My main problem with Pet Semetary is it missing out the Wendigo stuff which is such an important and interesting part of the novel. Also it very much feels like a TV Movie, not just because of the actors (particularly the lead) but also the general look and pacing. That said, they did a great job of the effects, and Fred Gwynne is iconic in it. Reading the book over the Summer, it amazed me that the famous line of "Sometimes, dead is bettuh" is like only mention once in passing, yet it's the main quote anyone has from the film.

This is one that would have probably of been hard for me to rank so instead of trying I'll just make a few comments here and there. Haha. Thinner. I have seen this movie and I always remember the cover but during you showing clips from it I didn't even recognize pretty much all of it. I guess it just leave that much of an impression with me. Needful Things: It probably wasn't that great of a movie. However. I do love Max Von Sydow though he didn't pull me much into the movie. What I do get behind the movie in is Ed Harris and J.T. Walsh. I can always seem to emotionally connect with Ed Harris and J.T. Walsh I feel pity for him and love his Insanity. The Dark Half: Meh. Don't really have a comment on this one. Haha. Firestarter: The connection between father and daughter was great. The middle did drag. The ending was great and except I just didn't like the look and feel of the fireballs themselves. Cujo: Movie is fine. Really good acting. Just a movie I don't ever want to watch again. Silver Bullet: I love the movie. I really do. The look of the werewolf might be the only thing I dislike about the movie, everything else is really fun and entertaining. I do agree about the dream sequence. Though I don't want it to be gone from the movie. Just where to point it in the film I'm lost at. It needs to be after the reveal, but from the reveal onwards he is pretty much gone to the dark side and no longer having an inner conflict. So I'll just admit how to make it work I'm lost at. Pet Semetary: Fred Gwynne. I love the actor. It is probably the first movie I think of when I think of a Stephan King adaptation. Probably the main character is the weakest link. Don't hate him or anything but just don't real the entire weight of emotion. However I don't hate the actor in it. He just does okay. Dead Zone: I actually need to re-watch it. I can remember many of the scenes of the movie but it is weird in I can't just remember what they made me feel. Misery: Kind of the same deal as Cujo. Except maybe even better acting. Yet. I just don't ever want to watch the movie again, However I think it is a lot more entertaining than Cujo. I could actually see me at one point feeling like watching it again and be fine with it. Christine: Haha. Like my brother I do have a love for classic cars and apparently Stephen King does too. The movie pulls me in, the effects are great, the directing is great, and the acting is fine. I just think Arnie's change isn't as subtle as thought. I mean the directing of the subtlety is great but the actor still always makes me feel too much of his douche qualities since almost the beginning. Carrie: This is a weird one for me. My feelings for everything is a love/hate relationship. Who knows how long I could spent trying to explain how I love and hate each thing of the movie. The Shining: Well it is The Shining. It is sad that King didn't like it that much but understandable. We just need more Jack's face on tornados. My apologies for who ever takes the time to read all of these long comments I leave on these Dead Last videos.

Love these Dead Last videos. Sorry for the late comment, and I'm repeating what others say, but the different perspectives are great! Mikey on special effects, all day. Derek will think about music a lot like Tangerine Dream 👍 in Firestarter and the Ramones in Pet Sematary. Matt brings in great Stephen King insight, like the bold opinion about staying true to the Cujo book ending and the comment about King's own wife hating the story of Pet Sematary. Josh often focuses on story and editing with well-grounded observations. And Christy has a lot of insight that I enjoy... Not everyone is a horror fan, but neither is my wife, and it helps to understand it from the viewpoint of someone who didn't grow up with horror as many Movie Timelines fans did. I could watch these Dead Lasts all day. And some days, I do!

Novels? Cycle of the Werewolf was a CALENDAR, Josh! :P For the most part these movies are all fine and I don't have a ton of thoughts about them. My dead last is the only one I really wouldn't want to rewatch. My rankings in parentheses: Thinner (11): Meh. It has some good parts but most films on the list are better. Needful Things (10): It was ok. Kinda fell apart in the back half. The Dark Half (7): Pretty decent. Firestarter (8): It's Fine. Cujo (4): Like Josh, I remember really not liking Cujo but I was really into it this time. Dee Wallace is amazing. Silver Bullet (9): Pretty good. Everett McGill is actually creepy in it. Pet Sematary (3): A mix of highs and lows but the highs for me redeem it. The Dead Zone (1): Such a great film. Good distillation of what is a hard novel to adapt. Misery (5): I read the novel and watched the movie for the first time last year and I was honestly disappointed in this movie. The novel was so good and it was hard for me to emotionally separate from the changes made to Annie and the loss of most of my favorite scenes. It's a good movie though and Kathy Bates is incredible, despite the changes to Annie. Christine (Dead Last): I don't care about car stuff and I don't like the characters. A really miserable experience for me to watch. Feel the same about the novel. Carrie (2): Love this film. I can't think of a single aspect of it that I don't love. The Shining (6): The Shining is fine. Visually stunning but empty. The script I feel has issues from adaptational cuts. You could almost just cut the shining entirely from the film and it would barely matter. Oh, you say you need it because of Dick? Well, you can also cut Dick because his role in the film is superfluous and just taking up time that could be spent on character development. Also, why did they even include a version of Tony then cut the role Tony plays? It's just weird. But whatever. It's a beautiful film. I don't find it scary. It's a shame because the novel makes me cry and the movie makes me think "oh, that looks nice."

I think Carrie hits harder for girls who actually went through abuse from both authority figures and schoolmates. Even worse is when it's someone of the same gender who you would expect to be understanding.
@WilAdams2 жыл бұрын
Carrie is still the best adapted King novel. The writer took what could have been 'normal' and run of the mill teen drama with a 'supernatural' element and transformed it into a classic drilling down into peer pressure, and misunderstanding. None of the girls understood Carrie's homelife, Carrie's mom refused to understand the world outside her home beyond her beliefs. Director De Palma also should be commended because like the screenwriter, he understood Carrie and her situation. It should also be pointed out that whereas, Misery had the outstanding performance of Kathy Bates, Carrie has the outstanding (and Oscar nominated performances) of both Piper Laurie and Sissy Spacek. The fireworks between the pair are compelling and grip the viewer every second they share the screen. Meanwhile, the supporting cast--especially William Katt--elevate the scenes they share with Carrie. The one weakness was the mother of Sue Snell. Her part was a bit underwritten, but it was not helped by the actress's performance. Sorry, but the Shining is a good film, but it is NOT as good as either Carrie, Misery, or even the Dead Zone. The reason Firestarter failed was the script, sure, but the casting was wrong. George C. Scott should have played the Martin Sheen role. Martin Sheen should have played the father, and Heather O'Rorke should have played the Firestarter. I would even cast Ted Cassidy or Richard Kiel as Rainbird. Neither Drew nor David Keith should have been in this film.

As a teenager of the 70s, I was fortunate enough to read the books first before the movies came out on the big screen and Salem's Lot, The Stand, and the remake of The Shining on the small screen. I'm probably one of the very few people on earth who can't stand Kubrick's vision. Not because Stephen King hates it, but because it was so promising when it started out, then fell away from the book. Plus Kubrick was a real prick to certain cast members and I've never liked anything he did. Can you imagine calling the author at 3 a.m. Maine time asking for the author's point of view on a certain part, letting the author ramble on and on and then concluding it by saying "No, we're not going to do that. That's not how I see it." The only reason most people love it is Jack Nicholson's over-the-top portrayal of Jack Torrance, "here's Johnny" and going after his wife. Only the music was awesome and really captured the terror of being stuck in the Overlook with loony tunes alcoholic. What about "The Stand"?? The TV version (first one) was amazing. I can't believe it never even placed a spot on your list.

Would you include sequels (Return to Salem's Lot, Creepshow 2, etc) or no? In any case, looking forward to many more and very honored to be part of it as a patreon - keep up the amazing work man and thanks!

The TV cut of Needful Things is much better and got its first commercial release (and a remaster) earlier this year. Before that, it was only available as VCR-ripped bootlegs.

The Shining is an Overrated P.O.S. of a movie.... The story is about a good man's slow descent into madness... Nicholson (probably the most overrated actor of our lifetime) acts batshit crazy when he's driving up there. Because that's his whole career... He acts the same way in every movie he's in... Nuthin new here OR EVER with Nicholson..... You're supposed to think this movie is great because of critics and internet opinions...Gimme a break... The movie sucks start to finish
@rnw27393 жыл бұрын
100% agree mate. This film is good but no way the 'classic' it is hailed as. As for Nicholson, yes he is mad from the very start and his feeble jokes "Wendy, I'm home!" at a time we are supposed to be terrified of him, simply turn him fully into the cartoon character he is trying to be from the start. Those stupid grimaces into camera couldn't be any more forced and it is astonishing how anyone can find this in the least bit frightening.

This failed to actually list the best adaptation. This list isn't that it's a best movies list. I say this simply due to the shining not actually being a very good adaptation of the king story. It's a great movie lowsy adaptation.

Fun fact Alexandra Paul has an identical twin and in doing Christine they pranked John Carpenter on the set. Her twin actually acted in a scene and John couldn’t understand what was going on with her in that scene. I wished they had recorded that just so I could see the confusion in his face. In regards to number one The Shinning. It is a great film and it does deserve the spot. However, I can never again admire a man who berated and verbally abused his actress and actually encourage the other actors to do the same just to get an emotional pain for the scene. This obviously doesn’t fly today but also let’s admit the misogyny and abuse that Shelley Duvall went through as a female because Kubrick didn’t treat the other actors like shit to get a shot right. She is scarred for life and never got the fame she deserved because of this director. I’ll be respectful here and not call him something else. I can’t help to be relieved that this man is dead because I’m sure he has verbally abused plenty of other actors in his lifetime. I just think she paid a price too high just to please audiences. But that’s just my opinion.
@matthewmastrella66354 жыл бұрын
Yeah man, he really abused her no doubt about it. Hard to watch some scenes now knowing what happened
@jazcc4 жыл бұрын
Matthew Mastrella Yes exactly. I mean every time the scene with the bat comes up, I can’t help but imagine Kubrick yelling, Cut! Again. Over and over again.

Thinner wasn’t a great movie but it wasn’t as bad as you’re making it out to be. I considered Needful Things as one of the best King adaptations until I read the book. I still love the movie but nowhere near as much as I did. The Dark Half fell flat for me. It would be my dead last pick. In The Book Firestarter the kid is a sympathetic character. In the movie she’s a bratt who you can’t help but think she’s in more control then she wants you to think. I love Cujo. Dee Walice should have won an Oscar. Silver Bullet is the most underrated King movies of all time. Pet Sematary isn’t one of my favorite King movies but it’s 1000% better then the remake. The Dead Zone is Christopher Walken’s greatest role. It does feel like 3 different movies though. Misery is a great movie I just couldn’t get into. I have the same problem with the book. Christine was great but once again once you read the book you realize how bad the movie is. I read this book in a waiting room while my mom was getting cemo Sissy Spacic (sorry for the spelling) is the only good part of this movie but the changes of her character from the book makes it even worse. The Shining was a great movie but the worst Stephen King adaptation. Thankfully Doctor Sleep righted many of the wrongs.
@thegillmanedits4 жыл бұрын
The movie is horribly incompetent but the main character in Thinner is supposed to be a selfish and unlikable prick. Even as the sickness ravages him his repentance is not real but more based on regret. Anyway, the movie totally sucked balls and the actor was horrid at communicating the character motivations.

Cycle of the Werewolf is ok but Stand by me and Shawshank don't qualify? How about a non novel Steven King ranking?
@movietimelines4 жыл бұрын
i focused on horror entries only, although i imagine both shawshank and stand by me would be ranked pretty high. look for a non-novel ranking at some point in the future, so i can get some of the short story inspired flicks in there.

Only Pet Semetary, Stand by Me, and the Green mile are good. Maybe the old Stand TV show. Maybe the IT tv show. Those are super iffy. Most of his adaptations are garbage. Most of his novels are too. But some are priceless.
