This was extremely helpful - I’m a new boat owner and am having a lot of anxiety about my first de-winterize. This pretty much covered everything - thank you!

bought a brand new 3cyl. yamaha 2 stroke 40 hp with powertrim 20 years back. It was kept on the boat on a trailer and the total boat with engine and trailer was covered by a big piece of heavy truck trailer tarp. Between engine and tarp I used an old bedsheet to keep it from rubbing the paint. Had made a horizontal pole on the centerline of the boat to keep the tarp from collecting water. Tarp was on the ground on both sides and wrapped around the outboard too. totally sheltered from the element but allowed a little breeze to flow through near the ground from front to back. used the boat almost every weekend in summer and would drive it hours on end for kneeboarding etc. when I bought it new they gave me extra sparkplugs and gearlube both to change after breaking in ( according to the manual). Well, long story short, only changed the gear lube once and the spark plugs never. sold it after all those years with the extra set of plugs I got when I got it. outboard still looked like new. inside and out. only had some worn off paint on the tip of the fin/prop guard from touching some sand while beaching when trimmed up and the edges of the prop lost their white coat of paint. repainted the prop when I sold it. Great engine. never missed a beat. Never opened the carbs, nothing and like I said never ever changed plugs. Never understand why you would. A car makes a lot more hours and even those I only changed once over the last 10 years. Same for our current boat with a yr 2000 mercruiser 4,3 v6. engine looks like new, runs great. had it for 10 years and had the boatshop change plugs once while they had it for bellow replacement after I just bought it. Changed oil twice myself. 10 years back and like 3 years back. Engine looks like new and runs like new. Maybe I am stupid but my credo is if it aint broken, don't mess with it.

We appreciate you sharing this, it’s great to hear this and we enjoy reading comments like this. Sounds like you took incredible care of your boat, that increases the life and reliability of both the boat and its engine significantly. We are rebuilding a 1989 GlassPort that has an inboard/outboard. The outdrive is an Alpha one Gen 1. We will be uploading the entire bellows replacement series soon. Below is a link to our Boat/Jet ski PlayList. kzbin.info/aero/PLjCXOz8TSkZlae2qY97uVVTm3JdBOUoRS We even have my parents Jet ski “In-house”…literally…🤣…for DIY repair videos. If I may add a little advise... Before you start any outboard after it has been sitting for the winter, Pull the plugs, squirt a little WD-40 or similar in the heads, leave the plugs out and slowly turn the motor by the fly wheel or prop (In Gear) if everything turns smoothly, great install plugs. Add water and start it up. If you do this your motor will last longer you may just save yourself from serious engine damage.

Excellent video. May I kindly correct one thing. An impeller pump is centrifugal , not like a piston /positve displacement, meaning the impeller will not pull in water and a piston pump will because the impeller only propels available water and will not pump air yet the piston pump will. Which is really the reason some outboards (probably most) do fine using the muffs and other outboards don't. Excellent video again and thanks for taking the time to show outboard maintenance.

Going in to summer your boat will need to be de-winterized after all the prepping for the cold months. Taking care of your boat throughout the seasons can have your boat looking great for much longer.

I’m starting the season with a half tank of gas that was treated with fuel stabilizer. Should I top the tank off with fresh gas before I fire it up? Excellent video!
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 2 жыл бұрын
We appreciate that, is the engine a 2-stroke? If so, we recommend burning the gas that’s in the tank before adding more.

Correct!, it’s a outboard and I run 50:1. Interesting, I would have thought it would have been beneficial to mix it with some newer gas just in case. Thanks for the info!
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 2 жыл бұрын
@@romand123 Thanks for the reply. The reason being is it will throw off the balance/mixture of fuel and oil as well as fuel stabilizer. You may run into engine sputtering as it tries to burn the imbalanced mixture of the three.

Is it unusual for the engine to run at higher rpms during first start after de winterizing or is that indicating something is wrong
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching & in most cases, you will experience sporadic rpm’s after long storage...especially if the cylinders are filled with fogging oil. Keep us posted on how engine runs.

@DIYwithMichaelBorders

Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. First thing to check is the rubber hose that guides water out of that little hole. With engine off, remove engine and locate rubber hose that connects to the plastic nipple that feeds water out of engine in that stream-like-manner. It’s very common for these hoses to get clogged with debris. Keep us posted. 😎👍

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders the water is running freely but what i was saying is that the water after 2 minutes of running turned to hoy and my overheat alarm turned on
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 2 жыл бұрын
@@bee2333 Thanks for the reply. It is normal for the exiting water to be hot as it has passed through engine & absorbed as much of the heat it can to keep engine cool. In your case, it’s getting too hot & triggering your alert. Is the water a solid stream or does it sputter/spit out? Your impeller may be in its early stages of failure.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders steady stream. Impellar water pump kit was put on in the fall and i had it test run in a tub and it idles great with no overheating. Yesterday i did the initial start of the season. The stream is steady but ill take the lower unit off and check impellar. Thermostat housing had some sandy and corrosion gunk so im hoping if anything it clogged the thermostat
