Finally, the 3rd video I opened, and someone is showing this the correct way to play it. First video was like Guns 'N Roses playin it; all distortion. Second guy, was finger/claw picking and it sounded like James Taylor. About 11 minutes into the video (I didn't watch that much, I clicked ahead to see if it changed, it didn't), the guy looks like he's falling asleep. His eyes looks like he was totally stoned. But here, we finally have a good rendition of the song. I know it, just brushing up on a few parts I may have forgotten. Good job!

Great lesson, however I don't think Taylor's pickups were out of phase. He used a Gibson 335 with a varitone switch which is a notch filter and thins out the sound. I think he is using one of the settings on the varitone.

Mick Taylor actually helped to co-write that one and... NEVER got the credit he deserved! Always loved the way the solo- helps tell the story of a very underrated Stones song. Hello Aldo, hello anybody! Perhaps anybody can answer to my question? What combination of guitar/pickup / amp / pedal (boost?) could it be Mick Taylor(?) used in Winter from Rolling Stones? I mean not the solo and not the rhythm-guitar but the wonderful singing sound from the guitar interjections (....??) in the background. Sorry, I don't know a better description. I hope you can unterstand what I mean. If the sound comes primarily from the amp-drive: Is it possible to get this sound also with a clean amp (Brunetti Singleman) in combination with a pedal? What do you think about? (And ..... yes I know "The most comes from the fingers"). Sorry for my English, greetings from Germany/Bavaria and thank you ahead to all will answer! Christoph

Ciao Christoph, my guess is that he used a Gibson SG or a Les Paul for that solo. Amp setup could be a deluxe reverb, tweed deluxe or ampeg, even a smaller combo. Combined with a Dallas rangemaster treble booster you get that iconic harmonically rich sound. Note though that many great Stones' sounds are also with a hint of speaker drive and overloading preamp in the recording console and tape recording rig. However with any proper tube amp you can approach the sound by having it dialed in on the edge of breakup and use a pedal or a clean boost to push it over the cliff while slightly cleaning up the low end, leaving a better pronounced mid-range. The trick to a great dynamic lead sound is actually easy, but It's going to be loud, even with a small amp. That's why those many classic great sounds are sought after. They are not 'made' by a pedal in front of the only, but the whole playing and recording chain working together, operating at a sweet spot.

Ciao Riccardo! Thanks for asking! I must be honest, I don't know. I'm rethinking what content to make as a recording and teaching guitarist. I love to do tutorials but the KZbin copyright policy is and has turned quite harsh. I could make this kind of content to gain subscribers but eventually there's no revenue going to be made and if it only goes to YT and the big record companies. I don't mind the stones making a huge revenue and I'm not in this for revenue purposes but yt creators should be able to earn from 'fair use' and 'educational' content. Sadly that looks to be impossible since a short while and the changes in policy. Regards!

Just a warning about the risk of copyright content notice being issued against this video. I did a video demonstrating this Mick Taylor solo on the pedal steel in December 2015, just me playing the solo note for note, no backing track, no sampling of the actual released Stones track. At the time of upload, there were no problems probably because it got past the YT's automatic copyright content detection mechanism. But today as I did a routine check of my videos, I found a copyright content notice issued against it. Apparently my video got flagged because the detection was done manually, yes, manually, some guy from the record company or publishing company, or their legal representatives, going through all YT videos manually to search for material related to the Stones. A few of my other Stones related videos also got hit by the notice, again detected manually. I don't know if your video has got hit by a copyright content notice but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. Good video by the way.

Ciao Danny, thanks for the message. As a matter of fact it did! I got a notice but according to YT, this video is allowed by the claimer. So it could still be monetized with a lot of hassle to prove you are the one playing a 3rd party's track. If my account would have that status, anyway. But IMHO it's a shame that all sorts of material for educational purposes get's flagged or demonetized. Recently I saw a channel 'Topthink' demonetized while that channel was about actually just simply helping people out, and all original content. The world upside down. Aldo, great lesson. When he goes to the G chord in the first time through the solo, what G shape is he seeing do you think? Or is he just thinking of the G major scale in that position?

You could say he thinks the lines in a D major pentatonic shape, but plays the chordal notes of the G chord.

@@blindponyband Ciao Kent, he does play the G note here and there, on the G chord, but doesn't support on it for too long as that would take the focus away from the key. That G is indeed the only note not in D maj pentatonic. It's a matter of staying true to the material that the pentatonic scale offers while playing the right chord-notes at the right time.
