A lot of people are worried about hard wiring because of possibly "frying" the decoder. You can now buy an 8pin female socket with wiring harness for about £3 or less. Once you have hard wired it you fit a blanking plug. That way you can check on DC that your wiring is correct. Gaugemaster sell a DCC 29 Decoder which you can then fit after first removing the blanking plug.

I have sooooo many locos that need hardwiring to DCC... I tend to cheat with my Lima Class 37s and 47s by swapping their bodies onto Hornby TTS locos (same moulding!). I usually hear the pinky-beige wire referred to as orange, so might depend on the decoder how bright that colour is! Yet another great video 👍🏻

Great guide. One thing to note is I’d recommend removing the capacitor from the loco as this can interfere with the chips operation and the chip itself replaced the capacitors function. Great vid though, I’ve subbed 👍

Hello. I'm new to this DCC game. After a loco is hard wired like this, can it still be powered by a DC controller on a traditional track ?

Hi 😀 Good question, I know hornby decoders can be used on traditional DC , might require a CV change though. Other decoders, might be worth searching or asking the manufacturer. I hope that helped 👍

Hi mcmetro, just about to get stuck into all this dcc stuff and do have a flying Scotsman that I would like to convert, but a couple of questions if I may? 1) I presume the addition was both the chip and the decoder? 2) are the front boogies very loose on your model? If so did you manage to firm them up

Hi 👋 1) All you need for the DCC installation is a decoder ( you may here the decoder referred as a ‘chip’ in mine and others’ videos however usually implied as the same ) 2) I haven’t used my Flying Scotsman in a short while however I don’t believe the front bogies are too loose - if you have an issue it may be worth contacting Hornby. Hope this helps!

@@cineman_ben2100 Hi Ben, The Flying Scotsman from a 2009 set should be identical to this, as this model has been reproduced identically for a few decades as far as I’m aware, so I’d expect everything to match up with my video from a few years ago. 🙂 Cheers
