I know this has been posted forever ago, but the offset you had from the airport wasn't due to the sea mode being trash, but because ED never gave the option on the F10 map to show the map angle required in a decimal point like the DISS-15 computer needs.

Any idea _how_ the Mi-8 converts magnetic heading to true heading?? Other multicrew aircraft from the period have some kind of "Variation Setting" control where the navigator can dial in the local variation. That latitude setting makes a continuous gradual adjustment to the gyro to compensate for the rotation of the earth - it's nothing to do with magnetic north.

It doesn't. You need to use magnetic heading as input. That MG/GC switch only controls the source of heading between magnetic compass and gyro. But the gyro is also taking data from the magnetic compass to align. I'm not very familiar with the differences between the two modes, but the Mi-8 does not know the magnetic deviation for sure. I think there might be a way to manually offset the gyro mode by the deviation angle, but you would need to know it and dial it in manually.
