This is way more work than I ever imagined. PCB's are one of those invisible things that get taken for granted by most. I certainly took them for granted until seeing the vast engineering, scientific, and industrial effort that went into making this possible. Truly remarkable!

I worked at a PCB manufacturing facility in Texas in 1980: we did all this by hand. Interesting to see the process automated to this degree. We charges $1.00 per board to guarantee the board was without flaws and companies readily paid the extra money.

@Srirama Murthi, i am sure the military doenst order PCBs from china since they have enough money for inhouse prototyping or more expensive local services. Second, if you can afford a Patent you can also buy a CNC PCB engraver from china or you could even DIY build it. There are many tutorials for CNC builds from the wooden to high end steel . Btw even the crappiest is useful and a good learning exercise. Also for PCBs you still have the option for Tonertransfer+Etching when CNC is too difficult for you.

What a great video on the PCB development process. I have often wondered how they can make boards so cheaply when many PCB orders are for small quantities. I know combining multiple orders into one package helps, but that is still amazing considering all the specialized equipment needed. Sadly my other thought is how are they treating all that contaminated water after it been used for PCB manufacturing. I know here in California that was a major concern and one of the reasons PCB manufacturing went overseas. I hope all those young people are protecting themselves.

Most of the video is correct. I did hear one mistake at 2:25. It says "this is an air DRIVEN drill". I have been in the PCB drilling business since 1980 - as a field service engineer and as an applications engineer. High speed spindles use air bearings but they are driven by 3 phase electrical power. The frequency and amplitude of the power is varied to control speed and acceleration of the spindle.
@meepk633
@meepk633 5 жыл бұрын
Are you sure, man? Look at the size of the air line.
@GregSr
@GregSr 5 жыл бұрын
@@meepk633 Yep - I'm 100% sure. The air is used for the non-contact bearings and for opening and closing the collet. The spindle shaft is completely suspended in air because conventional ball bearings would burn up. I have worked with spindles that spin as fast as 180,000 RPM (3,000 revolutions per SECOND!). The RPM is precisely controlled by the computer (using "closed loop" feedback). The spindle can go from 0 RPM to full speed in about 6 seconds. The extreme speeds are needed for using drill bits down to 0.002" diameter - that's about half the diameter of a human hair. All speed and almost no torque!

We made those circuit boards here in the USA starting in 1974. Richmond Works under AT&T. We were the largest PWB maker in the world. I see many of the same machines here that we used at my old plant. We invented the whole process. Then NAFTA happened (thank you Washington) nearly 3,000 people lost their jobs. I and 9 other people were given the job along with the maintenance crew of packing everything up in 2001 and shipping it all to china along with many copies of the AT&T Unix Operating System. I could take you through that plant and explain every operation in detail. It appears that many of those machines I was the Supervisor or Department head for the operations.

Unfortunately this is what “trickle down economics” really is. It’s the economics of the cheapest nation. The issue is that anything we do here in the USA can be done cheaper in an economy that doesn’t pay its staff as much. This is also due to staff being plentiful!! China produces quite a lot of good stuff but they are still learning. We need to be very careful what knowledge we share. Trade secrets should be kept as secrets and not published in patents !!!

Wow, I didn’t think that these very cheap but also essential electrical building part has these many production steps. Economy of scale plays an important role here. But I wonder whether a few steps can be combined.

From my experience working in the field this is simple production. You should see what goes into real high tech boards.. Work can be done in hundreds of stations. Processes should not be combined to insure best quality..

What is shown in this video is low volume (a few pieces to a few hundred pieces) production for pilot production or low volume custom board for hobbyists item. For high volume production the flow is much more stream line and automated for speed, eliminate human error and increase precision.

@@vlonevlone2319 There are plenty of democracies with low labour costs. It comes down to how little money a person is willing to work for. In China that amount is very low indeed. In America, unskilled/low skill workers are wonderfully overpaid and protected by their government. If countries with overpaid labour opened their borders the situation would change in a hot minute.

In fact, if you come to China, there are very few facilities like video. Most factories use a lot of manpower. We are exporting cheaply due to low cost and large number of manpower.

Damn first time I've seen this type of pcb production. I've seen small scale, home made boards but the looks amazing. The copper that's etched is captured somehow? Seems like a lot of waste. I'm guessing it's used for electrolysis at another part? I'd love to see how military grade ceramic boards are made.

How they assign the board to the correct customer at the end? I am surprised that layer aligning is done manually and checked by a naked eye.

In the 1980'ies, I worked with repairing answering machines. The PCB quality was so bad that it is impossible to compare with these Chinese things. Made from phenolic paper - the pads sometimes were loose on new machines. Since they were one sided, there were a lot of jumpers, and since they were made in Taiwan, the climate made them corrode, so many of the joints were faulty, or became "inoperable" within a couple of months. When a customer brought a faulty device to me, I dismantled it as if it was a bomb - I didn't want to provoke those faulty joints to re-establish momentary connection before I had a chance to make any measurements to figure out the cause of the malicious behavior. But most of the time, the machine won. That is, the jumper or whatever it was, decided to transmit electrons again before I found the cause of the misbehavior. So I never felt I had a chance to do my work properly. Usually i said "Can't find anything wrong with it " to the customer, who immediately made fierce objections. Those were the days.
