Follow along with fiber artist Lesley Darling to learn about printing with leaves on fabric. This easy process can be done at home with any fabric on hand -- old shirts, sheets and more. It's great for project-based learning that includes biology, chemistry, landscape studies, and visual arts!
Tips for Teachers: Prints can be made with any leaves that fall after a storm, using any type of cheap or upcycled fabric from the store, making this project effectively no cost to teachers. String or rubber bands can be used to tie up the bundles.
A tip to keep student projects separately identifiable is to initial with a sharpie, tag with a separate color of string, have them uniquely mark with rubber bands, etc.
Bundles can be steamed in a crock pot or turkey roaster, or with a hot plate. Allow to cool next day for opening.
Check with your chemistry department for ferrous sulfate (iron), or purchase from a retailer to ensure you have enough for successful projects. Students should wear gloves during this step, or the instructor should do all of the iron dipping.
