Thanks so much for tackling this finally. This is one of my all time favorite albums; pretty much amazing from front to back. Each player is in top form on this. I think the addition of DH Peligro on drums (one of the godfather’s of hardcore drumming) really allowed for Klaus to showcase his abilities. To me, this is them in their prime. A truly focused and tight album. I hope we can see this as a full album review! Thanks again!!

A lot of punk bands either feigned musical incompetence or were genuinely novice musicians. This fitted with the punk ethos that "Anybody can do this" and was a rejection of the overblown pomp and flashy musical sophistication of Prog Rock. Dead Kennedys, however, didn't hide their competence, preferring to use their musicianship to create specific atmospheres (albeit within the punk genre). Klaus was far more than just a steady/pocket bassist.

The musicians in the band weren't kids who picked up their instruments to start DK, they were accomplished musicians before punk was a thing, that's why they stood out. Klaus is 75 years old!

Omg. One of my favorite albums. This song was okay bass wise. I don’t really have money to spend on anything extra right now, but I’d join Patreon for this album alone. 😂 Dead serious. The reason it’s so upbeat is the feel of the “it’s Halloween, it’s time for fun…” but then it gets kind of dark at the end. Their songs are amazing because of stuff like this. Hey, it’s Halloween… it’s fun, hey it’s this blues progression… we know what’s going on here, we are familiar with this…. Nope! It’s a different take from DK. I immediately heard the bass on the next song “Winnebago Warrior” in my head. That’s one of my favorites. So good. Thank you for this. Thank you for checking out the lyrics, too. His lyrics changed my life, and changed the way I look at the world.

I'm a drummer, not from a punk background and kind of never thought it was complicated music. Until I joined a punk band and started learning covers of classic punk songs and they are so deceptively complicated. It was really cool seeing you break this song down from the bass perspective. Never going to listen to it the same again. This is my favorite DK album for sure.

So stoked on this review. I remember first buying the Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables album back in like ‘96 from Tower Records with my allowance money, all because one of the guys in Unwritten Law was wearing a Dead Kennedy’s shirt on the back of their cd. I distinctly remember upon first listen, not really getting it at first and thinking that the music sounded like eerie or evil surf rock. Perfect description for Dead Kennedys. Didn’t take long before they became one of my favorite bands. Definitely an acquired taste that I did not get at first. I now realize the pure genius that is The Dead Kennedys. Jello Biafra with his Tiny Tim style vocals and East Bay Ray with his evil surf rock guitar style. Nobody sounded like them before they came along and no one has been able to even come close to their sound since.

Your comments about the surf sound are spot on. That's a big component of their guitar tone. Same w/ the thing you said about the guitar feeling a touch "off" or out of tune, it's by design. A defining aspect of their history is disruption: lyrically, musically, socially...

I feel like the dk were the spiritual successor to the Sex Pistols and the clash to a lesser extent. You should do anarchy in the uk it’s got a great bass line finger picking done by Glenn Matlock. It’s the only song on never mind the bollocks that Glenn happens to be on. The rest is the guitar player playing. The pistols have some fun bass lines you have to listen to demos and early recordings to hear them though. Don’t listen to anyone who says Glenn isn’t on the album or Sid was their bass player. Glenn matlock is a fine bass player who wrote some of the greatest punk rock songs ever .

Jello has also called Frankenchrist his favorite DK album. One thing is for certain, Klaus, Ray, and Peligro played their asses off on Plastic Surgery Disasters. Despite the topics, DK was the epitome of irreverent. As often silly as serious, even mixing the two. Do yourself a favor and learn the lore of their song Pull My Strings. Fun fact: Despite most of the bands catalog being written solely by Jello Biafra he never learned to play an instrument.

In 2003 I jammed this full blast hung over awaking up my at the time/soon to be future girlfriend. I had to be in court at 9 and it was 8:40. I spiked my blue hair and took a shot of vodka to bite the dog back- and went before the judge with a dark circles and a grin. She didn't know I had court and got dragged along. He threw my case out- no jail and we went out for breakfast. She said that was was the day she fell in love with both me and real punk. She had never met someone who gave less of a crap about anything in her life and she loved it. We burned it at both ends and I'm a different person now.....sober and happy. When you hear about "real punks" and nihilism and all that- make no mistake those people exist. I was young and dumb BUT I have no regrets. Great song- great album bro.
