Author and economist Dambisa Moyo drew a crowd of more than 400 UW students on November 13th for her lecture, "Dead Aid: Why Aid is Not Working and How There is a Better Way for Africa."
The 2009 Stanley Knowles Humanitarian Service Lecture was sponsored by St. Paul's University College in partnership with the Faculty of Environment, the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and the Balsillie School of International Affairs.

Re-watching this in 2023 in preparation for a graduate class Theorizing Foreign Aid. Disappointed to see that what she said almost 15 years ago is as relevant today as it was then. Aid is dead, long live aid. What to do?

While I agree that we must do everything in our power to fast tract our economies; we cannot underestimate the power of the people on the land. A great percentage of China's upward mobility can be attributed to enterprises born out of scaled up formerly subsistent ventures. This is usually driven by state funding, and privatized micro-lending.

The problem with aid/investments is it comes with strings attached. Of course there should be some guarantee that money is not being thrown down a bottomless pit, but not the way things are being handled now. I do not believe the post colonisers want to see Africa become totally independent and get the nagging feeling they want to keep control of the resources and power. There is a big rush to take over the African continent by Europe and now China and Russia. They 'invest' with unrealistic interest rates which the countries cannot afford. In return for the remittances, land, mines and even said companies that have been established by the Africans are taken over. Generally speaking, does the rest of the world really care about Africa? I have my suspicions and highly doubt that. It will be a long time before Africans are on a level playing field as the rest of the world. As the Dambisa Moyo says, Africans are looked upon as second class citizens. It is up to the continent to bring themselves into the 21st century and be a force to be reckoned with as they were, long before slavery. I absolutely agree that aid should be cut off so that their brilliant minds can develop once more, instead of being complacent with begging hands out.

That premise is overrated, to the contrary African leaders are super keen on African development. The real problem is foreign interference in all it's various forms especially dead AID.
