'A Means of Escape' was the first professional studio recording by Dead Can Dance featuring the original line-up of Brendan Perry (Vocals & Electric Guitar), Lisa Gerrard (Pearl Syncussion), Paul Erikson (Bass Guitar) and Simon Monroe (Drums).
Recorded in early 1982 by the Australian producer, Chris Thompson at Richmond Recorders, Melbourne, it captures the early Joy Division inspired wall of sound that became DCD's sonic trademark in the early eighties.

After all these years listening to DcD its really nice to come across an unheard song. Pretty punky too.

Their infatuation with Joy Division at this early stage was immense, with "Dead Souls" audibly serving as a template here (with traces of "Wilderness" - the title DCD themselves used years later, for one of their own unique pieces of music). Sure, this is DCD at their youth's most naive but something in Perry's already mature, gorgeous voice says, DCD were aware they wouldn't be getting away with it had they stayed in that particular mode. Their 1984 debut album, while still relying on some of Joy Division's sound, "Dead Can Dance" already pointed in their own direction, resulting in one of the most idiosyncratic careers in music.

The mask, Eleusis, Sloth are probably my favorite 3 tracks from these guys. There are a few tracks I feel could be played faster in studio or live(1,08x to 1,15x ) that would have improved them ,such as Anywhere in the world , Eleusis and Sloth. But that probably depends on the generation. Those over 66/67 years old would probably prefer them slow. Depends on when we grew up.

There is the Garden of the arcane delights +Peel sessions album ,but not with this particular song on. "The impaled man" was I think never released either, a pretty OK song.
