead set on 60hz. Tools used? A screwdriver and multimeter to test it.

Thinking out side box Do you think 0.29 to 0.30 is alright idle current draw? The fan is running continously so it would use less if the fan only ran by thermal sensor instead.. Could i possibly buy a internally thermally controlled fan. modify the thermistor and extend it with wires and thermal-glue it to a heatsink near the input side of the inverter? Very near or on top of the transistors if possible? Would that work alright?? To make the inverter silent under low or no load? and use less power too? The inverter output cuts out at 16v! but the fan keeps running ever faster.

I have a 300 watt unit which runs for about a second before blowing a fuse. Since I usually plug it into my vehicle's lighter plug, it blows the 15 amp fuse in the vehicle, not the single 30 amp fuse that's built in to the inverter; it's about 20 years old and just recently started doing this, it is designed to be plugged into a lighter socket for low power applications, so how I'm powering it is not the issue. It only has 8 of those Mosfets and no blown out caps
@MrDoingEverything
@MrDoingEverything 8 жыл бұрын
+Rangerman9404 Sounds like something has a short. Whether its the inverter or the vehicle. I,d try it out on a stand alone battery. I,d remove the wire and the lighter socket and use just wire. Putting the wire on the back side of the inverter in the right order and the other end of the wires to the battery in the right order. POS TO POS AND NEG TO NEG. See what happens then. If the inverter is bad. It will not work. Then you know where the problem is. If the problem is on the inside of the inverter. It only takes for one thing to go bad inside. Having only 8 mosfets does not matter. Hope this helped out.

Lightning is a static discharge. MOSFETs and IGBTs are extremely vulnerable to electrostatic discharge. Even a high potential without a discharge can damage them. They need to be shielded well if handling and you have to be grounded so you hold no residual static potential. However this isn't fool-proof.

@MrDoingEverything
@MrDoingEverything 6 жыл бұрын
Not with most inverters there may be some inverters that have adjustable voltage inputs. They do sell step down converters and step up converters. Meaning the output is adjustable to match what voltage is needed. So if input voltage is 36 it could be brought down to 24 volts.. Just have to make sure its able to handle the amperage. There are many sizes to pick from. Not sure what your trying to do and don't want to guess it out either. Solar power really needs to go into a battery storage then from the battery to the inverter. But again I don't know what you hoping to do. Just do some searches for them step up converter or step down converters you will see what they have for sale to use. TC

Cool video, Very informative - Those things that you refer to as "switches" are Transistors and some may also be diodes too. Be careful when you handle the large inverter circuit board and wear thick rubber gloves, As it has many capacitors soldered to it which store high power! (even when the inverter is dead and not powered up) - these capacitors pack a punch! and can give you a very nasty electric shock!! if you touch the back of the circuit board without knowing!

Its best to look up the number and find the spec's. Transformers have a incoming voltage on one side and a output voltage on the other end. There really is no way to know unless the transformer was taken apart and the wraps of wire were counted and then the math be done to decide the voltage input/output. Best to look towards the spec sheet. Much easyer. Functions of transformers are either stepping up voltage or stepping down voltage. Hope this helps TC : )

I'll do it if you send me one that needs repair, parts it needs for repair, and a shipping label to cover shipping it back to you. No but realistically with the price and build of those machines you'd be better off going to homedepot and getting a cobra 1000W for $99 and get 2 year protection plan for $12 that way you have something more reliable.

to the author of this video- these inverters are cheaply made in CHINA, and filled with IC's, those black rectangular components with many legs soldered in, that look like caterpillars with legs. assuming the transistors are bad, is a big mistake. those transistors are NOT CHEAP. they are $3 each and there can be 20-30 of them in there. so you spend $100 and it still does not work. the best thing to do is scrap it, and get a new one, and a better one.
@MrDoingEverything
@MrDoingEverything 8 жыл бұрын
I understand you. I have found the transistor to be much more cheaper then those prices. This same inverter I have here in the video is $500 dollars. So for my self spending a 100 or less with a little bit of work ahead is well worth it to me. To each there own for sure. Money saved is money earned. But again to each there own. Shopping around is where the best prices are found. Spending the time needed for the best price is much better to me. Then to just buy the first one's I see for sale. But again to each there own. Thanks for the tips also. Others will find it handy to know such info. I'm glad you posted some other issues these inverters can have to them. Much TKS to you. TC

Is it a 115V hobby/home machine? If so start with the basics, make sure it has the power it needs coming into it from the wall. Try to use a 20Amp outlet closest to the breaker panel and if you have to use extension cords use the size requirements/recommendations as a very minimal but its better to go bigger and to make sure the end of it ain't all whored out. If it dont plug up good replace the end of the ext cord with a new heavy duty end. If your using a value machine like HF or some off brand replace ground clamp, check that the wire is connected good at the machine. Also try buying the smallest short rods you can get local and do a little welding with it and see if your cables get unusually hot. Then after reading the show more on your comment if it's showing a small amount of AC it's no big deal but not having a lot of experiance repairing those types of machines I can't help to much espcially not knowing what kind it is but I would say look for chips that look like this (but will be a higher model probably, but I just happened to have that already open in a different browser tab. Could be a lot of stuff but I would look there first.

Man, if there is a way to test them while on the board that would be the way to go. All the time plus a$125.00 in parts makes it well worth the trouble to test them first. What you are doing is not diagnosing and repairing but parts replacing until the problem goes away. I would be mad as hell if an auto mechanic did that to my car and I'm having to pay for it all. What you are doing isn't too smart. If you can't determine which is bad then replace one and check. If that doesn't work replace the second and so on. You are throwing out the baby with the bath water. Personally, if I had no clue what I was doing, I would take a new one of those parts and solder on three extensions. Then I would power up the inverter. After the inverter is powered up I would manually connect at the base of the suspected failed part by simply touching the extended leads. I would go down the line until the inverter came on. Then I would replace that single part. Or better yet I would watch some of these YouBoob videos in which the electrician is using test equipment to diagnose the problem. Then I'd do what he demonstrates. I appreciate you trying to help people but random part replacing is not the way to do it.
@MrDoingEverything
@MrDoingEverything 7 жыл бұрын
Not the smartest way no agree. But you know what. The parts are cheap and what it takes to change them out is not hard either. Just some time is all. $125 in cost is for more then one inverter. So ya its better then watching tv. Plus I do this for my self only through out it all I get to learn some. So to me its the best way of doing it. Speaking for my self here only. What others figure is the best way is completely up to them for sure. Its all good. Ya not everyone can do things the way others may want them to for it to all make sense to there own happy understandings. We all have to cope is all pretty much is the way I see it anyway. We sure do all have opinions about all sorts of things. I hope all of our opinions work out for our self as we have them.

Who is not aiming to make money with what they know right. Well many things can sure appear like GR8 knowledge. But for some its pretty neat and cool. So maybe we should never allow our self's to become such pro's that it removes the fun from doing it. Which mostly was the reason to start with it all. Ya I like staying at beginning stages for a lot of things I involve my self with and allow it to still be fun. So what if things don't always turn out the perfect way we may have thought. SO what. Why not just find the bad or faulty part, the transistors/diodes might be o.k. it could be any of the other parts, maybe a 50 cent transistor or a bad cap in the control circuit. your going to a lot of work/ cost for something that might not work still. And all the heating of the board for no reason not good.

@dedskin1
@dedskin1 5 жыл бұрын
ITs exactly that , the only problem the power switch , is in the car , if there is no car , there is no switch , so nothing to turn it on, but it is ON i can tell you that , i hooked it up on 12V power supply and it is ON, it works , its not broken . There must be some kind of internal switch that acts like a Relay , that must be shorted , powering it up when its not switched on , so then its NPN transistor that is shorted inside , and without any positive input on Base , it turns on . Where would that be ? Im sure usual inverters have that just the same , in series with a Mechanical power Switch ? Right ? OR not .
@MrDoingEverything
@MrDoingEverything 5 жыл бұрын
Just use the old feeds and install a switch. It may have just turned on when the key was in run position. Should be easy enough to install a switch with the old feeds coming out. One of them feeds may need to run to a power source which the big POS cable feeding the power to the inverter would work.
