Probably one of my biggest regrets was never auditioning for any core. This woulda been my age out year. Sad.

First of all, where was the wink?! Second, could you actually do a serious video about drum corps audition prep? I am auditioning for the Bluecoats this year and I think it would be valuable to get some tips from somebody who's been there and excelled in the activity. This is even a video you could do while you're on tour if you get a chance, and it would come out just in time for the final stretch of first camp prep.

everything up until the microphone talk is all actual serious advice hahaha I can't speak for any other corps, but Bluecoats is very clear with what they want from you in the audition packet, just prepare the audition material, join the audition facebook pages. If you have any questions, the staff for the section you're auditioning for will answer the questions for you! They never really throw curve balls at you. REMEMBER! a big part of the audition is how you handle information, rather than how well you know the material. My first audition, i had a heavy (bad) Vibrato in all my playing and they told me to just do everything again without the vibrato, and i just did exactly that and they liked it. I was able to make the change without over thinking it. granted, it was an easy change, but that kind of flexibility is what will make you stand out over the others A few tips for practicing your audition materials: Make sure you practice to a metronome - start it out at a slow playable speed. I try to get things 7 times without mistakes before bumping the tempo up 5 - 10 clicks at a time. Do this until you can play it about 20 - 25 clicks above tempo. Practice long times. Look up cello drones on youtube, do a F remington to the drone. DCI is about being loud, but you can be loud by just blasting on your instrument, or you can be loud by being super in-tune and having physics of soundwaves make you loud and sound good. that's the approach Bluecoats takes, so they really harp on intonation. If you can't hear if you're in tune or not at an audition, that can really hurt you, so i would try to shy away from relying on a tuner and more with tuning to reference pitches Listen to some good players - I'm a euphonium player and can only recommend a handful of low brass players to you like Joe Alessi, Demondrae Thurman, David Childs, who have phenomenal sounds you should strive for. I sadly can't speak for tuba or trumpet, and i dont even know exactly if mellophones should aim for french horn or trumpet, because of the nature of the instrument. BUT yeah, make sure you're listening to players of your instrument and do your best to strive for that When you receive the bluecoats audition packet, it has the brass book they use for the entire summer, filled with a good amount of stuff. I personally hate reading music, so I just try to memorize that kind of stuff. memorizing it really shows that you know it, and you can focus more on other things rather than reading the music. Again, practice everything with a metronome. Even long times. Focus on a clean attack and turn around of the air and keeping the air consistent all the way to the release. AND my last tip of advice for when you go into the audition, is just play it how you play it. The audition wont give you a superhuman boost and you wont nail that piece of music you couldn't get leading up. Reversely, your body builds muscle memory, so do not overthink what you're playing. When you're practicing full runs of your music, isolate the areas you mess up and focus on those in practice until you don't mess up specific areas in yoru full runs. Practice how you perform and perform how you practice. THERES MY ACTUAL ADVICE ON AUDITIONING FOR DRUM CORPS but i just also subscribe to this method as far as working on any music There's more to it, but that's the basic run down I hope this helps!

Wow! Thanks a ton! For a little more background, I'll be auditioning on bari, but I'm a trombone player by trade (though I've been playing euph for about 6 years). I'm a freshman trombone major at the Oberlin Conservatory, so lots of these ideas I've kind of been doing already. I just got the audition packet last week and I've been working up a few exercises and I feel pretty good about following the directions so far. Tbh my biggest concerns are visually, because other than preseason with the Colts last year, I have no previous corps experience. A question about exercise: Obviously the Bluecoats have a super rigorous program, and corps in general is very physically demanding, but how necessary is it to have a super balanced workout regiment in the beginning? I'm a relatively healthy person and I stay pretty active, but I know nothing about creating an actual balanced routine, so running and biking and practicing my marching fundamentals/horn holds is all I really know how to do. Is that okay for now? Or is everyone else gonna show up to the first camp in really good shape and leave me in the dust? I'm currently about 5'7" 145-150 lbs with a decently muscled build if that helps. Thanks a ton for your help! I'm a huge fan of yours and We Are the Union (just downloaded my pre-order copy of Self Care and was listening to it last night) and tbh you're one of the reasons I want to march Bluecoats. Jagged Line was the first drum corps show I ever watched live and your Zomby Woof solo totally blew me away.

I'm confused on how this works. Does everyone live on "campus"? Is there housing or something or do the members have to be able to travel to rehearsals every day
