Performance Notes
Robert Hunter often turned to games of chance as a recurring theme in his lyrics, and “Deal” is one of his most successful forays into that subject matter. The song had a long and much-loved run in live performance by both the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band and has remained a favorite in the ensuing years. At Lockn’ it made for a spirited first-set closer, with inspired lead vocal and guitar by John Mayer and some smokin’ work on the Hammond B-3 by Jeff Chimenti.

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. The inaugural tour kicked off in the fall of 2015 with two sold-out shows at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City and ended with two sold-out performances at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California.
Since then, the band has completed five tours, playing to more than 1.5 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Dead & Company has headlined iconic stadiums across the country including Folsom Field, Autzen Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, the band broke Wrigley Field’s all-time concert attendance record in 2017. Dead & Company’s 2018 Summer Tour ranked in the top 25 of the Top 100 Worldwide Tours and for the past two years, their Summer Tours ranked in the top 15 of the Top Global Concert Tours.

I think he’d be happy knowing shit just went on without him and people continue to have a good time. He was never hung up on the central ness and egotism of the whole thing and he’s obviously a man that appreciated a good time. The dude one said when asked about his musical legacy after his death and responded that once he’s done with it it’s not his anymore and he just wanted to be remembered could play guitar decently. I’m sure he’s happy

I’ve seen/heard all the post Jerry versions of the band and there of been some great guitar players role through there but I think Mayer captures the vibe the best. I really wanted to hate it. This is one time I will gladly admit that I was wrong.
