You couldn't get much more of a reference performance than this. The original composer, and a band assembled of the commitment level of the US Marine Corp. Wonderful.

I love how much fun the composer/conductor is having at 3:10. His face and the fact that he’s mouthing the rhythms says it all.

The very first time i heard this symphony was in 2005, performed by the Utah State University concert band. I heard that they were going to be doing a "Lord of the Rings" concert and got so excited that they were going to be playing pieces from the movie. At first I was very confused, then disappointed, and finally incredibly grateful to have accidentally stumbled upon this masterpiece of a symphony.

I performed this song around 20 years ago. Couldn't remember who composed it and the movies made this really hard to find. So glad I did though. I love this piece.

I read your comment and 20 years ago!? That's a long time but it was only the year. I first played it the summer after my sophomore year at IU summer music clinic in 2001!

Many people hearing only the title expect to hear the movie's soundtrack. As a euphonium player, I far prefer de Meij's version!

Interesting. I too played this around 20 years ago, maybe 2002 or 03, with the Valparaiso University orchestra while I was in high school. They had some program going on that allowed high school kids to join one of their concerts. Amazing time, especially with the acoustics of their cathedral.

@@davidbloss9134 At high school regionals we played the orchestra arrangement of Paul Lavender's abridged version. I'm pretty sure most of us thought it was the actual soundtrack at first. I'm also pretty sure very few of us were disappointed to find out it wasn't once we played it.

I first heard a recording of this piece (by the Dutch Royal Military Band) in the early 1990s (just happened to see it in a record store), and got my band to perform it in 1995. Glad that in the ensuing 25 years it has become a classic. Was at this performance, which is at the customary phenomenal standard of the Marine Band.
