2010 was my favorite year of drum corps! So many incredible shows that year! Congrats on making it. So many super talented students choose not to audition every year because they create excuses or scenarios in their mind of why they shouldn’t go. This is a perfect example of shooting your shot and giving your best effort in your current situation. All students need to remember, there’s always a chance to make the corps you want to be, but there’s never a chance if you don’t try!

Come on now being a Marine you should understand why it worked. Commanders intent: make a team. Best way is to go to an audition camp, but through the precepts of maneuver warfare you arrived and found a better-way to accomplish that commanders intent and that was by sending out the tape. Mission accomplished.

Your audition tape was interesting. I auditioned for SCV wayyyyy back in the "80's. At that time Ralph Hardimon had talked to me on the phone and written a letter. It was my first DCI tryout. I was instructed to make a VHS (old school video) of any and every instrument I could play not to exceed 15 minutes. Needless to say I had no instructions, no direction, no help, and I didn't know anyone that had marched DCI. No internet or KZbin then either. He was super cool and nice about my audition but told me I needed DCI experience. I marched elsewhere and unfortunately didn't have the funds to march SCV or DCI again. However, I had members I marched with march SCV, BD, Cavies, and Cadets. So, your audition is not so weird just dated. Although I would have loved to know or see Scott Johnson's reaction. Thanks for sharing your videos and insight.

New Sub! Not having a completely perfect tape actually helped you most likely. Sending in a tape with a tik a couple of times when trying to "make it on" is realistic. Someone sending a tape that is absolutely perfect when they trying to impress enough the same I would have to ask myself how many times did they attempt this and re-watch before they had it good enough in their mind to send? Great channel! Your passion and enthusiasm is palpable! Fine job!

I played with Scott Johnson once after a Dci show. I think my dad was teaching at phantom regiment that year. I was 10 and i remember tapping him off and everyone around died laughing. I didn't know any better and really had no clue who he was until afterwards.. Gave me his sticks afterwards and told me I'll see you next year right?. Well I Ended up playing trumpet so I never marched drumline unfortunately. I was definitely a prodigy snare drummer when I was that age and younger lol. That same year I met the blue devil center snare and had a similar experience playing with him too. Got another pair of sticks and I actually kept in touch with him for awhile after that through email. Still have both pairs of sticks to this day even though I haven't played in well over a decade. Those memories will always be with me.

I'll be honest--I could never march tenors bro 😭 Like I can barely carry a snare for 4 hours, I wouldn't last 1 with tenors. Not to mention that I've gotten far too comfortable with traditional grip, it feels really uncomfortable to use matched grip. I'm really not even that good at snare, I need to learn flammed 16ths and a lot more rudiments. I'll probably be a lot better in a good 5 years, as long as I keep at it. Great video, by the way! You inspired me to do drumline, and I'm really glad that you're still actively posting!

My first year in Dutch Boy (1993) I didn't even get an audition. Al DiCroce came to my high-school and my band teacher pointed him my way. 1995 Oakland Crusaders, AL DiCroce came calling again. BUT, 1996 Phantom was the corps I did audition for...sent in an audio recording on a tape(not even a video). Actually got an invite to go to Rockford... Unfortunately, I had a mother who stopped my summer in its tracks so I could work the summer before going to VaTech... BUT, yes, I have sent in an audition...and no, not as awkward as yours

I'd say that's not bad at all. I went to Colts camp in 2001 as a snare audition. I knew I wasn't going to make it so I tried out on bass...which was the first time I'd ever even touched a bass drum. My little 5 min private audition was awful, but they saw technique potential and taught me how to be good at it, and it worked out great. Soooo, hey, whatever works!
