Just started to run a campaign. Starting with the "Meet" in Grave Matters. 1/2 way thru and it is awesome so far. I highly recommend the campaign if you only have 2-3 players. All the adventures in the campaign seem set for =

Interesting. I ran a Lankhmar AD&D game in the late 90's/early 0's which was fun IF you didn't play a Wizard. The casting times were x10, so it made spells a tad ridiculous. Seems like DCC have made things more fun on the spell front with the old Black Magicians curses/taints on a milder level. Is there still the Black/White magic divide, or are they all as one?.
@Living4Crits

There's a split between white and black magic still. Nothing that makes one side more miserable to play than the other. And the casting times aren't an issue. But with spell stipulations you may need to ring a bell to cast your Magic Shield, or possibly wear a particular hat to cast a Charm Person. If anything it adds to the story without making it overly difficult.

@@Living4Crits Yes, I caught that on your review. Sounds like a typical Fritz Leiber move to me, so I like the sound of that. There's always a humorous angle somewhere. I'll investigate further. Thanks for the info.

So I finally bought this and it's absolutely awesome. I'm going to run a Sword and Sorcery campaign after my current game wraps up. Not using Clerics, but I am including the Healer class from MCC. The adventure Death Slaves of Eternity also has some great tips for reskinning the Non human classes for S&S games!
@Living4Crits
@Living4Crits 2 жыл бұрын
Interested to hear how the Healer class goes in your game. Given how easily PC's can still heal with Luck, it might throw that carousing economy off. Honestly, we never missed not having the Cleric around. I ended up running a long term DCC Lankhmar campaign after filming this video, and we're trying to cap it off with Greatest Thieves of Lankhmar some time in 2023!

My wife just got me this and Chained Coffin as a gift recently so your review got me really excited to play this. I am in the process of returning to Purple Planet by hacking in my 2E Dark Sun box which I have never played but I may be derailed after watching this. Im spoiled for options with DCC. Thanks for this and great review!

yah big fan of Lankhmar, in fact the first time I saw Lankhmar was in the Deities and Demigods 1st edition book which I bought in 1981, which had the Nehwonian mythos and at the time loved it very much. Then bought the 6 book series from Ace books with teh very excellent Jeff Jones covers. Yah and bought the TSR sourceobok on Lankhmar in 87, loved it , one of my most fave AD&D 2nd ed. sourcebooks , then later bought Moongose Publishing Lankhmar unleased and Nehwon sourceoboks, those were good. ALso have the savage worlds one its excellent, have yet to buy the DCC one.

Thank you for the clear review! I'm pretty new to the tabletop rpg experience and and want to get into running another game alongside 5e. DCC seems really fun, would you recommend sticking with core DCC to start or picking up Lankhmar. I like the implied simplicity of the 3 class system, removal of the dwarf/hafling/elf and cleric class, as well as the change-up of the luck system. I do however look forward to running a funnel adventure haha. Additional context being me and my players have no experience with the Lankhar source material.

It kinda depends on what you want your campaign to look like. DCC by itself can go a bit gonzo, which can be a good thing. DCC Lankhmar definitely pulls the style more towards what you'd read in the Lankhmar books. You really can't go wrong either way though!

oh yah forgot, to add, I also have and loved the marvel Epic comics of the bunch of Fafhrd Grey mouser stories by Mike Mignola in 1993. There is also a bunch of adaptations by HOward Chaykin DC which was mehhh.

I liked the video. First-time viewer and I don't normally go for tabletop stuff on youtube but you're a good presenter. My group and I are about to kick off a new campaign since we haven't been able to get together. First attempt at an online game so I figured I'd give Lankhmar a try. Got the Kickstarter but have hardly had a chance to even crack the box so it was nice to get your overview. Pretty frigging excited. I've been running a DCC campaign for about 3 years now. It's been a ton of fun, but we've got like 12 PC's and NPC's in the party (for 4 players) and reams of notes and the like so it would be... challenging to move over. Do you happen to have any suggestions for running a DCC game online? I've been lucky enough to have a solid face to face group for well over a decade so the online world is a little scary. I'm leaning towards using Roll 20 but mostly just theatre of the minding it. I don't tend to use a battlemat anyhow.

How hard would it be to translate this into an OSR campaign (Old School Essentials, say)?
@Living4Crits
@Living4Crits 4 жыл бұрын
The campaign design stuff wouldn't be too hard but a lot of the rules wouldn't translate directly. They'd be close, but I'd still run it with DCC.
