Once again Marketplace was not the solution I needed it to be. We picked up this motor from some great folks in town- unfortunately it leaves a little (okay a lot) to be desired. It's not quite as together as we had hoped. But all that really matters is Can We Get It Running?

We had a 1984 Pontiac grand prix and the starter bolt broke and because we were broke and had to get to work we would park on a curb to shove 2 cassette tapes in between the starter and block to start it and we did this for one week until we got paid.

Once I borrowed my brother-in-law's truck, he said there's a screw driver on the seat, jam it between the starter posts to get it going. Things like that are why we like old cars and trucks, they have character.

The piece of metal you pulled out looks like the damper that goes between the inner and outer spring on heads with dual spring valve springs. Hope you get it running in your project.

The vacuum leak is from the power brake vacuum line that was not plugged

My AWESOME Dad built fenderwell headers for these trucks back in the mid 60s at A&B Muffler Shop in FtWorth , Texas, 4 inch collectors regular exhaust exited out the side and one bolt collectors to uncap , scared many old neighbors when uncapped, i was 5 yrs old and loved it , damn I miss ole dad at 62yrs old . Most trucks were Cameos and painted blue metallic, A&B Muffler Shop owners name was Oscar Byrd and loved cool stuff .

It didn't run bad once you got the hand-operated fuel regulator figured out. And that brake booster vacuum line is a BIG vacuum leak.

Looking good 🎉 I have always heard that you are supposed to put dielectric grease under the rubber washer that has the coil contact spring. Between the rubber washer and the cap. Maybe it doesn’t matter who knows 🎉

Engine appears to be a 1977 or 1978 350 from the carb, dist., accessories, pollution gear, and engine color. Those are some of the "soft cam" years where they liked to round cam lobes off.

I always assume the worst. I think the water is from a cracked head or blown gasket. Hence the guy selling it cheap to get rid of it. Hope you have a carb laying around.

Sounds like it needs a 5/8’s race cam, a tunnel ram, a pair of carbs and chrome valve covers.

If the bowl isn't getting refilled there's less weight pushing fuel through the jets. You don't need an accelerater pump to idle. You do need a constant fuel source.

That metal you pulled looks like a very destroyed keeper ring from a breather cap (very old school, circa 1960s) that would have gone in that hole beforer the cover was bolted in place.

The filler and breather ports would have been opposite sides with some aftermarket valve covers. Those stock ones were probably slapped on so he could keep the "shiny" set.

I enjoy your videos and I have been watching for long time. I have trouble keeping up now that you've gone to three a week. But one thing that bothers me is these really stupid headlines. This is not a "Marketplace Failure," it's a Marketplace success. The engine seems pretty decent. There was another one a while back that went like: "Failure, engine doesn't fit." I thought how on earth can a small block Chevy not fit a Tri-five Chevy, and Dan has done it many times. Please write better headlines; some of these are so bad they discourage me from watching the video, and then when I do watch it it turns out just fine. Good luck in Alberta; I lived there for 14 years (and Manitoba for six.)

Being that a guy doesn’t clean very much, look for loctite 263 and 243, there’s oil tolerant and won’t foul in oil.
