I don't know who CPT Sweeny is as stated in this video at 12:56. The 926th TFW was an Air Force Reserve unit based at New Orleans Louisiana . His aircraft serial no. 770205 tail code: NO was named Chopper Popper after his kill and is on display at the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs Colorado

@@Anarchy_420 The first of these victorious engagements took place on Jun. 20, 1965, when a flight of Skyraiders from the Strike Squadron 25 (VA-25) Fist of the Fleet, took off from the USS Midway (CVA-41) supporting the rescue of a downed USAF pilot in the northwest corner of North Vietnam were attacked by a flight of MiG-17s. The two enemy jets launched missiles and fired with their cannons against the two A-1Hs, but both Skyraiders’ pilots, Lt. Charles W. Hartman III, flying A-1H Bu No 137523, radio call sign “Canasta 573,” and Lt. Clinton B. Johnson, flying A-1H Bu No 139768, call sign “Canasta 577,” evaded them before and maneuvered to shoot down one of the MiG's with their 20 mm cannons. The second victory of the propeller-driven Skyraider against a North Vietnamese MiG-17 jet fighter, took place on Oct. 9, 1966 and involved four A-1Hs launched from the deck of the USS Intrepid (CV-11) in the Gulf of Tonkin flying as “Papoose flight.” The flight was from the Strike Squadron 176 (VA-176) Thunderbolts and it was led by Lt. Cdr. Leo Cook, with Lt. Wiley as wingman, while the second section was led by Lt. Peter Russell with Lt. William T. Patton as wingman. It was during the RESCAP (the REScue Combat Air Patrol, a mission flown to protect the downed pilots from ground threats) flight, that the “Spads” (as the Skyraiders were dubbed by their pilots) were attacked by four MiG-17s. This engagement ended with one Fresco confirmed as being shot down, a second as probably shot down and a third heavily damaged. According to McCarthy, the MiG-17 kill was awarded to “Papoose 409,” the A-1H BuNo 137543, flown by Lt. Patton who, after having gained a position of advantage on one of the MiGs, opened fire with his four guns, hitting the tail section of the enemy jet. Patton followed the MiG which descended through the cloud deck and when Papoose 409 emerged from the clouds he spotted the enemy pilot’s parachute.

What happened inside of that chopper when it was hit can only be shown properly in the style of early 90s Japanese anime OVAs, bullets raining through the Hull punching fist size holes like passing through tissue paper, occasionally hitting the crew, shredding their bodies to gory splashes of formless meat and bone... like a scene right out of Akira or fist of the North star... sorry but the scene of that chopper dancing under impact of 1800 rounds per minute while going down in flames was really a terrifying display of fire power...

Period 1991, A-10s had only just begun to receive LASTE. None of those deployed to The Gulf had a weapon aiming computer, radar altimeter, autopilot, up front controller or CCIP mode. Only Maverick and (fixed cross) Guns symbology. Bombs were dropped TLAR. The most effective piece of 'targeting avionics' on the jet was the X18 Zeiss binoculars some pilots bought with their own money. This coupled to a mandatory threat floor of 12,000ft and a pair of gerbil exercise wheels for engines meant that all bombs were dumped on 'area targets' (Home Depot, 1&2, KMart) as soon as possible so that the serious business of hunting IRGC tank divisions and SCUDS could begin with a jet that wasn't weighted down with 3,000lbs of extraneous munitions so that mission area performance and persistence was maximized. CBU-59 was a decent weapon but had problems with delivery at high dive angles and speeds as the lack of spin fins meant the weapon tended to donut it's submunitions, rather than disperse them evenly over a target. The CBU-58 was better and the CBU-87 CEM the best option. But both weighed in the range of 800lbs vs. only about 460 for the Rockeye descendant. After the two initial helicopter shoot downs, the A-10 community began to treat helicopter kills as status markers and went trophy hunting. This confused self-identification with the Baron Manfred Von Richtofen led to the loss of 3 Hogs in a week. At which point, the A-10 was further restricted from low level attacks, with the exception of the Cajuns who were doing night OBAS in support of SOF looking for Al Hussein missile TEL teams. Only the most seasoned hog drivers got to go to the FOLs along the border for that mission while the excessive tasking of A-10s up north, in Iraq, resulted in a lack of frontline attrition as the F-16A/C of the time couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, from the inside, even with quad Mk.84. Not their fault really, they were all optimized to the USAFE mission for NATO which of course was threat driven to low levels and so simply didn't have the OFP HUDWAC tapes to support CCIP from above 10,000ft. Only 2 weeks before the start of Desert Saber (the ground war) this resulted in a flurry of catchup A-10 actions in Kuwait which, of course, led to more losses because the jets were coming too often and hanging around too long, becoming predictable to the Iraqis who called them 'The Black/Devil's Cross' and 'Death Vultures' because their Euro-1 paint job looked black against the brilliant blue sky. The Iraqis did everything they could to destroy them, bagging about 5 and grounding another 14 with damage too severe to be repaired, in theater. Of Note: appropriate and effective sand/taupe and white-green camos were trialed but not accepted as the USAF 'really wanted to kill the program'. Something which they nearly succeeded in doing as the A-10 had both the highest utilization and loss rate of the war. As carelessly as they were employed, we are lucky we didn't lose half the deployed units. A-10 pilots were furious to see F-16s doing 'their mission' while they headed north for the great SCUD Wombat Hunt. Today, the A-10 has gone through LASTE, NVIS, PE-1 and 2, IFFC and a couple others before a general reman to the C standard. The Airframe is finally about where it should be but still lacks the critical, dedicated, ATGW replacement for the AGM-65 Maverick. JAGM-F is there but nobody wants to pick it up and fund the Seek Eagle clearance onto the jet, lest it embarrass the 'both GBU-12 today!' Fat Amy Budget Vampires. This will be lethal in the next war as the AGM-65 is an 8km, X2, low carriage density, weapon while the AGM-179 is a 25km, X12 carriage, followon. Our LITENING 4 and ATP-XR Sniper targeting pods can see and sparkle from roughly twice as far as our primary powered tank killer weapons systems can reach.

Sigh. Okay your love of the A-10 is beyond the realm of realism to down right sycophancy with a statement trying to compare the F-16 to the A-10 as a fighter. Put those two up against each other in a fighter arena and you will find out REAL fast how well the A-10 can be a fighter. Hint: It would get it's ass handed to it every single time by a competent F-16 pilot. You also conveniently left out the fact that the F-16's primary mission during desert storm wasn't A-A but A-G. That means that other aircraft would have been assigned to cover the strike group from any air threats. Like the F-15. So even IF there had been any air threats the CAP group would have dealt with it not the strike group. This is assuming there would be any air threats as we all know sadam knew better than to take on the USAF or the Navy in the air and ran like a bitch. The only bad thing I can say about the A-10 is unfortunately it is quickly getting to the point where it isn't going to be a viable platform. There are just too many stand off weapons and high tech sensors that can be employed now without having to risk a pilot or an airframe to do GAU-8 closeness level of work. Never mind the amount of MANPADs and AAA out there now.

Actually, A-10 is not exactly one of my favorites. I mean, it's a cool plane. The comparison to the F-16 was more to illustrate how many factors really decide in war. This wasn't a suggestion that A-10 was a better fighter than F-16 (or equally as good as F-14 which tied its Desert Storm score 😁). People often look at performance on paper and think this must reflect the reality. But in reality, A-10s got two opportunities for air-to-air kills while F-16s got none. And who would have predicted that before the war?

If I had a Stinger I would shot that A-10 down

Even If you hit it, odds are it would simply fly away and land at its base. A-10's are meant to take a beating and deliver it.
