Superb historical drama. Though fictionalized, the imaginative script is based on historical fact. Desiree did live, was Napoleon's first love, and eventually became queen of Sweden. The House of Bernadotte still reigns there. The acting is pitch-perfect. So is the script. The women's gowns are gorgeous.

I find myself interested in history when caught up in the story line and remember some of what I was taught. But I wonder at how much liberty is stretched for the entertainment purposes. I found hilarious from the director to have the lady teaching him waltz. I saw him in the Godfather dancing with Conney at her wedding, he was passed 70 then and yet ....this was the golden seal on his identity. I've had a commercial copy of this film for many years. The Guys & Dolls pair comprising Jean Simmons and Marlon Brando have been my faves since I was a child. Bold, impish and daring that's what Ms. Simmons character was all about. There is pathos in her performance which she never lets slide into sentimentality. Jean excelled in a long-line of these Historical/Biblical films that included Androcles & the Lion, Young Bess, The Robe, The Egyptian. Jean never judged a role, but embraced it with all its contradictions, all its darkness and for what, ultimately, made it human. Just watch those mischievous eyes of hers, those limpid pools of darkness: how they dart about and convey a myriad of expressions . On Mr. Brando, i have already penned reams on his performances and superlative talent. And, here again, he does not disappoint!

@@user-vt4hd8hb4v This film is based on a very good historical novel by Anne-Marie Selenko. She did much sound research before writing her post - WW II international bestseller. The only really irritating wrong detail of the film was that they depicted Napoleon's brilliant Foreign Minister Prince Talleyrand as able to dance in the 1814 New Year's Ball scene -- "The Lame Devil" was born with a club- foot, wore an iron brace on his lower right leg, and was unable to stand long without leaning on his cane or a piece of furniture.

How did she hear about where Napoleon would be on the day she arrived? How would she know how to get there? Why didn't she know who Josephine was? Why did her brother allow her to travel all that way unaccompanied? How did Bernadotte know where to find her after she fled Mme Tallien's party? Despite these questions, the film was extremely enjoyable.

Excelllent film. Marlon Brando IS Napoleon. Jean Simmons insipid. Historically accurate. Thanks 😊

Was disappointed at how Ridley Scott interpreted his version of this iconic man. Marlon Brando exuded genius & charisma, unlike Phoenix. Nevertheless, the art production, costumes, scenery, locations in (English) palaces were authentic & magnificent.

@@cindymaceda2999Joaquin Phoenix is good actor but his acting is so lifeless and disappointing in Napoleon

I love this movie. I watched it many times. Brando is a superb Napoleon. I refused to watch Phoenix’s Napoleon because Ridley Scott is a clown and I knew his movie was going to be trash.

Riley Scott aged quite bad, like a cheap vinager.
