Quick question please? I see lots of tutorials for Docker/Pods on TrueNAS, and they usually put in their NAS IP, when using this, would I be able to put the ddns address instead so I could say use nginx pm to manage multiple home hosts?

Your IP on the TrueNAS will not change. The TrueNAS service is updating your dyndns provider the IP that goes to your Router in your home from the outside.so when you type in the url of your dyndns service, it will give the IP to your house network, you will then need to tell your home router to forward traffic from.outside to I side depending on the port. Sometimes ISP's are also on a private network and you may need to request a public ip from them. Usually on your router from the isp will have a setting like public ip and you can see if that is a private domain ip.

Ping is usually blocked by your home router.

Hello, thx for the tutorial. Im trying to setup a VPN to access the TrueNAS remotely. I was able to make a dnsexit account, and linked it with the TrueNAS system. After starting the Dynamic DNS service, the IP in dnsExit also updated. When i ping my DNS from my home network i get response, but when i try to do it from other networks, it says that the "Request timed out" 4 times. I did portforward port 80 of the TrueNAS to port 80 as UDP and TCP and port 443 to port 8088 again as UDP and as TCP. Any ideas how to fix this?

Many ISP will block ping to end user ip's and also block port 80 on the public side.

443 for the gui as it should load in https. On yhe public side if you are forwarding an different port you will need to specify it like example.com:444

I would not recommend it without a VPN. There are too many vulnerabilities in the protocols used like smb.

Hello good guys, I can't get it to work, I can connect to the link generated with duckdns but once I connect outside my house the truenas never loads, it only works when I'm on the same network as the thunderstorm. Any idea how to fix it?

do you have a public IP from your ISP? sometimes the ISP provides private IP's to the end users. Also is your Router port forwarding the correct ports (443,80) from the internet to your internal network to the truenas ?

In your router, you will port forward TO your trunas ip and port. So any traffic coming from the internet on the incoming port will get directed to the truenas internal (private) ip of the truenas.

the username and passsword is your username and password of truenas or dns exit ? Antother cuestion, how did you configure the port forwarding for this video ?

The passwords you are entering into the TrueNAS when configuring DDNS is going to be for the DNSExit account. You should not need your TrueNAS passwords for anything other than logging into your TrueNAS to configure this. For port forwarding you will need to log into your home router and navigate to the port forwarding section, and port forward the ports you want. Usually 1 to 1, for example for transmission to you need port 9091. So you put inbound port 9091, outbound port 9091 and the machine ip that transmission is running on, ( probably your truenas).

​@@TechworksOnline I must be having trouble with the ports in router. I did every step and opened the correct ports and still won't work. After I follow every step i the video I can't log into my truenas web ui using my new domain name. I get an error code in truenas (local dhclient 1219 - - unknown dhcp option value 0x7d) I currently have ports 20-22,80,443,837,8088,9091 open in port forwarding. When I reboot my Truenas after it says this error it then changes from ip ending in 152 to ending in 151. So it changes to fix the error because it stops working to enter web ui but then goes back to working with new ip after I reboot the system.

I have followed 100% but my A record will not update. I have tried 3 different other free dns providers as well with no luck. Is there someone where I can go to see if a log of me turning the Dynamic DNS on to see if there is an error I can't see?

Your ISP might be a private network. You might need to request a public IP from them

@@TechworksOnline I was able to get the dynamicDNS working. I was placing the full domain in the domain spot. When I just added the free subdomain I was able to use the url. The dumb thing is I can only access truenas login at the url when I am on my network.
