This is loosely based on Dick Francis' first fictional novel which is well worth reading . It includes an attractive girl called Kate but doesn't end with Admiral running in the National. (I had better not spoil it any more for people who haven't read it yet !)The last bit of head-on racing footage looked like Red Rum just beating Crisp in 1973. The colours and positions of the horses are exactly the same.

I enjoyed this. Anything with Judy and Michael is well worth watching. Wish Michael never smoked. But a lot of people did back in the day!

YOU 'wished Michael hadn't smoked' not being funny but what has it got to do with you what Michael did or didn't do or what choices he might have made.

Scott Antony a very talented actor and fine horseman by the looks of it.

agree about the riding wonder how they trained that horse for the Train jump

Don't be fatuous. The horse was Cornishman V, who won Olympic team gold in Munich under Mary Gordon Watson and under Richard Meade in Mexico, plus world and European titles. For this stunt he was ridden by Lord Oaksey.

@edronc2007 What a bizarre thing to call someone for simply asking a perfectly reasonable question! John would have said exactly the same thing too the lady simply mentioned about the horse making an impressive jump over rail crossing gates! But you go into some mini equine CV re it's achievements....and you call HER 'fatuous' 🤔🤣🤣

Scott Antony , who plays the lead can also be seen on The Savage Messiah ( also on You Tube , along with its clips previews and trailers , and in The Mutations and The Freakmaker also on You Tube in clips ) . His highly regarded performance in the BBC Classic series 'Cheri' directed by the late Claude Whatham ( Swallows and Amazons , Cider with Rosie , etc ) is currently unavailable on DVD. He has a Facebook page covering his acting career of the 1970's and more recent travelogue and arthouse poem/prose photo short films . These films can be seen on www.vimeo.com/scottantony and at film and art festivals in the uk.

Definitely some use of real footage of the 1973 Grand National, particularly at the start and end of the race. They do seem to jump the Canal Turn a lot more often than they should do!

A good film, but it is a pity that they changed the plot almost beyond recognition from the book.

29:40 just the type of (very dangerous) railings that you really find at a racecourse - eh?

I read the book in Russsian in my childhood. It really impressed. Then there was a Russian version but I didn't like it much. Later I read it in the original. And now I found this film. Well, they couldn't have shot a nice movie based on the book anyway

Well, I finished it. Michael's role is a good one and allows him to play against type so perhaps that's why they did the film. Every time I saw him with a cigarette I wanted to slap it out of his hand!

Well, the poor horses! Cruel way to treat them.

Well that was a huge disappointment. They've just taken one of my favourite books and turned it into an awful mish mash of nothing. I fast forwarded in the end because I couldn't bear to watch any more.

Me too. It's in-effing-credible!

@@edronc2007 If you are a Dick Francis fan The Racing Game is much better. It was a 70s tv series based on Sid Halley. Of course it's very dated now but the characters were true to the books I felt, and 'Sid' really could ride which makes a change for these things! I watched them a few years ago on You Tube but I can't find them now. You might have better luck. Oh by the way, 'Dick Francis Mysteries' with Ian McShane? Don't do it, you can never unsee it!
