I had the pleasure of flying in an Air Canada DC8 from Montreal to Toronto in 1972. Such a magnificent classic airliner. I love the smoky engines.

Interesting comment! I had the pleasure of flying on an Air Canada DC-8-61 or DC-8-63 (super-stretched) from Montreal to Toronto in Sep 1971, and again on the same model from Winnipeg to Toronto in May 1973.

Richard Taylor I too love that classic plane and its smokey engines.

The opening description is not correct. The DC-8-63 in the video is not the aircraft that crashed in 1989. That was a leased US-registered DC-8-62 (N1809E), not a -63. The DC-8-62 was 30 feet shorter than the -63.

I ***love*** the shriek of the four turbojet engines spooling up. Nothing else like it. Don't know that I would ever want to fly in a civil airliner with turbojets, but the little boy in me gets all giddy when I see one of these videos. Thanks for posting!

The engines used on the DC-8 63 were Pratt and Whitney JT3-D TURBOFANS, not turbojets. OK, they were low bypass but they were equipped with fans. The earlier DC-8 10, 20s and 30s had JT3-C turbojets.

Amazing how far aviation has gone. Case in point, the thrust of ONE GE90 engine used to power a Boeing 777 is more than the 4 JT3Ds of the DC-8 combined!
@747heavyboeing32 жыл бұрын
Yet sound boring compared to JT3D engines. Still much more efficient as you pointed out.

I flew on this aircraft many times when it was leased to Monarch Airlines some 20+ years ago. It was plodding the holiday routes around Europe with a Surinamese crew (which came as a surprise to bucket and spade Brits). In those days it was in great condition (being maintained by KLM). My job was to do the accounts for the duty free and bar! I got stuck in Corfu (which was always an interesting landing especially if towards the sea) for two days due to a broken flap wheel - hard times!

I can recount that in Guyana for the first time in my life i saw that identical airline jet (DC8 series) arrived and took off lunch time period in 1989 once.
