Dead car plasma unit (fixed) with schematic

My guess at what was wrong with this unit was completely wrong. It's as if they repurposed an existing circuit design and I initially thought they were trying to run a dielectric barrier plasma generator from DC.
In reality the fault was with component tolerances - possibly off-tolerance transistors. But having tested the transistors on a tester which identified then correctly and gave a plausible gain, I had a wild goose chase of component swapping.
Once I got it going I then found it did kinda work, but not as well as it should have due to the weird choice of output circuitry.
I get the feeling this is a clone of a clone with the factory not quite understanding the operation.
On a plus note, it's not one of the completely fake ones with a blue LED and fake circuitry. And we did get to do a very deep dive into the circuitry of this novel device.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:- www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of KZbin's algorithm quirks, allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

One slight correction: This isn't a Royer oscillator. It's very similar, but the Royer oscillator does not have a capacitor across the transformer and relies solely on transformer saturation to oscillate. This circuit is known by many names, I used to call it a Mazzilli driver (actually this one is a bit different, as it uses a feedback winding to drive BJTs, rather than diodes to drive MOSFETs), but other people may call it something different. In academia I'd probably call it a "self-driven resonant current-source inverter." It uses a parallel LC circuit (the primary of the transformer and the 68nf capacitor) at resonance, which is current limited by the 68 uH inductor connected at the transformer centre-tap. As it doesn't rely on driving the transformer all the way to saturation and it operates at resonance, allowing zero-voltage-switching, it's much more efficient than a Royer oscillator, especially when MOSFETs are used instead of BJTs.
@blg53
@blg53 Ай бұрын
I heard this circuitry referred to as "Harmonic Royer". Presence of the capacitor between collectors allows with the right tuning to produce a sinusoidal output. "Pure Royer" can't do that.

The problem with copies of copies of copies is that inevitably errors creep in, especially if you throw in the business of using the components to hand, rather than the optimal parts. I would be kind of leery of using an ozone generator in an enclosed place like a car. Sure, the instructions might say in badly translated English that the device is to be used only when the car is unoccupied, but given that you can just plug it in to the standard cigarette/12V power point I can see someone driving around with the thing activated. Ozone also doesn't play well with rubber, plastics, fabrics, paint and metal (all of which you find in the interior of cars) so you might just be shortening the life of door seals, upholstery, plastic trim parts and wire insulation if you leave the thing running for long periods. Maybe just not smoke or eat fast food in the car so it doesn't smell. If you're transporting a bunch of smelly footballers home from a match, well that's what the roof rack is for!😂

Those of you who are long time fans of this channel will know that I am the channel's village idiot. At the age of 82, I don't understand electronics and I ask some really dumb questions. So this one is probably also dumb, but why are there so many devices producing ozone? Humans have been around for eons without having the need of ozone devices, and why do so many of such devices not work? To those who wonder why I subscribe to his channel, if I don't understand what he says, his voice is so soothing that he takes away the cares of the day.
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom Ай бұрын
You're definitely not the channel's village idiot by a long chalk. Ozone and an orgy of other exotic, but short lived molecules are constantly generated in outdoor air by nature. Indoor air goes stale quickly as the active molecules revert back to a more stable form. Devices like these can emulate nature indoors when used in a sensible manner, and keep the air fresh and sterile.

I’ve tinkered with these after using the rental grade ozonator odor removers. I got 2 that were intended for hunters to deodorize their gear inside the truck, the first one worked for years for occasional odor removal on a jump start pack and overnight in cars. That one died and wouldn’t make ozone. The second one never worked and I could never figure out why. I was amazed the first time I heard about an electrical odor remover, it seemed like magic.

In some of the newer cars, the cig lighter sockets no longer stay powered for a long period after you turn the engine off. For example in mine, a 2009 Ford. In some sense this s good, because some people run their USB to FM transmitters in their cars to have MP3 playback, so these will eventually be turned off without further intervention. But for the sake of charging devices or operating these gadgets, you would need to wire a separate permanently hot or manually switched socket. In all my previous cars the sockets were always powered.

Interesting. I grew up with Japanese cars, 87, 92, 97, 04, and they were all tied to accessory / ignition. The Dodge vans at work are the first ones I've used that are always hot. I thought it was a new thing! It's quite useful, but I've had to get used to unplugging chargers. One van has both with a key or battery symbol on the cover which is nice. Key one never worked, and I can't be bothered to fix it.

Copying a copy of a copy etc can work if the copier understands how the thing works, and what the critical values and characteristics of the parts are. Using what transistors that you have on hand can also work if you can substitute other parts to compensate but if you don’t test those parts to make sure they’re in spec, you get what Clive found.

I’m reminded of those plasma cluster units with a positive and negative set of carbon fiber brushes in somewhat close proximity. If I recall correctly, the effect was basically that of an ionizer with increased ozone production. Perhaps this was shooting for the same goal but coming from the opposite direction. It sounds like the diode makes it a worse ozone producer but helps it double as in ionizer. If ozone production is already on the high side, that might make sense, I guess.

We have two Toyota cars, and the 12V sockets are switched off when the key is removed (or in the "off" position). This means they couldn't be used to power devices such as camping lights or ozone generators while the car isn't in use. I found this out when I tried to use an electrically powered tyre pump while my car was turned off.
@tin2001
@tin2001 Ай бұрын
Pretty much every car ever turns off the lighter socket once the car is off. Some might delay it 10-30 seconds, but it goes off. Even sockets in the rear of large 4WD vehicles where they suggest a fridge might be used will have it switch off when the car is off. You don't want to flatten your battery by running unexpected high current devices.

If you take the diode out, wouldn't that mean that the neon bulb is operating on every cycle rather than every other cycle? Perhaps the original designer found that it made the neon bulb burn out too quickly or generate excess ozone and put this in to reduce the strain/output. This was then copied into the production of this unit with no actual knowledge of what was happening.

It should work OK if the socket is wired with the correct polarity.

very interesting way to generate Ozone using a neon bulb! I have never seen this before. I am used to the needle or carbon fiber method
@sootikins
@sootikins Ай бұрын
Needle or fiber is for ion generation. Electrodes separated by dielectric barrier (like the device in the video) are for ozone generation. Two different though similar processes.
@janami-dharmam
@janami-dharmam Ай бұрын
this is the classic lab technique to produce ozone- it is called silent electric discharge. oxygen molecules get dissociated at the glass surface and then they attach to another oxygen molecule. The needle attached to a high voltage produces very little ozone but useful for producing negative ions - electrons are emitted and they attach to the gas molecules. Because the circuit is not completed, the current is going to be very low.

Wow, I bought something like this years ago. It has a nearly identical circuit except that it was meant to produce negative icons. It has a carbon fibre cluster instead of a neon. They use a 3mm led for the blue glow. I couldn't feel a real difference so I threw it in my odds and sods bin. Now after watching this video, I decided to look at it again and the carbon fibres are nearly nonexistent. Thanks for this peek into how this unit works (I now know it's not a ripoff), and thanks for all the effort you put into all of your vids. Cheers mate! 👍

Doubt it. The frequency is way too high. My semi-educated guess is that the EL wire would light up insanely bright for a few milliseconds then go out and never light again.

EL wire is a much lower voltage and frequency.

Using the (isolated) ht output from a microwave transformer, across a plate of glass with two foil electrodes- doesn't work. No ozone. Nothing. Can't figure out why.
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom Ай бұрын
I'd really recommend against using a microwave transformer for anything like that. They are the biggest electrical killer in modern homes. The raw high voltage output may actually be too low for anything but the thinnest glass. A neon sign transformer would work better for something like that. (Also capable of giving a strong shock.)

Do cars in the UK still get cigarette/cigar lighters in them? My 2014 model year Ford has neither a cigarette lighter nor an ashtray in it. More US government intervention determining what's best for people, I guess.
@RB-qq1ky
@RB-qq1ky Ай бұрын
In the market I’m familiar with (Asia-Pacific) Ford used to supply what they called a ‘smokers kit’ option, which generally consisted of a patch panel which added a cigarette lighter to the existing 12v ‘power supply’ outlet and an ashtray which either replaced a trim panel somewhere centre dash or replaced a cup holder. Not available for all models though. I suspect EU & UK models would have the same arrangement. I’m surprised the US market doesn’t have it as an option?
