Schiphol 1973

Film of activity at Amsterdam Schiphol airport in June 1973. In this pre-Airbus age Boeing and Douglas dominated. However a Fokker F27 and Caravelle also feature.

I started work for KLM in 1973 at Heathrow. I retired this year after 45 years with the company. This is a great film as I remember the actual KLM aircraft shown. Good to see a rare glimpse of the KLM 747 with the white colour scheme. Happy times remembered!

BloomingOnion Thanks for your good wishes. I don't know where those 45 years went to so quickly. I must say I am truly relishing my 'freedom' from shift work and early winter mornings. Luckily I am fit and healthy and loving spending so much more time with my wife and family. My grand children bring such joy. I feel blessed to be so happy with my life and I'd do it all again tomorrow, exactly the same.

This is a wonderful video for me! I worked for Finnair from 1972-1975 at Schiphol. Who knows, it could have been me working that DC8 flight. Wonderful to see the DC8-62 series. You can see it is a combi (combination passenger/freight) by the large cargo door at the front. When there were cargo pallets used, the air bridge was hooked up to the back door. Thanks!

Comments/jokes about van Zanten on every KLM video on KZbin is getting old. It was 40 years ago and no deaths on KLM flights since. In the top 10 of the world's safest airlines.

Nice video. Finnair DC-8 has a livery that contains year figures: Finnair 1923-1973. The year numbers were marked to fuselage (year 1973) to celebrate 50 years service. This was standard also in other Finnair aircraft that year.

Lovely..Schiphol has grown to a super airport indeed..those days of the KLM DC8 & DC9 are gone sadly..Schiphol was in its time a very sophisticated airport.
