As a Canadian, I was saddened when our war with a great little story behind it is over on the one hand, but on the other hand I think its really cool that Canada now technically shares a land border with more than just the United States, and a European power no less. Beyond that we have a much closer nautical border with France than most people would expect... Although that's just because France held onto a globally empire of tiny islands lol.

Little known is that just previously to the flare-up in the "Whiskey War", Denmark had been offended by the appointment of an unqualified political hack as Canadian ambassador to Denmark. Canada has a highly respected diplomatic corps. Usually they are well educated scholars familiar with the history and culture of the countries they are sent to, and have hard-nosed diplomatic experience in world conflicts. Normally, Denmark, as an important ally, was sent a highly qualified and experienced Canadian ambassador. For example, a previous ambassador to Denmark had learned to speak Danish fluently and was married a Dane. But in 2002, the Canadian government appointed Alfonso Gagliano, a political liability with barely concealed mob connections and a record of political corruption, as ambassador to Denmark. Danes were rightfully offended. Ironically, it was Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham, the man whose visit to Hans Island in 2005 was so significant in the conflict, who forced Gagliano to be removed from his ambassadorship in 2004. The current Canadian ambassador to Denmark, Emi Furuya, and the current Danish Ambassador to Canada, Hanne Fugl Eskjær both appear to be competent and well qualified.

Hehe as a kid, I remembered watching TV and seeing a news report about Gagliano being sent to a remote land after the political scandal in Canada. Back in 2016, I went to the Canadian embassy in Denmark to renew my passport. Then I realized that the building where Gagliano were standing in front of in that news report, was the same building here in Copenhagen. 🤣
@philpaine3068
@philpaine3068 2 жыл бұрын
@@matstrungdang4597 The hilarious part of the story is that the Canadian government, anxious to get rid of a nuisance, tried to appoint him as ambassador to the Holy See [like, Gagliano spoke Italian, right?], a job that would look real prestigious but be diplomatically insignificant. The Vatican took one look at Gagliano's file and told Ottawa "no way." Oops!! At that moment, an opening appeared in Denmark, so PM Jean Chrétien stuffed him there. Chrétien's administration was notorious for paying off local politicians who had delivered tricky ridings for him. Paul Martin, who succeeded him as leader, was a strict by-the-book player, and he did his best to clean up any corruption in the party, getting rid of the bad eggs, and in general ran a clean administration. Getting Gagliano out of Copenhagen was probably first item on his "to do" list. However, the damage had been done to Canada's reputation in Scandinavia [Don't think the Norwegians and Swedes weren't paying attention].

As a Canadian, I am thoroughly disappointed that ownership the island is not determined through drinking contest. An annual drinking contest between Canada and Greenland held say in the start of July. The winner taking complete ownership of the island the end of July and turn it over to the new winner the following July. Perhaps it could be five drinking contests, each a different sort of drinking contest. Like a one day Olympics of getting rightly hammered.

It was interesting to read it in the papers here in Canada. A new border with another nation, and a European one no less is a nice change for a country that takes forever to decide on doing the most minor of things. I was actually aware of "The Whiskey War" before, but this was a very good explanation of it. I especially liked how they incorporated the sponsor into the story, that was clever, I usually tune out when it's the same old same old sponsors like Nord and Raid, but that was entertaining. By the way, from what I understand, there is an even more obscure border 'dispute' involving another island, I heard long ago about an island between Canada and the US that neither wants, and the mapmakers routinely draw a line on the opposite side so as to give it away, not claim it. Can't remember the name of it, and it's quite small, just a little island with a lot of trees in the middle of a river, I would presume the St Lawrence but I could be wrong. Been many years since I heard the story.

Technically speaking, Canada also had a land border with the Netherlands! During WWII, Princess Juliana of the Netherlands was evacuated to Canada. While in Canada, she became pregnant. If her daughter was born in Canada, she would become a Canadian citizen. To resolve this, Britain’s King George VI declared any place in Canada occupied by Princess Juliana during childbirth would be declared an extraterritorial Dutch territory. Four rooms in a Canadian hospital were prepared with a Dutch flag, and for a short period of time, those four rooms on the third floor of a hospital were officially Dutch territory.

Denmark’s responce was to … take Norway to court. The Permanent Court of International Justice decided that all of Greenland was Danish in 1933, and Norway accepted it. The water rights where completely settled. You are simply wrong. The only thing in dispute was the 'dry' land on Hans Island itself, due to an oversight in the treaty that handled the strait. To quote the treaty: "The Government of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Government of Canada, having decided to establish in the area between Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Islands a dividing line beyond which neither Party exercising its rights under the Convention on the Continental Shelf of April/29/1958 will extend its sovereign rights for the purpose of exploration and exploitation of the natural resources of the continental shelf" It is very clear. As a dane, you must understand, this dispute gave an impressions that Canada and Denmark had a huge respect for each other. This dispute was hilarious. And danish people for the most part loved the brotherly back and forth. We have had that with Sweden for hundreds of years. The real lecture is not that we could draw a line. But that we could have a friendly dispute for so many years. A dispute that arguably made candada our scandinavian cousin.

The boundaries of Danmark and Canada could be argued that is a quite nonsensical dispute in the first place (no resource, wasteland, and the location is absolutely unstrategic. Very far from the homeland) But let's look at Indonesia and the Philippines' borders, they are a better example of a peaceful and positive about each other's boundaries. On one hand, it's very cool that the border dispute was resolved peacefully. On the other hand, it's a border dispute that looks like it was a good excuse for both countries to have a bit of a laugh and some shenanigans without anyone getting hurt. Both Canada and Denmark could have kept the border dispute "war" going, and eventually it would have made the history books in a few ways. The longest running war ever, the longest war without a single soldier KIA, and probably a few other records would be set too.
@Mirvra

''The longest running war ever'' ... Denmark already holds one half of that record... >.> If the literal myths are to be believed, Denmark and Sweden were on and off at war with eachother for 1,514(roughly) years. And yes, there's been war between those two so far back in history that you have to enter the realm of actual MYTHS to try and find the start of it all.

as a Canadian, it's sad to see the end of the Whisky War. We love our Danish brothers, hell we even played a big role in liberating them and also stayed after the second World War just to help the Danish rebuild, operate machinery and help out with their agriculture. I would of preferred our "war" to continue but not as a land dispute, I would of liked it if it were to continue as a tradition. The land holds no value to either party involved so why not send each other gifts for the other countrymen to find when they visit? I have a few friends online that are Danish and met some in real life as well, they are some of the kindest, most helpful people I know and I have nothing but the utmost respect for them, they tell me how much Canada means to their people and how they are eternally grateful for everything we've done for them. Only the Canadians and the Danish could "fight" each other and still celebrate each other's victories and triumphs while maintaining friendly relations. Cheers to my Danish friends and cheers to the wonderfully weird war we had with each other. ❤🇨🇦🤝🇩🇰❤

It's unfortunate that it took one of the most aggressive countries in the world starting a war to get two of the most peaceful countries to settle a "minor" issue with a line drawn down a rock. Keeping a disagreement going for half a century with sarcasm, whisky, and the occasional float by is still a better way to handle a dispute than war. Both sides in this situation remained friendly, even while disagreeing. Show me two other countries that remained friends while peacefully negotiating a border issue. None come to mind.

Åland upon gaining independence alongside Russia even sent a petition to Sweden's parliament wanting to be annexed. The issue was solved by the predecessor to the UN and Åland remained in Finnish hands albeit as an autonomous territory

If I recall correctly, the Åland Islands must not have any military presence on them.

Greenland isn't an autonomous region, it's a constituent country. The constituent countries of the UK are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The constituent countries of the Danish Kingdom are Denmark itself (yes that's also a constituent country), the Faroe islands and Greenland.

As a Canadian, I’m disappointed that our adorable little war with Denmark is over. It was good fun. But I’m also excited to have a land border with Greenland. Technically, the title of the video is imprecise because we’ve had a maritime border with Denmark for a while now. But now that we even have a land border, that mean we could join the EU now? 😀 I want an EU passport so badly! We could slip into the UK’s spot relatively easily!
