very helpful for figuring out how to use these, especially in tws for multiple launches. also thanks for not editing out the misses, helps to understand how they work. better than watching something where they hit every shot and then when you try it yourself you wonder why it doesn't.

As noted the Phoenix was never designed to shoot someone in the back, it's sole mission was to prevent anyone from getting anywhere near the carrier. If they were flying away you wouldn't waste a shot on them.

In today's money a AIM-54 would cost just shy of 3 million per missile. DCS F-14B Tutorial 7... How to burn tax payers dollars. lol. Thanks for the tutorials, I've been less scared of flying in the back seat because of them.

This is the current state of the missile in open beta. I suspect that it's performance is bugged. Procedure demonstrated is correct though.

@@deephack The targets actually going cold as you can see from the LT/RT target aspect data line on the TID combined with the DLZ indicator on the velocity vector get longer (and thicker). The targets going cold were one of the reasons why you were losing tracks as well since they entered your MLC filter when they were transitioning from hot to cold. The other reason you were losing lock was due to your TWS scan volume not encompassing the target's altitude as seen by the altitude scan volume on the left of the TID. I'd suggest switching to TWS Auto prior to employing any missiles to ensure your track remains stable.

@@deephack According to Heatblur devs, current phoenix performance is consistent with their "new sources" and they have no intention of making further changes. Problem is that they seem to be cherry-picking their sources (trusting the ones claiming the crappiest performance). Publicly available documentation (several sources, actually) state that phoenixes were capable of mach 5, yet HB devs claim that this wasn't so, that real phoenixes could barely reach mach 4, at best. AFAIK, Heatblur devs haven't provided links to those new sources they're using, so we have to take their word for it. Anyway, it's silly that a missile which was factually reported to hit supersonic drones beyond 40nmi in several weapon tests (and subsonic ones beyond 100nmi) is so weak in DCS... even if launched at supersonic speed from 40k+ feet. Just a few hours ago I tried killing an orbiting AWACS by shooting from 50-60nmi, at 40k+ft while supersonic. I took the shots when the AWACS was starting to turn my way, so the phoenixes had time to reach it before it turned cold... but it was a pointless exercise, phoenixes just ran out of steam. Current phoenixes are lacking in acceleration and suffer exaggerated drag, seems to me.

The guy in this video launched it from 29.000 feet. If you want range, you go to 40.000+, idelly 50.000+. Like all other fighter jets, you have to employ your missiles from a good position and work to gain that position. By the way: If used from the appropriate starting speed and altitude, you will beat any dcs fighter that is not an F-15C in a regular BVR fight, you still outrange all other BVR missiles. This is mostly due to Pulse Doppler STT locks being immune to any lock breaking attempts by the enemy, whether its ECM, changing aspect, notching or chaff. Unless this is adressed by the developers, you still need no tactics to win fights, just start high and fast enough and start firing. All that is required of you is the minimal effort to learn your missile speeds and ranges.

This video should be sent as a bug report , nearly all missiles miss against slow moving bombers . Max range is 70 - 100 nm .

Make sure that you have mapped the pitch and roll axes in the "Adjust controls" menu.

That was just awful. Fired 8 Phoenix not a single hit. You should of been maximum speed 40 to 50 k and fired 15nm max. And if it doesn't work get higher and closer. Each time you fired at 20 miles it didn't work not even close let's fire again at 20 ow no it missed not even close let's fire again 20 I wonder whats going to happen this time

Stated range of the missile is 100nm maximum, as such I thought 20nm at angels 30 was reasonable for a demonstration. Procedure still stands even if my results were poor :-)
