Errata: I knew this would happen ha ha! Larian came out with patch #1 about the same time as this video launched, where they've apparently patched the off-hand hand-crossbow not applying the -5 to hit penalty from Sharpshooter. I still stand by my assertion that dual wielding hand-crossbows is incredibly strong - yes, you can essentially replicate the bonus action hand-crossbow attack in D&D with the Crossbow Expert Feat, but in this game with no Custom Lineage or Variant Human options that only goes to level 12... saving yourself a feat is pretty huge :).

@ArcaneZippity Жыл бұрын
Murphy is kind of a jerk when it comes to stuff like that... :) On top of all the stuff you mentioned, there are a few other broken things that can be done beyond your list, ESPECIALLY when it comes to certain gear combo's... I was playing with a group yesterday, where someone was speed running to grab a certain combo of gear in Act 1 that allows someone to hit for a huge amount of damage from stealth on the initial attack, even more so if it Crits... One shotting some non-weak baddies... The problem I can foresee with some of these more broken combos and so forth, is that people may become too accustomed to their existence, knowing full well that at any time Larian may fix them or nerf them... And when that day comes, instead of just rolling with the change, they'll rage about it instead... The game is still early in the patching cycle, so I would definitely expect more fixes and nerfing as time goes on, and I personally have no qualms with it... We are in essence helping to play test all the content not accessible before, in Early Access... And knowing how power gamers can sometimes be, I fully expect build combos will be built that are going to be OP, and perhaps even broken OP... Things like Haste I don't mind, because in earlier versions of D&D it sort of worked this way anyhow... It was later versions of D&D that made it more restrictive... Plus it does have a downside once it wears off, and being a Concentration spell, it has the chance of being shut down prematurely... In earlier versions of D&D it was an AOE spell as well, but now it has target limits...

There are two further things: 1) Wizard dipping. A single level of wizard enables you to learn spell up to your maximum spellslot level. So my Tempest Sorcerer just became a Cleric 2, Wizard 2, Sorcerer 8, with 6th level spells. 2) Pact of Blade Deepened Pact: the extra attack you gain from the pact weapon adds to the normal extra attack you might have. So while a Paladin 5 / Fighter 5 or a Fighter 10 only has 2 attacks per action, a Lockadin 5/5 has 3.

One thing I noticed that is massively buffed is the divination wizard portent dice. You can use them on reaction (not using your reaction point so you can counterspell AND spend as many of these as you have). In 5e you have to use them before the roll. They also gave a means of getting more portent dice every short rest by fulfilling little goals. In 5e you get 2 dice per day. In BG3 you get 2 per day, until level 6 when you go up to 3 and can replenish each slot every short rest so up to 9 per day (12 with a bard). Being able to force failed saves against your hard cc, or give crits to your smiter AFTER they roll to see if they get one first is AMAZING. (At 10 you also get full uptime on both darkvision and see invis for no spell slots which is also buffed from tabletop.

Another one that isnt necessarily overpowered but significantly stronger in bg3 is the hunter ranger's volley. Instead of taking your whole action, it counts as one attack, so you can attack everyone in a decent sized area twice for free, more if you can get a bonus action attack like from war priest. Ranger spell conjure barrage also now adds your weapon's damage to the 2d8, including any modifiers like extra elemental damage from weapons or the +10 from sharpshooter and great weapon master which makes it so much better. I have another potential way to weaponize your movement! If you use Armor of Agathys you can run around to force opportunity attacks. It combines super well with the new Abjuration Wizard’s ward, a 10 Wizard/2 Warlock with armor of shadows invocation can infinitely cast mage armor, dispel it by putting on light armor, take that off and repeat to max their Ward for free out of battle (with maybe 3 shortcut buttons to make it quick and easy). Even crazier if warding bond is cast on them, since you’ll do your flat damage reduction after already halving it, and the person who’s sharing the warding bond only takes the amount you do after all that shielding. You upcast Armor of Agathys and run through enemies naked, purposefully taking opportunity attacks that’ll be hitting you for practically no damage, but countering them with cold damage.

Does it work when throwing spears as an attack in the game? Or is that not part of "throwing" objects?
@nokturnallex2160 Жыл бұрын
So the way Tavern Brawler is worded makes people think it's better than it actually is. For example, if you're a Dex Class, like monk normally is. You add your Dex Modifier to your Attack Rolls, with Tavern Brawler, it adds 1x your STR modifier to that attack roll. The reason it says "Twice" is only if your STR is higher than your DEX, as normally if your STR is higher than Dex, it uses your STR modifier for your attack rolls. So getting the Feat is actually just adding 1x your STR modifier to both your normal damage and attack rolls. It's still good, don't get me wrong, adding your STR modifier to both Attack and Damage is still good, just not as good as some people think it is. For example with 16 STR, Tavern Brawler is adding +3 dmg and +3 Attack, still good, but not like +6 and +6. Feel free to consult the Combat log to see how much dmg/attack Tavern brawler adds, it actually lists the Tavern Brawler bonus separately. It's definitely the feat that makes Monks a lot better though lol.

There's a fun mechanical thing you can do with Tavern Brawler if you're using the Weapon Masteries playtest and you can interpret the rules a certain way. Improvised weapons CAN be ruled to act as similar real weapons - a sledge hammer like a maul or a mining pick as a battle axe, for instance. If you're proficient with improvised weapons and pick some fun weapon masteries, you can use stuff in your environment in fun ways. Like, grab some horse tackle and use it as a flail for Sap. Or grab a chair and use it as a greatclub for push. It's like having a room full of options beyond "what damage die do I roll and which of three completely interchangeable damage types is it?" And you can switch between them and make cool, cinematic use of the battlefield.

It basically does more damage the more movement you can muster with things like momentum. This not even accounting for using haste potion. Kinda a silly weapon you can get very early in Act 1 but hard to truly weaponize til higher levels. There are also a lot of quality of life things I enjoy in BG3 that are also slightly exploitable, like being able to cast certain spells like Armor of Agythas and have it last all day, solving the precast this spell issue. This also extends to Hex and Hunters mark maintaining concentration until long rest and always able to reapply it after killing the first target. In a game where you've already got a million different exploits and ways to mess around, I found my Draconic Sorcerer more fun for the ways you can play with metamagic. But yeah Portent is INSANE on BG3. They somehow made one of the most popular "overpowered" builds into something that would make a DM TPK after 2 sessions.

Something i see people overlook is the Perilous Stakes from illithid powers, gives someone 2d8 healing at a cost of vulnerable to all damage that isn't immuny to, but what make it in my opnion broken is the fact that you can use it on a opponent and even on bosses. for example think about it use the illithid machine on githyanki so you can use illithid powers a bonus action. Bard college of swords/Rouge Thief + Helmet of Arcane Acuity + Haste potion 2 actions / 2 Bonus actions 1 bonus action - drink haste 2 bonus actions - Perilous stakes on boss 1 action - 2 bard inspirations to attack 4 times get arcane acuity, 4 hits it get capped at 7 arcane acuity (+7 to spell attacks and +7 to spells save dc) 2 actions - cast faerie fire (8+4(18 carisma)+3(8lv) or 4(lv9-12) prof+7 arcane acuity) = 22-23 spell dc to save agains Faerie Fire ------------------- in 1 turn you give advantage to all your team (if faerie fire worked) and vulnerability(perilous stakes) to the boss meaning the rest of your team will attack a boss with advantage and double damage for 3 turns(perilous stakes).

The "Warding Bond" spell has also been buffed. You can apply it to multiple party members at once with the same caster. You can make a fun build with barbarian for HP, rage and CON saving throws if you want to bless instead of rage depending on the encounter (you can cast Blade ward for some resistance instead). You need at least 3 cleric levels for warding bond (4 for ASI and 3rd second level spell slot). If you get 6 barbarian levels, you can get animal aspect stallion to get temp HP just by dashing, which you could get as a bonus action with 2 rogue levels. I'd love to see you making a build in a future video with this concept. :)

Even if you don't build around it, the extra bonus action on pure thief is amazing. They have bonus action sneak, disengage, dash, offhand attack, there is an early hunters bow that they can use that lets you cast hunters mark, and that is all bonus action. Crazy amount of bonus action things the thief can do by themselves.

Ok lets talk rules as written cloud of daggers A creature takes 4d4 slashing damage when it enters the spell’s area for the first time on (A) turn or starts (ITS) turn there. This is key so i argue that the first turn you cast CoD ontop of a creature it now has entered the effect on my turn and take 4d4. Then on the start of its turn takes another 4d4 if it was not moved out of the area by another creaure. This spell upcasts insanely well too. This reasoning applies to all spells that are worded this way

was going to write a short list of things that i found trying to recreate an old character to my best ability within BG3's limits, turned into a bit of a longer list then i thought: See invisibility lasts all day as well now. Which matters spell-economy wise as in 5e it would not last past a short rest. It also BREAKS invisibility for other characters to shoot them. (it being a save for enemies does kind of weaken it a little though as now you dont automatically see them) Acid splash no longer caps at "2 creatures within 5 feet of eachother" and is now legitimately an AOE cantrip (that also frequently breaks their concentration on invisibility if they succeed on their save against See Invisibility) so if they succeed their save against See Invis, I move the "pathfinding" around to see where it curves around the invisible enemy and acid-them to death. I have killed 4 enemies at once with this cantrip on multiple occasions. Detect Thoughts lacks verbal components (which means i dont miss the lack of Tasha Telepathy on my old PC) and can thus be freely casted mid-conversation. (it also lasts longer but its unlikely you'll find a second person with Detect Thoughts Utility scripting before you break concentration anyway) And an honorary mention: Create water is absolutely broken. So many things create aoe fire-effects on the ground that need dealing with and the games tracking of "wet" as a status condition breaks a certain act 1 bossfight to pieces in a way im 50-50 on if its Dev Intended or an Exploit. Also I suspect a late-game reward from an act 3 quest makes it an infinite partyheal between battles. But most brokenly: Lets have ourself a Ritual Caster Bonusround. because playing my Arcane Tricksters i realised exactly how badly it breaks spell-slot economy in this game. (also noteable helps that "ritual casting" is no longer a class feature, any caster can cast ritual spells as a ritual now) But the Ritual Caster feat is absolutely broken now, because it no longer restricts itself to first level spells to start with nor a school of choice, and they changed some key spells into riguals as well. So here's the highlights: - Speak With Dead is now a ritual. Probably intended to compensate for the slots that players would be wasting because of the plentyfull corpses that just say "it has nothing interesting to say" But my Trickster having access to it at all in a game that caps at lvl 12 is broken. - Disguise self is also a ritual now, and though you can no longer impersonate NPC's with it, being a ritual frees up my slots once more. - Longstrider also became a ritual and now lasts all day as well - Speak with animals works on some non-animals as well now (the big cat in the circus for example) - Turning Feather Fall from a reaction into a ritual has made it way stronger in its utility (as it can now cover the entire party at no resources expended irrespective of how many familiars and summons you have), but also nerfed it in the "OH NO, they shoved me down a pit again" sense. - Find Familiar no longer has consumed material components, and familiars can attack enemies now. This also means you can just send your familiar ahead to scout and get trap-stomped at without having to fork over 10 gold to your DM for every trap (trust me when i say cats can have WAY more then 9 lives in BG3) and now they can finish the job when the enemy hangs on with 1 hp from your attack.

Great Video. I am hoping for more. :D. I think a good example for a feature stronger in BG3 is the moon druid. The Owlbear is accessible pretty early and very strong. He can jump knock several enemies prone at once and the Wildshape HP scales with player level as well as having access to 3 attacks from Level 11 onwards like the fighter. The sabre tooth regenerates HP every turn and even out of combat Your druid can literally stay in sabre tooth form for several combat encounters with only one use of wild shape. Also the Bear has only one attack up until level 5 which also better for balancing.

I think one thing worth a mention is less of a mechanical change and more of a design change. The game can and does throw more enemies at you than most DMs want to manage, so anything with crowd control becomes radically more powerful. I think warlock in particular benefits from this because of hunger of hadar and repelling blast.

Another change/bug breaking action economy currently is that warlock’s pact of the blade extra attack at level 5 stacks with other extra attacks. So you can multiclass paladin 5 / fighter 5 and get 3 attacks per action, like a level 11 fighter but still keeping the goodies of warlock and paladin, such as single charisma attribute for everything, smites, auras, and oath powers. Extra attacks and single attribute are particularly powerful in BG3 since there are a lot of “add spell casting attribute to weapon attack” items and abilities.

Spirit guardian +sanctuary creates a potent combo of allowing massive damage, especially if you are highly outnumbered, by using the dash action to run by as many enemies as possible and you can't be attacked. It can make some of these fights trivial especially if your party is hiding and haven't been spotted.

im glad I watched this for the last one. I was really confused why everyone was recommending cloud of daggers in BG3 since it's not often used in tabletop if you don't have a ton of forced movement. The damage is assuming it only happens once a round, so it happening twice at the beginning makes it a lot stronger for sure.

Want to see something even more broken than Haste by itself ? Armor of the Sporekeeper is a chest piece you can buy during act 3 that gives a Spore Druid a new spell during Symbiotic Entity. That spell is a Cloud of Haste Spores. Walking through the cloud gives you haste for this turn, with NO lethargy at the end. That spell is a bonus action. You can cast it as many time as you want.

Another oddity in BG3 is that Great Weapon Master only requires a weapon held in two hands, not a heavy weapon. This means that monks are no longer locked out of it - they can pick up the feat and make it work with the standard-issue quarterstaff, still using dexterity to attack. Now consider that monks are allowed to flurry *before* using their action, so an open hand monk can potentially knock an enemy prone first, then smack the unfortunate victim with the GWM hits with advantage. Nice. There are also some versatile weapons with the finesse property. One of them, Phalar Aluve, is a guaranteed find in the underdark. This has some interesting implications- you can GWM with it, and you can also sneak attack with it. Great for a rogue-barbarian, although there seems to be an unfortunate bug that prevents sneak attacks that should be possible with the advantage provided by Reckless Attack.

First off, I think one powerful things is wizards can learn spells according to your total spellcasting lvl, rather than your wizard lvl. Letting you get all the wizard spells with a 1 lvl dip. So a tempest cleric/sorcerer can, with a 1 lvl dip in wizard, cast chain lightning, which it can use destructive wrath on, and twin it. Some of the conditions can be pretty broken, if you use them right. If you combine the helm of arcane acuity (which gives you +2 to your spell DC each time you make a weapon attack) with band of the mystic scoundrel (which lets you cast illusion or enchantment spells), and put that on a swords bard, you can pump up your spell save DC by +8 with two slashing attacks (yes it triggers off each shot), or +16 if you want to get lvls of fighter and use action surge. And illusion or enchantment spells just completely shut down the opponents if they land, like hypnotic pattern. All while doing massive damage. Also you This is basically turning every encounter

I already planned on using haste in this game, but after seeing the buffed version I can't stop using it (especially as a twinned spell, cast upon a PAM/GWM Paladin and a wizard who can cast as many leveled spells as they want in the same turn). I also watched a streamer's game as they found out the thief's feature gave them a whole additional bonus action to use their off hand sharpshooter hand crossbow with. Spirit guardians also quickly became a must have in every combat from Shadowheart, who just hits in melee/ casts sacred flame/ dashes every turn after casting SG.

Re: Static AoEs I have actually always ruled that the spells deal damage when they are created, as well as, in the case of Spirit Guardians, moving the field into an enemy for the first time on a turn. The whole " when the enemy enters the area" implies some agency on the part of the enemy, and I can see how people get that interpretation, but I have always read it as "when an enemy acquires Status: Within Spell Effect". That just seems like the more reasonable interpretation of the rule text.
@pedrogarcia8706 Жыл бұрын
yeah I don't think spirit guardians actually works any differently in bg3 vs 5e. When you move, and the spell effect that moves with you envelops an enemy, they've officially entered the area of effect. The spell doesn't say that have to move to enter it, just enter it. That part of the video confused me because in my mind that's exactly how spirit guardians works at the table. Cloud of daggers, yeah, that is some nice extra damage.

Love this video! I do expect at least some of this to change (especially since Polearm Master has the reverse problem with Great Weapon Master, getting the attack penalty but no damage bonus last I checked, although you can easily toggle that penalty off if you want to), but they are hilarious to play with now. The Spirit Guardians one is especially especially funny, because it weaponizes your Dash action in certain scenarios (why Sacred Flame if you can Dash and run past at least two new enemies?). One observation from early playing around with respec builds is that the Thief extra bonus action was easier to use with certain features than others. The Monk extra unarmed attack and the Polarm Master extra attack are new options enabled when you perform the triggering condition (action attack seems to be the trigger). They both seem to disappear after you use them, so they aren't available for that second bonus action (unlike off hand attacks or the Monk flurry of blows, which are always available). That said, although my character wasn't high enough level to fully confirm this, once you get Extra Attack, you can trigger the special attack to appear twice, and so you could use both bonus actions on it, as long as the sequence is action attack - bonus attack - action attack - bonus attack. I'm trying to remember if I verified this sequence worked with Action Surge or not (I am currently high enough level to do that), but alas, I don't recall. I'm halfway to level 8, though, so I'll soon be able to try out Extra Attack with a Thief subclass. Looking forward to it, and love that Larian gave us this level of respec freedom (even though it's definitely slowing down my progress through the game, because there is just so much I want to try out).

My level 6 Eldritch Knight Fighter now does weapon die + 10 + 2d4 damage every throw (plus whatever crushing damage from high ground), has incredible range, is incredibly accurate, and has a backup returning weapon if the returning pike decides to just lay on the ground after being thrown. A +13 to hit at level 6 is no joke and with high ground it's +15. Even while leveling after I got Tavern Brawler, I think the lowest percentage to hit I saw was 75% with an 18 strength.

Correction: For spells like moonbeam When a creature **(ENTERS)** the spell’s area for the **(FIRST)** time on **(A)** turn or starts its turn there, it is engulfed in ghostly flames that cause searing pain, and it must make a Constitution saving throw. It takes 2d10 radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. So let me break it down. A turn in 5e is each character's personal turn, meaning if you put moonbeam on a person, they take the damage that moment because they have entered the beam on **A** turn. Then they will start the turn in the beam, unless something moves them out. Though moving people in and out of Moon beam or Spirit Guardian does create a kill box. DM's often rule against this, but Sage Advice has openly states that's how it works.

One of my favorite changes to Baldur's Gate 3 is the great old one Patron for warlocks the fact that they replace the stupid telepathy thing with Mortal reminder that makes it so if you get a crit on any of your attacks it triggers a short-range area of effect frightened that the enemies have to save against is just fantastic it adds a lot of flavor and utility to even your basic cantrips if you manage to crit
@baklazan777 Жыл бұрын
Here's another OP thing(mild ITEM spoilers ahead) - lightning charges on spells(like from a staff you can get in act 1) - or at least what the damage from them can proc. For example hex - your +1 lightning damage turns to +1d6+1 damage on every application, that's nice for early level, but that's not OP. What is OP is that as a sorcerer, the feat that adds your spellcasting to the damage of certain elemental type counts there too. Oh and any items(there are 3 in the game) that add your spellcasting/charisma to cantrips? Those also work and they stack. So, as I mentioned there are 3 items and you can get to 24 charisma easily in the game, that means: +7 x 4 = 28 damage to cantrip x2 because it applies to lightning charge x2 because throw water on them and make them vulnerable to lightning damage +1 from the charge itself, x2 as well for vuln = 114 added, guaranteed damage Oh but I forgot to mention, if you have 5 lightning charges, the damage turns from 1 to 1d8 and since there's an easy way to get a guaranteed crit let's count it with Shocking Grasp at lvl 12 which is 4d8 x2 because of crit = 8d8 for an average of 36 damage, doubled for crit so 72 average. So a total of 184(removed 2 since the +1 damage from the charge doesn't apply here) damage on average with a cantrip That's pretty strong... but it's not over because if you have 6 lightning charges this weird thing happens where both the +1 damage and +1d8 damage applies and yes, they do add all the bonuses as well so that means another 28 damage from your charisma(x4) and it's double for vuln so 56 so on average you do 242 damage. With a cantrip. This also applies other item effects that proc damage, like a certain item that adds 1d8 damage(I don't want to spoil the item, it's very fun) and that's of course double for crit and applies 3 times so 6d8, which is also lightning so x2 which comes to another average of 54 damage. Mind you without the lightning charge bug this would still come out to an avergae of 146 damage with vuln I love this game and how they just let you completely break the balance 🤣

Heh.. fast-hands. I mean, sure there's the Attack+BA(off-hand)+BA(off-hand), but even the other Cunning Actions can be super useful "Oh, they're too far away? How about Move + Dash + Dash. Am I in range for my Action now?" "Oh, an enemy revealed me?, How about I move over here and Hide, then Snipe.. then Hide again.. and maybe move some more. Yeah, good luck find Astarion now." I'm surprised this video didn't mention Jump and Shove. Jump in 5e is "Oh, your Barbarian took a 10' run up.. can clear a 4' low wall". In BG3, it's "Oh, you're a mage. Clear a 10' high wall and the 20' pit on the other side." And Shove... in 5e, you basically need to build for shoving people around. Like.. take the crusher feat, or be a monk or something, and you might be able to push some 10 feet away from you. In BG3 shoving is a BA, and it's just so easy. Enemies flying off convenient precipices all over the place.
