DCS F-5 Air to Air Tutorial Part 1

This is an F-5 Air to Air tutorial on the way I usually fly the aircraft; part 2 will cover radar basics in the F-5. This is a video on how to employ the weapons as well as a troubleshooting guide to why you can't fire the AIM-9.

Nice tutorial, I liked the list of things that can prevent the firing of a missile, some of them are easy to overlook. Also nice, the the list of important things to bind on the Hotas.

Nice video thanks. Took me a while to realise that you have to pickle (hold the release button) for 2 seconds before the sidewinder is fired though.

Nice vid - hope you can cover some more stuff though, eg the RWR, especially now that I see/read too that ED still haven't fixed a several year bug in that it won't show up Tracks when in search mode, even though its clearly wrong - edit - never mind I see you covered it in your MultiplayerTips & Tricks video - however its still broke as per that vid and supposed to show them

you can have the other pylons armed aswell. If i carry rockets for example i arm all my pylons after takeoff and then just switch the rotary to rockets or back to switch between a/g a/a

as far as i know, it shoud work. but it could make problems if you use the dogfight modes to switch for missiles when you are still in rockets mode. Then the plane doesn't know if it should fire the missiles or the rockets as both pylon types are on and active

Nice Vid mate! I wanna ask You something if possible....I have problems with chaff/flare in the F5. My problem is that I found only one button mapped fot release chaff/flare and if I i push it it release only flare. How can be possible to switch from flare to chaff? Thank You.

Gabriele Ragano make sure both your switches are on below your left elbow, there's two switches, one for chaff and one for flare. You can also program them on your knee late, right shift k

Sure mate I checked, the problem is...having only one mapped key (I remeber....Q) and so the possibility to configure only one HOTAS button to release (as stated from the control panel) "chaff/flare release" how can I switch from one or other? There must be a switch.... In the Su-27 for example release chaff and release flare have two different key mapped and so the possibility to map two different button...but in the F5?

I had an issue on my first combat flight in the F-5. AIM-9s wouldn't fire if both AIM-9 pylons were selected. Had a long fight with a Hornet until he maneuver killed. Later got missiles to fire by only selecting one pylon. Is that a new thing since you made this video or am I doing something wrong?

@@TrickerDCS I figured it out. I can't fire if I'm using the missile uncage button. I think the external Saitek program for bindings doesn't like multiple commands talking over each other. So I'll have to set up my bindings through DCS directly for this plane. The missile switches thing was a coincidence.

Yogi Parashara look in your keybindings for missle uncage. The actual button is on the left throttle grip, left side.

I'm fairly certain that with your radar off that a/a1 or a/a2 doesn't do anything, it's just showing boresight.

Diesel7.3 Exactly ! Thanks you notice that too, you can shoot , joystick is hot in boresight mode anyway but not able to find your target before without a radar,

Got it backwards. A1/A2 is the gyro and computer functioning as a predictor sight with the reticle set a 1 time of flight distance (about 1000 meters in level flight). With the radar on AND locked, the radar feeds range data, and when the in range cue light comes on the sight is corrected and accurate for range and movement.

Dude you forgot to Put Radar on (and Set Radar range right beside your throttle) .in real combat you would not be able to engage target without Radar!
