In the 16th and 17th centuries, the silver fleet was an annual convoy of Spanish ships in which valuables were shipped from the Spanish colonies in America to Spain. In the Netherlands, the silver fleet is best known for its conquest by Piet Hein in 1628.
Piet Hein made a plan on behalf of the West India Company (WIC) in 1626 to hijack the silver fleet and ship the valuables to the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands . The Republic was at that time involved in the Eighty Years' War with Spain.
In 1627 Piet Hein committed two smaller hijackings in All Saints Bay , and in September 1628 he captured the silver fleet in the Battle of the Bay of Matanzas. The other fleet left from present-day Venezuela. Half the fleet from Venezuela had been warned and remained out of range. The loot consisted of 177,000 pounds of silver, 66 pounds of gold, 1,000 pearls, 37,375 hides, 361 chests of sugar, 3,000 bags of indigo and cochineal, smaller lots of silk, musk , amber and bezoar and many pieces of jewelry. It could pay for the war against Spain for a year. Estimates of the current value of the loot range from €100 million based on the current silver price and €100 billion based on what could be done with the money at the time. Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik and fleet commander Piet Hein received a large share in the loot.
