Landing & Approach Tutorial in the F-5 for DCS.
The formula for landing in the F-5 to get your VApp is: 145 + 5(ammo) + (fuel remaining - 1000)/200 = ?
• DCS F-5 Approach & Lan... If you want the 360 Approach Only
I used the manual to perform the Normal 360 Landing Approach and also it can be found in Chucks DCS F-5 Guide.
CPU Specs:
Gigabyte Z97X-SLI
Intel i5-4690K
Nvidia GTX 1070
16GB DDR3 Ram
X-55 Stick

The indexer is for AoA and not speed. The goal is to actually match both, being at the right speed at the right AoA. Use the throttle to correct altitude and pitch to correct speed. You keep everything just like that until flare. Other than that, very cool video. Calm, clear, smooth. Keep up that good work :-)

You match both to make sure you are in the correct configuration for landing because, for example, if you only had half flap and not full, you could still be flying the correct angle of attack but your speed would be way too high (30 knots over) and you could run off the end of the runway and be unable to stop.

As a complete beginner in DCS i must say iv'e found your videos the most valuable. They shows the essentials without making a game that is tough to get into even tougher. However most of the dcs tutorials om KZbin are mostly "hard knowledge". By that i mean it's mostly tutorial in how to use the different interfaces of each aircraft. What would be really interesting would be to see how you fly the aircraft. How you approach it get the most out it. Something like that would be a valuable asset for a beginner. Thank you for the good content

Nice! You're reminding me that I haven't landed the F-5 on video yet. I'll have to practice your method first because usually I either collapse the gear or float until I'm out of runway.

Nice work. Wish my F-5 flew so steady, my trim is screwy, one click up and +1000ft/min. one click down -1000 ft/min. Very frustrating.

I thought it was 145+5 ammo then 1 knot for every lb of fuel OVER 1000. That's what I was taught. On the T-38, it's 155+ 1 kt for every pound over 1000... That's your "bug" speed to turn from perch to final. Also, the turn out of the break, put your outboard boot on the horizon (hard to do on DCS, just saying what I was taught). Left turn, means right boot on the horizon, reverse for right turn. Roll out, below 260 gear, trim and configure for bug speed and prep to turn off the perch. Your vid is great, keep 'em coming.

Yeah there's indeed another method in the -1, the one tricker uses is the one from the dcs manual, which I personally find a tad overcomplicated.

Excellent video brah! FYI, the 360 degree pattern is known as the overhead pattern. You fly up initial at 3500MSL (at Nellis), do your break turn and descend at the perch. If your in the VFR pattern “rectangular pattern” it’s 3000MSL (right below the overhead). On initial takeoff you don’t want to bust 3000MSL till past departure end, so you don’t smash into a Dude in the break. Didn’t mean to get queepy on you, everything else is spot on so might as well do the rest right too!

Very nice, Tricker! May I ask something? For some reason, my plane doesn't stay still in the horizontal axis and I find it very difficult to handle. Is there any way to somehow stabilize it? Maybe trim? What would you suggest?

Wait, you use 29.92 as altimeter pressure? thought you had to use QFE based alittude as 29.92 standard won't work on different altitudes?

Great vid man - one thing though, I thought on approach it was stick for airspeed, throttle for altitude?
@TrickerDCS
@TrickerDCS 6 жыл бұрын
Madbrood you can use either method... props are usually taught the way you described
@kaspar5441
@kaspar5441 6 жыл бұрын
This is just incorrect. In this case there is only one correct method and it's the one listed by madbrood. You can even see it in your video. Right before the threshold you degrease the power and keep the same AoA and it has no effect on your speed, but your sinkrate increases. Otherwise, great video. :)

Actually in real world aviation it’s neither, the saying goes “attitude+power=performance”, basically they go hand in hand, one control isn’t isolated to one part of performance. Given how accurate DCS’s physics are, I’d say it’s the same here.
@infotechsailor
@infotechsailor 5 жыл бұрын
I came just to comment same as man brood. Its pitch for air speed on approach, which you correctly described by noting the yellow arrow for high airspeed and the green circle as on speed. That is controlled by pitch on approach. While power is used to determine altitude . This can all be summed up by basically thinking of the plane as a helicopter when it is on approach with flaps in at the high angle of attack, the throttle is used to raise and lower the whole aircraft as pitch determines airspeed. Otherwise still good video lots of f5 tips and landing procedures

@@TrickerDCS This isn't about agreeing to disagree. There is no other option. You use throttle for altitude and stick for speed. If you want to make a tutorial, use and explain correct methods. Not one about your opinion. Or state clearly that you're making a tutorial about how to do things wrong and still survive.
@BorisJohnsonMayor

Do you just use trim to pitch as you approach the runway, or do you use stick to adjust level, and then trim for on speed AOA?
@TrickerDCS
@TrickerDCS 4 жыл бұрын
In the f5 I just trim, after i takeoff I start trimming down and when climbing I just use the trim to set my desired climb or descent. It's rare i touch the stick until I'm making a turn or dogfight
@6105boe

Isn't the increased speed due to the decreased drag as opposed to the increased lift you mentioned? Since...I don't know how to explain it in technical terms...but your lift body (and thrust vector) are not parallel to your movement vector when you change direction in any way as opposed to just going straight and level, thus making the body of your aircraft produce more drag while turning resulting in a loss in speed.
@TrickerDCS
@TrickerDCS 6 жыл бұрын
Dr4gonch4ser you’re right it’s do to drag as well as lift, appreciate the feedback

“Power for airspeed and elevator for pitch.” Exactly right. These two forces must always be balanced to achieve the desired flight path. You cannot change just one of these forces. The airplane is always trying to fly at the trimmed airspeed.

@@hdaviator9181 It is. And that's how it goes. But you don't sound half as cool saying that as when you invent some weird zen bullshit about the balance of control inputs to achieve the path to flying while being one with the force.

I hear that from other people as well but i don't recognize it myself. Now i use a logitech extreme 3d, but i don't that means a big difference here. My only issue is that the plane is always moving left, right, up and down, nervous as hell. Im guessing it's the wind, only the F-14 was stable from all the planes i've tried.
