Big question for me is; Do Navigation and Routes actually work yet? It's very frustrating on an 830. 1) if you load a route, it offers to "navigate to start". If you pick yes, then it actually navigates you to seemingly the nearest waypoint anywhere on the route? Or maybe its that if the route it takes you on then touches the course at all, it flips to "route detected" and starts navigating you from the middle of the route. 2) If you start a route where the start and finish are the same place (a loop) and you start your ride, and maybe 500 meters in remember you forgot something in your car and go back, it now sees you are at the end and finishes your route. You have to restart the route to get navigation again. 3) If you have a route that crosses the same point multiple times (like a race that crosses the same water station a couple times by looping back to the same point) the navigation gets confused and will move you forward or backward in the overall route. In other words, if you have a 30mi route, and at 10mi and 20mi, you cross the same point, then when you get to the 20mi point in your ride, Garmin sometimes decides to start navigating you from the 10mi point instead. I basically haven't had a single successful navigation experience on my 830. Until Garmin makes basic nav work, and I can stop pulling my phone out of my jersey pocket to load Google Maps to see where I actually am, I don't think upgrading is going to be worth it.

Seeking advice here: i was looking for a 1040 and now i discovered that the 1050 was presented. I'm not a pro, i will use it for gravel/mtb (95% of the time gravel). I find the 1040 at 465€ delivered next week and the 1050 at 749.99€ delivered maybe in 3-5 week (minimum). Suggestion?

Honest question, what is the point of having the “best” display colors and resolution if it has a ton of glare when riding outdoors? I had an 1030 and the screen glare was a headache. Moved to Roam V2 and is just amazing to look at something with no glare.

Is it finally possible to associate a specific equipment (such as a bicycle or running shoes) to a specific activity so that you don’t have to keep changing equipment post ride when you do a MTB ride and your default bike is the road one?

Garmin needs to take advantage of the beautiful new screen and use colors in their data pages for power, grade, etc.

My 840S now seems obsolete. Still prefer the smaller form factor. Another solid review Ray 👍🏻@10:44 I see the two parallel red lines on the climb profile field. I see the same thing on my Edge 840S. What are those?

How can we tell if Garmin will keep on supporting this unit in the future (vs eg 1030)?

currently debating between 1040 and 1050. I value more the battery life instead of those various social features of 1050 that i definitely won't use. However I've read the 1050 has a better UI and it's making me wonder...Additionally to the fact that Gamin could start to "shut off" the edge 1040 developments. any tips please?

Did you also test the charging time? I wasn't able to hear/find in your review but would very curious to learn how long it takes to charge from 0 to 100%.

I see that you have the option on the 1050 of vocal alerts for navigation to be on the computer or you can change it to your phone. Will the vocal alerts be an option to your phone from the 1040 solar in a software update?

imagine riding in a fondo, and in a few years instead of the beeping we would all hear voices of starting segment, turn right, etc. Kind of like it and kind of hate it.
@saschapeter58827 ай бұрын
Is that really an issue, you can get the notification from ‚your‘ Garmin Varia quiet during a group ride, at least if you want to ride with that group more frequently. So I guess you can get the 1050 silent as well.
@gonzalezgaraypablo7 ай бұрын
@@saschapeter5882 Yes, I have all the notifications without the beep. But I was thinking in a few years ahead when all the Edge and Wahoo's will have this feature.

@@Dcrainmakerthank you for this tip. Watching this video, didn’t make me want a 1050, but it did convince me to upgrade my 530 to an 840. As I’ll need to save up for it anyway, I’ll hang on and get the 850, as long as they keep the dual touchscreen/buttons

Why is garmin not optimizing font data size so the entire data window is used ? And why do they write data labels like « heart rate» so big in each window instead of just using a customizable size symbol like ❤️ or unit km/h °C or % ?

I second this. On my 1030+ my kcal field showed nothing after passing into 5 digits. Presumably because the numbers did not fit.

I’m going to disagree on Karoo having the best Live segment screen. Needing reading glasses which aren’t ideal when riding, I simply can’t read the live segments screen, it’s all too small. I can see a yellow blob and white blobs on the segment graph, but I can’t tell what is what, and I can’t read how far behind or ahead I am. I think wahoo looks to be the most readable and is why I’m considering a new unit.

Regarding screen brightness, this is not a cell phone, you only look at your bike computer for a fraction of your ride duration. So, nice yes but not so important, plus it bumps up the price and decreases battery life.
@Maxwaehrens7 ай бұрын
High screen brightness is important if you want to be able to view the vivid colours of the display in bright sunlight. I guess it's the same argument you have on the Fenix 7 versus the Epix 2, you can go with the Fenix if you want long battery and do not care so much for a good looking display, or you take the Epix if you want a really dam good looking display and don't mind that you need to charge it more often.

Does the mapping/routing function on the connect website reflect the surface type going forward? When should we expect to see the new factions come to the 1040? My 1040(and I will assume the 1050) touch screen is absolutely terrible when my hands have been coated in sunscreen. Buttons would have been nice.

Does the hazard marking show-up in the activity's .fit file? I'm thinking about the usefulness of being able to send/export the gps file to trail maintenance folks to note the location of downed trees.
