I stumbled across this last night by accident from the John Mayer subreddit and I've been listening to Grateful Dead music all day today. This has become my favorite song of the sample so far. Overall, their music just has a way of sucking you in. It's something that you don't feel with most music nowadays. I love it.

I think by standing on the Moon Jerry and Hunter were refering to them wanting to be in the crowd with us watching the band. As someone in a band there is a huge difference on how you see the show on stage vs being in the crowd.

I sort of love it how Bob is there at every show looking like a mentor, watching over his pupils becomming the band
@chubspeterson296 жыл бұрын
sort of love it? Bob, throughout the years, has profited from those who are better than him. But he never admits it. He waxes philosophical. But he never speaks truly about what must be a deep insecurity. In the true sense of the word, he is a philistine. Without Jerry, he is nothing. Without Tre, he is nothing. And now without John, he is still nothing. Bob Weir a mentor looking over pupils? To call Tre A and John M his pupils or even advisees would be absurd. Just listen to rat dog. Or the Midnites. Or whatever he's been a part of when you can actually hear his guitar. The great mystery is why Jerry and Phil stuck by him all those years. If I were a journalist and could have asked Jerry one question, I think that would have been it. Why, why did you play with Bob Weir for all those years? Such a mystery to me.
@dutchtraveller59666 жыл бұрын
chubspeterson29 the Dead is a great excuse to make money on something that has been better. There is litteraly nothing Bob or any other original member has to do to draw crowds. I could have stated that Bob is the heart and mind or the financial director who calls the shots. So yeah, i sort pf love it the way it looks and the way i stated above. Becausw there are probably as many reasons not to do it as there are to play as the Dead. John Mayer is someone who can play the songs and brings something of his own to the mix. The other guitarist they had tried to sound like Jerry, which is obviously something they did not want. On the other hand you can state that Mayer is a way to atttavk a younger audience to the music and make even more money on it, but lets not see it that way and leave rhe business of all parties in the dark and just enjoy it while they're doing it and a way to let the Dead live on
@dutchtraveller59666 жыл бұрын
But more like an answer to your message: i dont think Weir is a great musician. I think he is great in complementing the players that lead the music, but when he has to fill those parts himself he is most likely to fail . On the other hand he has a complete unique way of filling those gaps, but only works with the Dead/Garcia/the notes of... i hope you sort of get what im aiming at and excuse my little sourish comment above (tho in my eyes not completely untrue if you leave the romantic part of it put of the observation)

Mayer is without a doubt the best fit for that group and much better than anyone else they've had in that spot. I love Phish and I think Trey is a genius but he didn't do it for me. Mayer has the soul in his voice and his fingertips which make him a perfect fit for this setup. I'm sure there are peeps out there that have seen hundreds of Dead shows that hate this setup more than anything. I only saw 2 real Dead shows which happened to be the last 2 but I've seen every reincarnation they've put together since and this lineup is killer. I've seen some mind blowing performances by Phish and I never thought I'd be moved like that by any other band until I saw these guys for the 3rd time at Wrigley a few mths ago. They killed it and had gotten so much better than the last time I saw them. My point is simple...... we still have this music. I can still see a show that gets me going containing the music I grew to love and has ended up being a huge part of my life. And, they guys playing are having a good time doing it which makes a huge difference. I saw F,urther at Locken a few yrs back and from what I saw and heard Bobby was bored and unsatisfied with what they were doing. In comes John and now you see 3 of the original lineup having a good time and 3 other guys up there probably thinking how the fuck did I end up here? Either way Mayer is the best thing that happened to the music I love because the music is alive and well and you can actually go see a live performance and get chills like I did at Wrigley. As much as people want to hate on the guy I bet that Jerry would have loved playing with the guy.

Otiel is playing boring lines. Half the architecture of this song is missing I think Otiel was great in ARU and ABB, he’s even fun to watch in D&C. But it’s bass playing. He’s being an accompanist, not boldly forging his share of the tune. It’s not Grateful Dead type low frequency lead lines which is what Grateful Dead music requires. Don’t try to talk me into liking Otiel, because I already love him. He’s a great player. I’m just missing a chunk of what my ears want from the bottom of a Grateful Dead tune.
