DCS: F/A-18C Hornet - Track While Scan (TWS) Radar Mode

In the next Open Beta for the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet, we will be including the Track While Scan (TWS) acquisition radar mode. This is a powerful mode to create situational awareness, engage multiple targets at the same time with the AIM-120 AMRAAM, and break-out targets in close formation. It also integrates with the data link and IFF systems.
Important commands:
Undesignate button [S] = cycle L&S, swap L&S and DT2, and
TDC designate [ENTER] = set L&S or DT2, set AUTO/BIAS center

Maybe now it will start and feature a little more in the tourneys. Despite what some say, there's a huge advantage to flying fc3 in PvP situations, and this was reflected by 80% using f15/su27s. From not having to wait for radar sweeps, insta iff, ECM, and yes, spamramming. But as the f18 can carry 10 instead of 8, with additional couple 9x's in the tips, and a brilliant SA, if a team goes pure f18 - they will not be at such a disadvantage like in the past. Add in the HMD, Pitbull off the rails without a lock, I'd for one, take it to any fight, with the exception of the phoenix over totally flat terrain.

@@CameTo Agreed. The SA especially is the big kicker. The only real issue Ive run into with the Hornet is the damage model. If your hit by anything your aircraft turns into just a fuselage. Zero survive ability. Other than that I have no issues taking on anything in my Hornet. The key is to just not get hit lol.

It continues to boggle my mind every time I come to grips with a new level of sophistication that there seems to ALWAYS be another level of depth in this hardware. To imagine how much I didn't know 20 years ago when I got into simming compared to now, and yet there's more almost every month. These machines are just treasure troves. What's the point of the DD2? Isn't TWS supposed to be about being able to track and even engage multiple targets? What use is having 2 special targets defined by LNS and DD2? And what situation would there be where you'd need to swap them?

Imagine yourself as flight lead and a wingman, you have in front of you 2 hostile. You and your wingman both designate them as L&S and DT2, if one of you loose one of the contact before launch,you can easily swap using this method.

Etirion Mr Wagner personally told me last week when I questioned the drag values of the AMRAAM that they were in fact quite correct. He also mentioned that the ED engineers are working hard towards dispelling the myth that the drag is too high in a report that will be presented to the public sometime in the new year. I am praying that this is not the so called, “overview of the missiles,” that everyone has been talking about because if it is, then we will see no improvements.

The early access model definitely needs revision, overall there’s been a lot of high quality modules and features delivered recently. Nobody else is coming near to this level of fidelity, in flight combat sims, so at least the waits are worth it.

Mskull - the narrow modes on rws only centre scan. Baronz makes the point you can force the radar to scan a specific few degrees (anywhere along the 140' range) to try your luck at gaining a LTWS lock on a target, if you saw it on radar momentarily, or lining it up to an rwr source.

Wags, Just to be clear, Raid seems to be a radar operating mode that changes the radar scan area to focus on the L&S, The Expand function seems to just change the radar range and does not affect the radar scan area? Can you be more detailed on the functions of each?

Hello Matt, great video!! Im sorry this is so long! 🤣😁I absolutely love this game, and I have over 50 games in my steam alone- I'm 51yrs old. I've been playing games since the early 80s(on TRS-80, Atari 800xl, etc... I wish I had a way to message you directly! As I need a new updated video detailing setup out of the box, on the Logitech(not Saitek)- X56 Hotas, please...most videos are very outdated online, also while most videos are good, there are things these guys dont talk about, which is unhelpful to people who don't know what they need to setup to fly a basic plane(who may not understand exist setting up Hotas, which has clear advantage keyboards AMD mouse- is there default profiles built within the game so if there corrupted you can simply replace them? So it's been so frustrating, confusing and convoluted, as well as a little overwhelming- I can see why some people give up.... but I'm very persistent! Ive been a coach, mentor, trainer for specific sport for a living for 25+yrs! I would be happy to make some videos showing what I've done, if I knew where to start or how. But I havent done alot of video creations. I also had some ideas I wanted to bounce off you. About some other things you could offer to the gaming community for DCS, I think will help dcs in the future....longterm(I would die if this game ever disappeared as so many good games have) -I'm located in California! While I do have alot of gaming, computer building experience along with component level repair! Software and programming is a whole nother beast....My son just recently started playing, and I wanted to gift him the f35 raptor, because of what he does for a living(I know I will probably end up with at least 4 or modules).... I know based on what I've read and based on videos I've watched! I messaged you a couple days ago in another video- not sure if you remember-you commented back, but I didnt how to reapond!!🤣😂😂 Still ironing out my issues with Hotas(x56), I did work out an issue I found that was causing conflicts within the software....causing a common issue people are having- when moving the throttle in game- the joystick would go nuts(swinging from bottom right, to upper left,and the plane would go nowhere and make flying impossible- so people were just giving up! One of the other issues is that people will use the logitech software in conjunction with DcS when setting it up which is why I think there are issues, I/O, or port conflict within motherboards, due to available resources(playing thus game you are using alot of USB ports(so many poss. Issue- can go wrong here alone) , which when using all ports on a motherboard, that act with in the bios could shut other ports down, or cause conflicts with power, or other controllers issues etc ... What I found that it was going under the rudder listed on the f-18(game)- NOT Sim drop down under general, it was listed in there! I think newbs also need to know and understand the tabs for setup in more detail and they actually do! Like if you mouse over the wheel brake- It would give a clear description of what that it does, maybe highlighting where on the plane for example that is. Obviously, the example I'm using of the brake is pretty straight forward but to people who dont know about setting up say TDS! How do they know how important thai is just to fly? Again another exmaple....and there are more even harder for newbies to understand. X56 issue I was having, was because of the order the sticks were imported into the game, so the joystick rudder was conflicting with a profile already loaded in the f-18 game tab, by default, and of course not knowing this while I was attempting the setting up, based on my Hotas X56(Logitech), and the issues or videos with the x56 online currently! Hopefully someone can help. When I get a flight of bombers and fighter escorts, I am having trouble breaking the fighters out in TWS to engage. It's automatically selecting one of the fighter bombers (I can SEE the escorts flying slightly out of the bomber formation in the RAID view) as the L&S. I cant figure out how to select a new L&S in TWS mode once in RAID. I need to be able to get both of those fighters queued up or I am dead meat.

The radar seeker in the missile can only track out to about 10 nm. As such, anything further needs guidance from the aircraft's radar for a higher probability of kill.

Are you 100% sure padals swifel in the real plane? Iirc pedals in F-16 don't swivel and move like bicycle handle - contrary to most other planes. I may be wrong though.

​@@bazej1080 Frankly I don't know. 🤣 But then the toe breaks will be at a strange angle and be pretty different from every other aircraft in the world. I don't believe they are. As I've never been in an F-16, and the "other sim" doesn't have that animation at all, I could be wrong though. But I don't think so. Can't check my old ESCII/Italeri 1/12 model of they copy as well. as they're cast as one peace. You sure you understand what I mean? They pedals in DCS swivel, but the toe brakes do too. Look at it when you move the rudder. It looks ridiculous! Toe brakes should be going straight. I'm totally positive of it. I think the 3D artist just forgot, that's why I tried to be funny and made a joke of the seat animation, which they were so pleased of. 😉 If you look at the SLAW pedals which I intend to get, they do not behave this way. Maybe I'll pop a question to my buddy who used to fly'em.

It's funny you guys mention this as I thought the animation was wrong too and even posted something in their forums. I've worked on these jets for about 14 yrs and for the life of me I could not remember how the pedals moved. I knew that when we sat in the cockpit as a "break rider" we could adjust the pedal distance by pulling the adjustment lever on the lower center console and push the entire brake/steering mechanism forward (spring loaded back), kind of like adjusting the seat in your car but having the pedals move instead of the seat. That being said, I rarely pushed the rudder axis as it wasn't necessary. I can recall doing it but never thought too much about how the mechanism was actually working. Looking through my old photos of work I found one shot that shows that it is indeed pivoting in the center and the pedals rotate forward for brakes. I don't think the travel is as far as the sim is showing though. I think it is much less. Cheers guys!

The rudder "works as expected", and pivot around, but the toe breaks do too, while they should "pivot opposite of the brake bar", as in going straight. That's why I compare this to a bicycle handle. Rudders in airplane are a funny thing though... In a bicycle, a car, boat. You "push" with your right and you go left. This is natural. But in an aircraft, you push with your right foot, and you go right!!! 🤣

My thoughts were that when you press the rudder pedal forward it would travel in a linear motion(fore & aft) vs pivoting around the center axis. Upon looking at my photos the rudder assy does in fact pivot on a center axis. What I can't recall is if the pedals stay perpendicular to the longitudinal axis while they are pressed/rotated or are actually one solid bar that is portrayed in the sim. No, this is how it is done. If you want to engage a 3rd or more, you need to designate it to DT2 and then set as L&S. All the while keeping all engaged targets with the scan volume. Thanks

@@vladimirivanov303 no, it is not easier. you can shoot on L&S target without locking DT2. Meaning, you cycle L&S shoot, and cycle again. This makes it exactly the same as F16 where you have to hit TMS Right to cycle between targets before you shoot.

I can't get my radar to pick up on anything outside of 40km, how are you doing getting radar locks at 80km, esp in TWS? I always have them within radar elevation, even if it's on the fastest bar and az scan.. also, my radar in man still doesn't follow my curser in tws mode either, when is witch it just acts like RWS and scans the set az off the nose,

@@moritzheppler8242 Right now, donors identify every aircraft on the opposing coalition as hostile. It is not possible to have neutral bogeys. IRL there would be bogeys because aircraft do not meet rules of engagement (not hostile/lack of informaion/...).

@@TallyVisual well we've got the neutral faction coming soon, but I assume you mean neutral replies specifically on the opposing coalition. I thought the HAFU was just supposed to state IFF response, not incorporate any ROE concerns and the like.

So I can launch on more than two targets (say 4) by just changing the L&S and DT2 and all the missiles will receive guidance even if that are neither the current L&S or DT2 (just as long as they are in the scan volume)?

I have a problem when me or my wingman recognize bogey as hostile and hafu is turn red indicating hostile. If i then lost lock i can't no more lock again? I just see red hostile symbol in my radar but can't lock it again even i push depress or try to use undesignate button?!?

Only if the symbol is solid (not hollow) indicates that your radar also sees the contact. It should like you were seeing a donor-only contact. Thanks

From what I read the B variant is supposed to be more maneuverable and gets slightly less range than the C variant. I guess they developed the C variant for use with the F-22 Raptor and its internal weapons bays so they had to make the flight control fins smaller. (Not sure if that's the right term for the fins.)

He's doing a manual interrogation. Place the tdc over the target and assuming you're radar can see it, press "sensor select depress".
