This video is a little something to help anyone struggling with the Radar of the F-16 Viper. In this video we go over Bars Azimuths Range and SAM mode and we tie all the concepts together at the end. Please note that I don't claim to know it all, I'm simply sharing what I do know in hopes that it helps someone out there. I hope you enjoy the video Thanks so much for the support guys.

Awesome tutorial! One thing that seems to confuse a lot of players unfamiliar with radar is that the dish elevation is gimballed to the horizon, not your jets AOA. So if you are cruising at angels 20 and you get an AWACS call for a bandit at angles 10, pointing the nose of your jet down will not cause the radar to scan lower. You must move the dish to physically scan the lower altitude. I think radar elevation control is something a lot of players don't bother with because it seems too complicated so they think "I'll just point my jet at the target instead". It doesn't work that way for elevation.
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 5 жыл бұрын
Robert Curtis ur absolutely correct that is a common misconception among new guys, hopefully from this video they now have a better understanding of the radar elevation antenna and can make better use of the scan volume functions of the bars
@vadderkraft8563
@vadderkraft8563 5 жыл бұрын
So pointing the nose down, the Antenna will look to the horizon until its gimbal limits are reached?
@ben48831
@ben48831 5 жыл бұрын
@@vadderkraft8563 my understanding is that it's like a chicken. You move it around, twist it, turn it and it's head is always still. Like a gimballed camera that will always steady the camera so it does not move and mess up the shot. If your radar is scanning 10 degrees nose up and your are flying level your radar is scanning 10 degrees above the horizon level. If you point the nose 10 degrees down it is now scanning the horizon not where your nose is pointed because the radar was offset to 10 degrees up. Atleast this is my understanding of it, hopefully if im wrong someone will correct me.

Quick comment on the AIM-120 launched in Sam mode. The missile will not go mad dog, it will try to continue tracking the last target coordinates it recieved from the F-16 radar. But if you are firing while friendlies in furball (not recommended unless you're saving his butt), make sure you go STT and wait for pitbull...

Under the speed tape, HUD can show "A" (time to HPRF), "M" (time to MPRF), "T" (time to intercept) or "L" (time to termination; basically missile time of flight remaining). Pitbull is the moment when missile switches to MPRF so from A to M...

Hi @Growling Sidewinder, I always watch your BVR/DF videos and am fond with them, always a lot of fun and good time (and I also learned so much from them). But I didn't know you made instructional videos... and, MAN, you're f***ing good at doing them, too!!! This is one of the best explanation of a modern radar functionalities and usage I have ever seen since I am interested in military aviation, and I swear it's a long time. Extremely clear and precise, nothing missing (maybe, just for completeness' sake, you could have mentioned PRF and its relation with target aspect even if it's not in this early access, it's an important part of the puzzle) and also your voice tone and pace were simply perfect... easy to understand even for non native English speaking people. I really hope you'll make some more high quality instructional videos like this one in the future, they really deserve the time required for viewing. And I will add them all to my playlists of selected tutorials, they simply can't miss. Thanks a lot and keep up your fantastic work!!!

This is a great video and Its jogging my memory on a lot of the things I remember you explaining from the the F/A-18 Radar tutorial. I think what makes the Radar tricky is that it is designed to show information from a 3D area and convert it onto a 2D screen for the pilot. Keep up the great work man, I really appreciate your commitment to the community by making these videos. There are many others that have never been able to make videos explaining all the relevant information as you do!

Hi there, I think u might still be able to have some fun just means u might have to work a little harder there are sticks like the thrustmaster 16000m that have an axis on the bottom of the stick that u can use as a throttle control and it would be on ur left side. I recommend downloading DCS (it's free) and trying to use the su25 (also a free plane they give u to start) and see if you can make that work and if u enjoy it. Only then would I commit to more serious stuff I'm sorry I don't have more answers on this Im not too sure how difficult it will be to get into this with just 1 hand. But like I said try what's free first and then get into it with more money if u think u can make the experience fun.

I will eventually get around to learning how to fly it but I really do love the F15c. I have not done any campaign play. Just been doing pve multiplayer. Such a kick ass game. I love it! 22:50 OK, but HOW did you "push it down" exactly? How do you point the radar dish down/up? What is the control binding called?

In the f18 It's called either "radar pitch" or "antenna pitch". Dunno about the f-16

You can use the cursor to bump the range as well, moving it up the screen (or down)

Does choosing lesser and lesser bar scans limit how likely you are to set off RWRs you'd rather stay off of? Or is radiation so general that anyone forward of you is going to pick you up, even if your bar scans are chosen explicitly to avoid detecting them?

Yep, 60 each side for a total of 120. The Hornet's radar on the other hand goes 70 each side for a total of 140.

@@numbers111222 as moishy said yes its 60°, 30 on each side would be 60° total which is far too narrow youd be getting killed by guys coming in 70° off ur nose and you wouldnt even know it.

Moving the cursor around was beautiful and all, but what are the key bindings or dash buttons to do so? You explained how to move the antenna pitch up and down but you always oriented the radar cursor to the middle of the screen as well. So, how to move the cursor left and right? Does it matter if it is centered? Ty GS.
