Aircraft appeared overloaded for takeoff distance. Float planes have to come up on "step" (like a boat comes up on plane) before you can safely lift. This pilot showed poor judgement in his takeoff attempt.

@Castorero1 If you look up the tail number, apparently this wreck was caused by a cross-wind that the pilot could not correct for with just rudder input. I don't really buy that, and I'm not sure why he wouldn't chop throttle when he went that far off "center-line" either. Big time pilot error if you ask me.
@friedchicken114 жыл бұрын

I'm led to wonder about the experience this pilot had. Just before the camera man ducked you a can see a wind sock that is quite limp showing maybe a 5 knot crosswind. I wonder if the pilot could have taxied around a bit to the viewers right and tried a takeoff more into the wind. I also wonder if the weight and balance was correct.
@YouWastesTube15 жыл бұрын
There is seemingly more water ahead if the pilot steers correctly. I guess you know about the wind. It appeared from view that because the plane was headed for land, the pilot pulled up and stalled out, and started to spin left. Did the wind cause the plane to skid heavily across the water to the left, from power up?
@kwaussie46913 жыл бұрын
he could have had a longer take off run by not turning left, My guess is he saw the camera and wanted to give the guy some great footage of the beaver lifting off and low passing him. Beavers are not highly powered and he did not have enough, Airspeed.
@GaijinGDB15 жыл бұрын
Well listening to the recording of the tower communication, it seemed as if he was taking off. They did tell him not to delay due to approaching taffic, so I am not sure if he was in a rush to line up and get out, or if it was a takeoff gone bad from the get go.
@terran327613 жыл бұрын
In frame 0:40 the windsock indicates a crosswind. you can see the plane turn into the crosswind on liftoff. When taking off on water you need to head directly into the wind. When ATC gave wind direction that should be your takeoff heading
@bombardierdude1512 жыл бұрын
if I'm correct, there is two lakes connected by a small canal. since he was departing from the eastern lake to the west, why didn't he turn into the canal for more takeoff room.

cherrypoots, FYI I've spent many years commercially fishing in Alaska and had the opportunity to fly with monguse39 on many many occasions. His experience in single engine land and see planes in all kinds of weather, conditions and aircraft. is beyond that which most people could ever hope to accomplish in a life time. His assessment of this accident is no doubt spot on. And your comment re: beavers taking off in 35knt crosswind? Why do you think not? Is 35knt xwind too much?
@jagmotorsports15 жыл бұрын
Did the pilot look at the video before making a statement and did the NTSB believe him? At the 0:41 second mark you can see a 15 knot windsock that shows a 4 knot wind. No gust, Pilot error. At the 0:34 mark the pilot tries to force the plane in the air and the right float seperates from the water leaving drag on the left float yawing the plane left. When the camera follows the plane it appears there's lots of space to get the plane in the air. A little more right rudder a little more patience.

Do enlighten me as to what "rule of thumb" is used by bush pilots to see if they have enough room left to get airborne when taking off? What's the answer on this one?
@3DRIGEUR15 жыл бұрын
At about 0.25, there is a miss and momentary rpm drop on the engine and it does not seem to run quite back up to its former speed. On first liftoff attempt, the port float stays stuck and yaws the aircraft to the left towards the cameraman. Crosswind from starboard?? From that point on they were were committed to a short ride and the cameraman becoming suddenly amazed at his own potential mortality. I think he did well following the aircraft to rest in spite of nearly being blended.
@ljackso13 жыл бұрын
Great video! Wonder why the pilot didn't continue down the lake rather than try to take off without enough speed?

I think you have the wrong blog. Who said anything about landings? The subject at hand is an aircraft taking off at slow speed in a crosswind. The crumpled up aircraft at the end says it all.....unless you have a better explanation.
@gmcjetpilot14 жыл бұрын
@Mellowbuzz1974 This started before the first bag or passenger was loaded. I don't have float plane rating, but flew out of the Pacific North West and Canada, lots of float planes. My friend has a C185 on floats. He didn't have the performance, did not use proper controls or exceeded the X-wind to track that desired takeoff water way. Many GA pilots fail to understand the rejected T/O and Ldg decision making or aren't displined enough to brief their self in a single pilot cockpit.

Some reports in the news claim it was a wind gust changing its direction. I think instead the pilot was unable to put the floats on its steps. You can clearly see that he is ploughing through the water and therefore cannot gain speed.

flow of the propeller, gyroscopic effect and asymmetric traction basic aviation rules, the plane as always go a litle bit to the left when you put full power.

read the thread. 35knt landing came up previously in postings above. Obviously it has nothing to do with this video. It is just an argument between someone who knows and someone who doesn't know, and support from someone who knows he who knows, knows. I errantly posted above re: xwind landings and meant take offs as that is what was said to be impossible by an "I don't think so" comment.

I meant do you think that he intended to go up the channel but was so inept that he missed the turn. How many degrees did he have to turn. From the tube it looks to be 30 or so. To me it just looks like he intended to clear the bank on the heading he was on.

there is no wind. Look at the red wind monitor "sock" in front of the cameraman: it is pointing down. An aircraft can sustain more crosswind than this. As one guy commented, there a long strip of lake on starboard. He did not need to pull up at this point.
@FlyZRG14 жыл бұрын

fully pilot error. in a float plane during takeoff you pull back on the control and as you speed up you push the controls forward until the plane feels like its on step (on step means the plane is sitting on the little step you see on the bottom of the floats usually bellow the door) this pilot didn't seem to get the plane on step, almost as if he just forgot until last minute. without getting on that step the plane simply will not take off.
@apredictableecho14 жыл бұрын
@fegolem Its interesting you say that, I wonder if he accidentally had left the prop lever in anything other than the "high rpm" position. Would cause reduced power, reduced RPM, and high loading.

@emprivate14 жыл бұрын
edfreen, P factor torque will never go away. The prop wash will always hit the side of the rudder and force the AC to the left (or right with an opposite turning prop) Being in the water the floats would absorb a lot of this but it would still be acting. What I want to know is why didnt he even look like stearing the AC down that runway of water? He was always heading left,, on the step or not, even a fast taxi one would keep it straight down the middle.
@Trendywun15 жыл бұрын
Great vid man!
@ethugp3pp3r15 жыл бұрын
The airplane veered to the left toward a steep bank, and the pilot was unable to correct the deviation with the rudder. He did not feel that he could reduce power as he would slam into the bank. The airplane lifted off, but the float collided with the top of the bank. The airplane cart wheeled about 160 degrees to the left before coming to rest on its right side. It sustained substantial damage to the wings, fuselage, and floats.
@razz3306915 жыл бұрын
If you notice at the end of the vid he forgot to put the water rudders down. And when the cross wind hit him along with the left float dipping back in, he couldn't compensate.
